I have to give a lot of credit to someone who stops an annoying golf demeanor after he's confronted. Most of the guys I golf with are way too old to change so if they don't have an easy going temperament, then they get booted to the curb for someone more pleasant.

If you're the type of person who is looking for something to complain about, you will find all you can ever want in golf. I play to enjoy myself.

One of the biggest misconceptions of most higher amatuer golfers is to think they deserve to drive the ball down the middle of the fairway, stick approach shots next to the pin, lag putt to within 1 foot, and to hole all 10 foot putts. These same golfers don't practice, don't take lessons, don't have good course management, but complain when the results aren't to their strict demands. Golf is a hard game, especially when you don't practice it, and to expect "scratch" results is really a foolish, arrogant demand. It's really getting old for my liking. I'm at an age where I enjoy golfing well, and enjoy a solid effort in the process, but also want to seek out enjoyment of the "experience". When I double bogie, which is usually a couple times a round, I look forward to the next hole to sort of redeem myself. If I don't, I simply move on to the next hole. Yes, golf can be discouraging, but even in those moments I can enjoy the ambience of the corse layout, the nice weather, and being with friends. To let anger and frustration dominate the day is complete foolishness.

I must be a joy to play with. Satisfied with the shot if I can find the ball, happy if it's playable, thrilled if it's anywhere near the intended location.

Although he has been a friend for the last few years, our friendship is being taxed. He offers some benefits to a friendship like, staying at his cottage for golf outings, sharing in driving to and from the course, etc, but his golf habits are hard to take. Golf friends are hard to find, so I am caught in the middle. Abby, what is your advice?

I would rather golf alone, and have a peaceful round, then have to deal with the likes of this so-called "friend:.

You may want to film his swing and show it to him. This is usually a shock for anyone.
Or
Play him for money. Every time he hits a bad shot and complains you should be getting ahead and winning some dough. You're condition his whining with something positive so you should eventually like hearing him be a lil bit$&.

Just start agreeing with him...all the time. "Yep...you must have hit that one fat." "You're right...that was pretty lousy." "I'm not sure I've ever seen someone that hooks it worse than you do."

Pretty soon, he'll stop complaining.
