How does the adapter on an adjustable head effect the CG

Look at a conventional (bonded) clubhead. The adaptor is really a removable hosel if you want to look at it that way.

Adapter is counted as part of the head weight. Bonded hosels with no adapter are comparable in weight to the newer heads with the adapter included.

Yes, they are counted as part of the head weight for the purpose of determining how firm or soft the shaft will play relative to a 'standad' weight head.

However, the specific impact on the C.G. is negligible when compared to a bonded head - moves it probably a max of 2-3 mm. And that's even assuming the designers could not compensate for that shift some other way - which they probably could to some extent.

Awesome thanks guys.....always wondered that..I would have buddies telling me they would look for heads that are lightest weight to compensate for the adapter. But it never made sense to me since its not part of the hitting or impact surface area. Only just the attachment, so never knew what role it would play on a head. For instance, how is a 195gr non-adjustable head differ from a 195gr adjustable head? know the thickness for sure but wouldnt it be the same as far as feel goes? And would head thickness but that much different if they are weighing the same?

5 grams won't affect the head any which way other than maybe swingweight. Sounds like you and/or your friends are getting wrapped around the axle and focusing on things that don't matter.

Doesn't that apply to the majority of members here? :beruo:

Some of the newer "low CG heads" were notoriously heavier than previous designs. It was highlighted a bit more when the SLDR heads come out, as they were pretty high for stock weights and people were ending up with very heavy SW numbers when using aftermarket shafts which brought them into a bit of a spotlight. This might be what your friends were kind of referring to. It's not really an all-around issue, there were just a few select models out there that became heavier than what was considered the norm. There were plenty of heads in years past that did not weight any more in total weight than their predecessors did. Even after that, many of those weight issues have been addressed and are not as big of a concern as they once were.

I'm fairly certain the CG can be placed anywhere whether it is adjustable or bonded. The difference is that more weight can be distributed in the head with a bonded hosel. More weight distributed means higher MOI, generally.

Until a manufacturer claims that their adjustable hosel is as light as bonded, I will assume it is heavier. I find it hard to believe any of the larger diameter, double ring adjustability systems is lighter than bonded.

Everything is a trade off at this point.

Yet you answered the question of how it could be in your first paragraph. In the bonded driver, the designer has more discretionary weight they can distribute over the rest of the head. It's only if they choose not to use that weight would the bonded driver come out lighter. That also doesn't mean that there is zero discretionary weight available in an adjustable head.

As an example, my adjustable r9 Supertri comes out right at 200 gm with the adapter and the adjustable weights. But even it has 20 gm of movable weights so easily could have been lighter if the designer had made a different choice. e.g. 10-1-1 instead of 16-1-1 would have given a 194 gm head (including adapter). If the same head had been designed w/o the adjustable weights it could have been an adjustable head that was around 185 gm or less (again, including the adapter) if the designers choose not to redistribute that weight elsewhere in the head..

As you said, it's simply a trade off depending on what the designer wants to accomplish. It's only really the case that If they wanted to design the lightest possible head, that a bonded head might come out a bit lighter - and that's not really a primary goal of the designers for adult clubs since it could adversely effect the performance of the shaft, the head, and of the individual with a ridiculously low SW.
