Fortworth/Dallas in September

Hi,

 

Just booked our flights to Fortworth/Dallas from Scotland for our next US golfing vacation so looking for recommedation on courses. Planning to stay downtown Fortworth but happy to drive a reasonable distance (up to 2 hours) for some great golf.

Remember that September is still summer in the Metroplex. No need for cool weather gear, and rain will probably be a thunderstorm, so no need for rain gear. Think shorts and short sleeves. If you want an inexpensive day trip, drive over to Glen Rose and play Squaw Valley. 36 good holes and not expensive at all.

Squaw Valley is a nice get away to a more rural area. Must play DFW courses:

My absolute two favorite public courses (both close to downtown FW) are Texas Star and Sky Creek. Texas Star is amazing. Sky Creek is great course in a neighborhood. It will be hot and prepare yourself for city traffic.

Have to throw my .02 in here. I second Texas Star as a great round. Another municipal course that I loved is Iron Horse. They had a ridiculous deal where you get 18 with a cart and a dozen pro-v1's for $50. I also like Fossil Creek. And if you can find a deal, Cowboys would be a great round. But not worth it at full price, IMO

Since you're from Scotland, this might be a bad idea but I'd be interesting to see your take. One of my favorite courses is The Tribute. I love the track, the staff, and the clubhouse. However, all 18 holes
mimic the best 18 holes of link courses in Europe. Just a thought.

I second Tangle Ridge and Tour 18. Go to avidgolfer.com and look at their ranking of the best public courses in DFW for some more ideas.

Just over a week to go and started to book the courses, can't wait.

 

Booked Texas Star for our first day and then Squawk (Apache Link) for the second.

 

Now looking for 3rd course and seen a deal on Golfnow for Iron Horse and Fossil Creek, what one would you recommend ?

 

Planning to then play the Tribute and then Cowboy (if we can get a good rate).

I liked Fossil Creek and it was in good shape in June.

I am a huge fan of Tierra Verde. It's in south Arlington. Not far. Conditions are top notch, comparable to Texas Star and Cowboys (aka impeccable). To touch on some of the other suggestions: Tribute's green conditions were disappointing in a tournament I played a couple weeks ago there, FYI, not sure if it is due to the heat or what. The conditions on that track, specifically the greens, used to be significantly better. Tour 18 conditions are average to below average IMO. Pass. Coyote's conditions are fine but I hate the layout, it's a bit goofy. I am not the only one but YMMV. Sky Creek Ranch and the Indian Creek Creeks course are two similar feeling courses, both good conditions, nice greens, variable layout, both solid.

I would really push you to put Tierra on the list, scrap Tribute if you have to make room. My .02. Have a great time, there's tons of great golf here in DFW! The weather shouldn't be too hot (by Texas standards... muahaha)

Thanks again for all your advise, we had a great trip to Fort Worth/Dallas. We finished the trip off with a round at Old American, I loved the course. DFW is a fantastic location for a golfing trip and we will come back some day.

 

We now planning our next year golfing vacation to US, any sugguests would be welcome.

 

We been on a number of trips since 2000, including Daytona, Mytrle beach, Houston/San Antonio, Vegas (couple of times), Scottsdale, Palm Springs and DFW on this trips. So we are thinking about Nashville, Austin or Hilton Head, any thoughts ?

If you did Austin, I would include San Antonio if you are going to stay more than 2 days. My vote would be Hilton Head though but that's biased because I've already played Austin and San Antonio enough.

Parts of Austin are pretty neat, funky and entertaining. A lot of Austin is endless suburbs with never ending road construction that leaves you with the feeling that you can't get there from here. Even in September, it can be brutally hot and humid. I am a native Texan, and I dread Austin. Living in the Panhandle, for a completely different golf experience, It would be Hilton Head.
