Winter Tinker Projects

Recommended Posts

Well, I said I wouldn't buy any new clubs until I could afford to get fit and purchase the best gear for my game. But you know how it goes. Days get colder and shorter and you just end up buying things to pass the time.

I haven't purchased any new clubs, but I did cheat and I just purchased a Diamana S+ 92 for my hybrid. I've had trouble elevating it consistently over the past year, so I'm going to give it a shot vs my NV. I also have always enjoyed heavier shafts, and I like that this will bring the weight much closer to my irons.

My other bigger project for the winter is going to be finally sending off my putter to have some tungsten weights installed. I have tip weights/lead powder now, but I'm ready to move that for a better balance. I'll likely get some stamping and possibly upgrade the shaft in the process.

Let's hear what everyone is doing/considering! Pictures are always welcome of course.

I really want to change the shafts in my Wilson Staff Ci11s and learn how to "tinker" with my own clubs. I really want to take my Mp60s and black oxide them or custom paint fill them. I really want to take my Ci11s, Mp60s, and Mp67s and get them all custom fit so I can play out my own personal blades vs GI thread (haha). Money just needs to grow on trees....Sadly, I get married next year so funds are scare. EDIT: I am super pumped to get married...just not spending money on floral arrangements.

I've just picked up a Yes Forged putter that I'm going to tinker with. Paint fill, potentially a PX black shaft, I have a hybrid shaft here that is never going to get used again so will try it and see. I have a 10g tip weight which I might use in this as well. Just for fun! And to see what sort of feel I get from a graphite shaft in a putter!

Also toying with a new driver build!!!

Again mainly because its winter and I'm still two months away from playing golf again due to a recent operation to fuse bones in my right foot.

Well after this season (January 2015) I think I am completely done with golf clubs and any "tinkering", everything was custom fitted in January, from Driver to Putter to golf ball, had the best scoring year ever, handicap went from 6.9 in January to 3.3 as of last week, had many under par rounds and my worse round was 79, don't get me wrong I still go and window shop and demo different clubs, but nothing can give me the "wow" factor that would make me get something new, everything I have demoed is so close to my current numbers that it would be a waste of money...we can never say never, but for now I am completely satisfied with my equipment, for those that still searching, remember golf is a game and it should be treated as such, I have been through some tough times and golf has been therapy for me (blown up in Iraq), family is first always, but my suggestion is to get a proper fitting and find what works best for you then go out and shoot your best scores, good luck and God bless...

This is so true. I was hoping to do this for my 30th birthday, but the cash flow just wasn't there yet. Maybe in another year or two. Awesome success story though! And no one can ever say this enough, thank you for your service.

Well, why don't you try to get your current equipment properly fitted?, it will be cost effective and you will be used to the feel...just a thought...It has been my pleasure and honor to serve for 26 years, we all know why we do it, it is almost over for me though, I am set to retire December 2016 and my transition starts September 2016, so I am hoping to play a bit more during this period, my son is a Marine (2013) and I am very honored and proud of him as well...

Over the summer I bought a very nice condition set of Hogan Apex Plus heads (the first version, '99-'01) I'm toying with the idea of doing an MOI match with them as there are two different fitters in my general area that are recommended on the Wishon site.

However, every time I read a review of the new Titleist T-MB's my mind wanders (and my wallet cringes!)

I've got a Fujikura Rombax 8D07 HB shaft kicking around that I'm thinking about putting in a spare Titleist adapter to try in my 21* 915H. In that regard, anyone have any input as to how that shaft would compare to a Diamans S+ 90?

I've had most of it done piece by piece, but I've never done it from scratch with the full fitting carts with virtually unlimited head/shaft options, etc etc. With the exception of the putter which I had done at Club Champion. I'd really like to do a top to bottom fitting at Cool Clubs or something equivalent with outdoor/grass shots at some point. I've had my lies/lofts adjusted on irons and wedges, all my gaps fit nicely expect the current issue with the hybrid carry. Virtually none of my gear is off the rack. I think I could probably use the most benefit from the woods, but those are also always the highest dollar items. It all fits well, but none of it is fit like a custom tailored suit you could say. That's what I'm really waiting to save up for, and that goal has kept me from buying anything off the rack.

Refinishing putters, selling off many things, building some kind of rack/display for my putters to really class up the home decor, and I am kicking around idea of building a practice green in the garage (my wife is shaking head in disapproval as I type this, she so far is a pretty firm no on this)....

I have a very clean set of MP-14s to rebuild. I want to do these justice so I'm still in "thinking" mode. I probably won't pull the heads until March. I do have the grips for them. Lamkin crossline tour cord - those yellow ones. Best grips I've ever touched, can't wait. I bought 5 sets of em. :)

The fairway woods also need regripped, so i'm going to cut them down either 1/4" or 1/2" and lead tape them up a good bit. No changes to driver.

And this 6.5 8 iron shaft in the sand wedge I think was a failed experiment. I had better results with the S200 though I like the heavy-ness of this one. I'm not sure what it is, sometimes I get these "nose dive" balls with it. I can't tell if it's way too much spin or no spin. The ball will go up and zoom down before it would normally apex. It's not wounded duck or knuckle balls, it's like a premature nose dive still accelerating on the way down. It's a weird flight I've never seen before. I will probably try the PX 5.5 straight in, S400, and X100 in there to see.

Instead of golf I've been at the PT just about every day. We finally got the left side of my pelvis to stay in place. I am feeling so much better. I have a long way to go still, but I should be 100% healthy for once.

I have an SC TeI3 in nice shape. I'm thinking of murdering it out. Black shaft, black paint, black elastomer. I also have access to a Bridgeport so I'm thinking of adding a sightline on the top.

Also considering reshafting my irons with the new DG AMTs. I'll throw in some ProSofts while they're in pieces.

I had this affliction of flight for a while during my first 4 years of golf.
A rally accomplished amateur teacher called it a "popcorn fade".
It really is an angle of strike on the ball that does this.
I ended up moving the ball forward in my stance - think big toe - to eliminate this.
