Help with decision of Iron Set?

CBECH22

Recommended Posts

So my Christmas bonus check is coming in tomorrow and I was thinking of spending it on some irons. As you can see in my sig i currently play Square Two's... Not very common and I am just trying to upgrade.

Irons that have caught my eye are the Wilson FG Tour M3 and the Nike VR Pro Combo irons.

I really like the look of the matte black finish in the Wilson, and I already have the M3 3 wood and 21* degree hybrid, so the Wilsons would go great in my bag. The only thing I am worried about is the off set in the Wilson's. The current irons i play do not have much off set that I have noticed, but they also dont go any higher than a 5 iron.

I never knew about offset in irons until i came to this site and also when took my brothers titleist 2 iron to use as a driving iron. Looking down at an offset irons feels very awkward to me. I guess what i was wondering is will this offset in the Wilsons affect my game enough that i should not get them and go with the Pro Combos?

VR Pro Combo's are a fantastic iron set. I would get them without second guessing. I played them for 4 seasons.

I think the best bet is to try them, even into a simulator, see if you can hit them toward your target. I would also recommned hitting a few chip shots with different irons as well.

The only thing is that I don't have access to demoing clubs. I would love to, but it isn't possible for me. Thanks though!

Did they hold up nicely?

One thing that's saved me some cash is buying a demo iron off ebay and putting in the bag for awhile. You can find a single demo club for pretty cheap, then hit it and resell it after you don't like it or get the whole set if you do.

That being said, the Pro models of the Callaway line (xhot, x2hot, xr pro) are hard to beat for the price and have little offset. If you want forged, the Apex line is nice but more pricy. Good luck in your search.

They held up very nicely, it's a solid forging. Just like a Titleist CB would be. Ages just fine.

That's what I am looking for, something that will last. Thank you!

The Wilson M3's are great looking clubs (my opinion). The offset is minimal and won't be a problem in terms of playability. The black finish will wear off but that's sort of the beauty of the clubs if you embrace the concept of patina adding character. The Nike's will hold up better in terms of maintaining their original appearance. They are excellent clubs that will serve you will. Cleveland also has a few older sets that are similar and can be found for dirt cheap these days.

One detail to pay attention to when club shopping is the shaft weight. Those Nike's (and the Cleveland's I mentioned) use Dynamic Gold shafts which are heavy. The M3's use DG XP shafts which are lighter and a little softer feeling. Shaft weight is more important than shaft flex and trajectory so do some demo's and decide for yourself what weight fits best with your tempo and feel.

Looking at you WITB, you seem to like the M3 line to an extent. I can only expand on the M3's. I play them and am ecstatic with the results. Granted, I am a little biased being a staff member, but they are the best irons I have ever played. I didn't like the lighter shaft they came with so I upgraded to the KBS Tour S shafts that weigh in at about 125g I believe. When testing the clubs, the heavier shaft gave me a better feel and felt more consistent than the lighter shafts. Most of Wilson's irons do have a no upcharge on most custom shaft options so I would suggest trying out different shaft combinations with these clubs. The M3's do have a great topline with a more compact looking head. It's also a plus that they are more of a players club with forgiveness when you need it. Now, with that being said, they will hurt you if you're not a consistent ball striker, but with conssistency there is no match. With that being said, if you like the feel of a forged player's club but would prefer more forgiveness I would have to suggest giving the new F5 irons a try. They have the look of the M3 with a slightly bigger footprint, but they have the forgiveness of the D200 irons. It is also a plus that they are forged.

I do really like the M3 line a got a great deal on my wood and hybrid for $35. I wanted to get the Wilson M3's because i love the look of them iwth the black finish and with my OCD kicking in it would help even out my back with nike and wilson. So thats why I really want these, just worried about the off set and lighter shaft in them since I would be buying them from ebay or on the BST and wont really have the money to change shafts.

Judging by your handicap I would assume you hit stiff shafts? I'll send you a PM.
