Hi All,

I'm wondering here if you golfers are a serious tennis players too?

What index are you playing at?

Are you taking any lesson?

How often you guys play tennis in monthly basis?

What is your budget per year spending in tennis gear?

How old are you ?

What strokes are you working most to improve?

Any of you are using a training aid? what is that?

What would you like see out there to help you to improve on the training aid?

Who do you think is the biggest tennis coach in your era?

What brand racket are you playing with?

Are you belong to any club? private or public?

Do you watch tennis channel a lot?

Any of your family members play tennis too? who?

Do you guys like to browse on crowdfunding websites such as kickstarter or indiegogo?

Please add any comments if any! The more the merrier!

I really appreciate your time and effort to help me on this project!

sincerely,

Used to play a ton as a junior and started playing again in college.. I could get back into it, but I'd be so addicted to it, I'd probably stop golfing :)

I have played tennis since I was a kid until about 32 as my primary sport. Was probably a 5.0 rating. I learned a very different game in the 1960s and 70s than they play today. Lessons are important simply to learn the power game a bit better. I still play a very "old fashioned" game - longer strokes, lateral movement, turning the side to the ball. Working on shortening strokes and torquing the body. I learned the game without lessons as a child - and so my golf training has actually helped me relearn tennis faster. I'm early 50s. I play privately and we have both soft and hard courts that are also indoor and outdoor. I prefer the faster hard courts although as I get older I will most likely enjoy the slower game of clay.....but not yet! :) I play Head/Prince or Wilson racquets...usually 100 cm's or less...midsized, not oversized, nor over length. I hit a flat ball with medium spin, and a 1 handed backhand although I learned as a kid with a 2 handed...which in the old days was "odd". In my day the famous tv teacher was Vic Braden - who I thought was creepy...sorry if that offends anyone on GolfWRX. The way he said "backhaaaahnd" was creepy.

The big "gee whiz" today is tennis's version of "Trackman" - but for tennis. Racquet sensors that can track your strokes. As for training aids - at my age - I think I would be interested in something that helps me to hit a more powerful serve or ground strokes....it's the same fixation that golfers have with distance. And like golf - where the best thing for most folks to work on is short game - I think most tennis players would benefit best by learning about footwork.

I think at my age - my interest and age - I can make better progress with golf than tennis. Tennis always needs another player who can challenge you at a higher level (in order to improve)...whereas golf just needs you and the course. Hope this helps.

Played in Highschool, College and did the mini tours for a couple years then went cold turkey. Probably play once every 2-3 years now. Golf is my sport now though I'm with Pure. If I picked up tennis again and had people to play with I'd probably play more regularly.

How about if there is a device that has a injury prevention features build in?

Joe
Not for me. Tennis is like golf - it's a "life time sport" and it's fairly easy on the joints. It's one of those sports that if you suffer an injury - nobody but another tennis player will feel badly for you. :) The game I play today (probably 4.0 to 4.5) is not nearly as aggressive as Roger Federer. And it's slower version of singles, or if you want speed you play doubles....not a lot of injuries.

I played Jr USTA tournaments as a kid all through high school because we couldn't afford golf. Only played IM's in college and then blew out my rotator cuff my sophomore year after getting pretty involved in the gym. I'll be glad to answer your survey! Great survey, I'll have a lot to add once I can get the kids to sleep and get on my desktop.

On a side note I did just lock up a pair of Federer Jordan AJ3's so I can feed balls to my kids!

What index are you playing?
* Pre golfwrx probably around a 30 and then got hooked on golf about 5 years ago to a very serious degree. Met Dan Carraher (iteach) who teaches locally and after 2 years of lesssons dropped to about an 18 but within the last 6 months have seen the swing come full circle to posting 9's of 42,46, and 45 this month. 3 kids ages 5, 3, and 20 months don't leave much time so I only get a full round in 2-3 times a month.
Ohhh you mean tennis .... Right now probably a 4.0 having not touched a racket but you never forget.

Are you taking any lesson? The man, the myth, and the legend Dan Carraher has helped me more than any club, oem brand, or putter. At the beginning I was going once a month but now I am just playing as much as I can and will go see him every 3 months or so.

The only lessons that I'll get are probably mens clinics for a mens league. Repetition and practice.

How often you guys play tennis in monthly basis?
I played all through juniors and high school. We couldn't afford golf and I worked teach youth clinics and summer camps to pay for my own instruction and tournaments. Blew out my shoulder in college when I got serious in the gym and it dropped to just messing around 2-3 times a year prior but going to get involved again. It will probably be twice a week for clinics and 1 match with other clubs a week.

What is your budget per year spending in tennis gear?
It's peanuts compared to golf but also helps having a stringing machine (which might now be considered obsolete).

How old are you ?
33

What strokes are you working most to improve?
Going to get back into mens leagues now that my shoulder has heeled. Goal is to just get back into a fun league that might be a 4.0 and see what happens. Its ironic though because golf has given me such better balance and stability. I used to have a crazy western grip, wide open stance, and just go nuts. I'm a flatter, more stable and honestly I feel like I could have been a better player if I had stopped the wild insane style.

Any of you are using a training aid? what is that
Training aids are more for my shoulder but the theraband and tens shock therapy have made it possible to get back on the court. My wife and I started working out and slowly but surely its a work in progress. I found out my neighbor was a collegiate tennis player who hasn't played in 15 years and I recently found him his old prostaff 6.0 racket at a play it again so you could say he will be my hitting partner/ball machine for now.

What would you like see out there to help you to improve on the training aid?
Specifically for tennis a reliable ball machine with a battery pack with todays technology. Training aid to work with rubber band technology for service/overhead motions to strengthen "tennis muscles." I can't think of any that were excellent but we were poor so hula hoops and cones were it.

Who do you think is the biggest tennis coach in your era?
Not sure I understand the question but there were quite a few excellent tennis coaches in my area that since Jacksonville is in the ATP tours backyard.
I can give you some names if there is something specific you need.

What brand racket are you playing with?
Growing up: Wilson prostaff 6.1, Prince Michael Change 690 longbody, Head Radical Ti (hated it aesthetically but its all I could get at cost from my instructor)
Now I have a couple Babolat Pure Drives

Are you belong to any club? private or public?
Used to go to belong to a private club but the neighborhood has courts. The mens clinic is at a semi private club but people can pay daily.

Do you watch tennis channel a lot?
Never unless its Orange Bowl or Junior Grand Slam stuff. I could careless about the ATP tour after getting into golf. I do love the Majors and always will.

Any of your family members play tennis too? who?
My 2 daughters are getting into it. I won't let them do anymore than putt when it comes to golf. Dance, swim, soccer, everything until the figure out what they like. Tennis is the best of every world, hand eye, balance, stop and go, conditioning, etc etc etc

Bringing back memories man! I was a CTS Lightning 90, Pro Staff 6.1 and 6.0 (green/purple), and Yonex RD-7 guy. Yonex eventually gave us deals and free racquets. I played out of Jack Kramer Club as a Junior and then stopped to play baseball :)

Can't answer all of your questions because they don't really apply to me anymore. I played tournament tennis through college, and then put my racquet in the closet, and have only taken it out a couple of times in over twenty years. (I saved my favorite trusty old Max 200G - which will stay with me forever, even if I never play again.)

Golf is my sport now. I always loved golf as well, but tennis was cheaper. After school, high level tennis was not an option because I had a debilitating knee injury. You have to have great wheels- speed and footwork are the main ingredient in tennis... In golf, my club lets me drive a cart right up to my ball! No running necessary!

Thanks for your post....it meant a lot to me, even for a little survey!

I take it a lot them out there have more injury from tennis compare to golf?

I would definitely wanna see more answers from others.

Joey - you seem fixated on tennis injuries...so just google "most frequent tennis injury". But tennis for the recreational player (your best market) isn't an injury producing sport.

Tennis elbow is/was common - but it's not debilitating. That compression sleeve provides relief, as does ibuprofen. But most folks don't play like Nadal - they literally can't.

Best info - is probably from an orthopedist - sports doctor - and ask him what he sees and recommends.

Sure - in theory - if the demand is there for this type of gadget; and you can sell enough of them to make a profit - why not? Can it be competitive VS the price of the compression sleeve and 6 Advils? If it can't - it's another good idea for which there is a limited market demand.... There are lots of those types of things.

If it helps - impact position and arm swing are the relative "same" for golf and tennis - with slight variation - but if you know how to hit a forehand, your ability hit through a golf ball and compress it is easier....so training aids can be similar. For me the simple cue is "swing the L" for both tennis and golf. If you're pre-releasing or casting - you can still play the game - but your power is greatly diminished...for both.

I'm wondering here if you golfers are a serious tennis players too?

I play tennis in high school and college then went on to become a US PTR tennis pro. These days I don't teach anymore and I play with many of my friends who still do. When I become disenchanted with golf I usually go and enjoy the quick two hours the tennis can provide.

What index are you playing at?

I don't play competitive in anymore but I coach my friends that do. I teach here and there on the side when old clients reach out to me

Are you taking any lesson?

I give them, sometimes :-)

How often you guys play tennis in monthly basis?

With my shoulder and elbow are not flaring up I would play tennis twice a week same as golf.

What is your budget per year spending in tennis gear?
How old are you ?

I am a very old and weathered 33

What strokes are you working most to improve?

In my opinion most players struggled the most with the back hand And the serve.

Any of you are using a training aid? what is that?

I like where this is going. As a coach I had a few makeshift props that I would use but never to the level that we experience here in the golf world. I think there is definitely room for props the players can use on their own when they don't have a coach available.

What would you like see out there to help you to improve on the training aid?

As a coach teaching the server was my favorite. I think that it is the hardest for many low-level players to master. It is also what keeps them from competing against others after all you can't start a point without us a as a coach teaching the server was my favorite. I think that it is the hardest for many low-level players to master. It is also what keeps them from competing against others after all you can't start a point without a serve.

Who do you think is the biggest tennis coach in your era?

It is obviously me! All kidding aside celebrity coaches don't move the needle that much and tennis.

What brand racket are you playing with?

I have been on ad staff with Wilson since I was 20.

Are you belong to any club? private or public?

I do not belong to a club but prefer to teach at public facilities when I do.

Do you watch tennis channel a lot?

I do not. In my opinion they do a poor job compared to golf channel. Golf channel actually covers major events very well as compared to tennis Channel.

Any of your family members play tennis too? who?

I am a lone wolf.

Do you guys like to browse on crowdfunding websites such as kickstarter or

I do not.

Please add any comments if any! The more the merrier!

Great question to ask. I might even start my own subs for people who want to ask questions of a coach. I will be interested to see and read the comments that come up here. I am also very interested to see what you are up to Joe!

I played through high school, gave it up, picked it back up ten years later, played usta adult leagues for years, and have not played much at all over the last five years. I got tired of the sandbagging and gossip mill in the leagues. I was on a few state championship teams, but we never made it to nationals. I played as a 4.0 and was self taught until I finally figured out I was never going to hit a decent backhand without help. I finally found a pro who could teach me after many failed attempts. My racket of choice was/is the Wilson Six One 90 (not sure they sell them in that size any more).

Played tennis as my main sport through high school. Was varsity and was the top player for the last two years. This was in the seventies. Always thought it was my best sport because I only disappointed myself and not the team. Was I that good? Smaller school good but never spectacular. I loved to get to the net. My love of doubles was the desire to hit the ball as hard as I could at someone who challenged ownership of the net. Not the team aspect. Use to tee off my partners because of that. Never back off.

Back to the server on returns but nothing wrong with challenging the person at the net after that. They have the least time to react!
