Deep Faced 5 wood. 17-18*?

13 handicap here. My current setup is a 15* 3 wood, 17* hybrid, 20* hybrid, and 4-PW, 50*, 58*.

 

I've been struggling with the 3 wood and 17* hybrid off the deck and off the tee. When stuck well they have a tendency to hook. I'd like a club for what would be a 220-230 yard range. Wanted to see if anyone had similar issues and what clubs they found success with.

 

My driver flight is a high 250 yard carry draw. I've found myself laying up on par 5s a lot to avoid bringing the big hook into play. My preference would be a shaft length around 41-42 inches.

I have a G25 5 wood. Its face is plenty deep enough for me and performs great out of the fairway and rough. Its the oldest club in my bag if that means anything. Its my 220 to 230 club.

BTW your driver numbers are identical too mine and I also have the same issue of over hooking fairway woods and esp. hybrids.

I remember having a Cleveland mashie that was deep faced and long. Probably can be bought for dirt cheap now

The previous model Mizuno JPX EZ 5 wood has a nice deep face.

The original Ping Rapture woods are really deep.

Cleveland 588 has a deep face and it's easy to launch. Cut it down half an inch and you are ready to go. You can also find one on ebay for pennies.

The cally 5 deep was definitely what I was thinking of initially.

I've got the G25 3wood and hybrids. I love the 20* hybrid but just struggle to not hook the 17* and 3wood.

The JPX-EZ has a great look to it, but I've yet to bump into any mizuno woods in Houston.

I would have said X2 Hot 5 Deep until I hit the 816 5 wood. The 816's a beast!

The 913fd is 18 degrees and has been in my bag longer than any other club.

If you want to go full-tilt vintage + cheap + effective, go with any of Callaway's Steelhead models. The original, the Plus and the III all have nice deep faces that minimize the fear factor of popping it off the crown when the ball is sitting up in the rough.

I really dig my Bio Cell + 5/7 wood. Pretty deep face, easy to hit. You can adjust it from 16-19 degrees

You can't go wrong with the 5 Deep but i'd second the Titleist Fd series. I have a 913 model which is awesome. There can't be a better looking/feeling alternative.

After reading the "5 deep reloaded" thread, I bought one without every having hit it. I've had it for about about a month, and I think it's pretty amazing - easiest fairway off the deck I've ever hit. On well struck shots, it's about the same distance as my x hot pro 4 wood but I'm much more consistent with the 5 deep. I can even flight it lower to get some extra distance, if needed.

I love my 18° TEE CB4 5 wood. Decently long off the tee but I love the workability and higher ball flight. It's probably the easiest of all my sticks to hit. Definitely will stay in my bag for years.

What do you plan to get from the 5wood that you aren't getting from the hybrid?

Another vote for the Callaway 5Deep here. I've been bagging one all year as the next club behind my driver. The slightly taller club face is great for off the tee, but the loft makes it very easy to elevate off the deck as well. Basically it plays like a 3/4 wood. Fantastic club, and I think Callaway really missed an opportunity not pushing and expanding this line. A 4Deep could just be the perfect fairway wood.

My vote would be for the Callaway as well! Sounds like it would be a pretty good fit.

My other thought had been a 915Fd 5 wood which you can get from the Titleist through MOTO but then I thought they had flipped the head size this year so the 915Fd might still have a deeper face but in a smaller head so maybe a 913Fd would be worth a look?

Just would like a little improved forgiveness and minimize the left tendency a bit. I hit a controlled draw every club in the bag besides my 17* hybrid and 3 wood. These two clubs seem to like to hook hard off the tee.

I will usually hit the range hard and straighten them out for awhile, but after a couple rounds, the lefts start creeping back in. My thinking is that a more fade biased, longer shafted 5 wood would be a good way to possibly split the difference between these two problem clubs.
