Has anyone played it. Is it worth the drive from hobby airport ? For 3 days of golf in the spring of next year would stay at the resort thanks

Why fly into Hobby? Austin, San Antonio, or El Paso are much closer.

The flight may be cheaper but it's 18-20 hours r/t in a car from Houston. El Paso may be $200 more expensive but half the drive time.

That being said, there are at least 25 public courses in Texas I can think of (and would rather play) that are a shorter drive than Lajitas...and that would include 0 courses in the Houston area as I've barely played any golf down there.

You may see Lajitas propped up in course rankings lists but that is mostly because they spend a lot of money flying local and national golf course reviewers out there on private charters out of Dallas (and probably elsewhere) to sing their praises. It's a fun course and made for a decent guys trip a few years ago but I'm not in any hurry to return.

The fare is a good deal...but the $150-200 in gas + rental car + your time makes that a bad decision IMO. Factor in that there's better golf available with a much shorter transit time, and I would suggest you look elsewhere for the golf.

I'm not saying there is some truth to the overrated part, however I really doubt you can name 25 better public courses in texas, especially if you skip over the houston area

I have played a lot of golf around the State. Black Jacks' is right up there in my top 5. Not only will it test your skills, the setting is spectacular.

 

When driving in, be aware that morning fog happens, and that large deer as well as exotic animals may be out there and they will really mess up the front of the car.

 

Another plus is that you don't have to deal with the drivers in D/FW or Austin or Houston!

I played blackjack a few months ago. There were a few holes where the fairways were beat up and were marked as ground under repair but other than that I really enjoyed the course. Some amazing views and where else can you hit a ball into Mexico?

7 buddies and I are doing this in April. We are flying there from Love Field. Any advice on the golf, what to eat and what to do when not playing golf?

 

Will we be walking, having caddies or likely using carts?

Only course I'm aware of there is blackjack. As far as eating and what to do when not playing, there's not a whole lot. I had heard how remote the big bend area is, but until you're there you can't even imagine it. I'd suggest the starlight theater in the terlingua ghost town for dinner. Also stop by la kiva for a drink and a bite.

 

My wife and I spent a day in the big bend park hiking and also did an atv tour one day.

I hear good things about this place and seriously considering a trip there from Oregon.

El Paso looks cheaper fdom PDX and is the closest it seems? Looks like the resort is about the only lodging and nothing else to do but golf and check out the park?

Only lodging options i know of are the resort or to grab something off vrbo.
