Steel Shaft softer than DG R300

I'm going to do a little tinkering this winter and I currently have DG R300 shafts in my Titleist 695's. I'm going to play them this year at a 1/2" shorter which is a correct length for me. Between the fact of getting older and having tennis elbow I was wondering a what would be a good steel shaft that would play softer than the DG's ? Thanks for any insight.

Any regular flex lightweight Nippon 950, 1050, etc. gonna play much softer

Since weight could be an issue with your elbow and age [I'm 70], you might consider the Xp95 in regular

DG run 120+ grams. If you're going to shorten your irons, then put in a 95-110 gram shaft, it's going to be hard to get your irons back to a reasonable sw. Look for a similar weight shaft with a different flex profile.

I would soft step a DG Reg a couple of times (i.e. 3i into 5 iron) and then add some tip weight to get the sw back up (if you cut 1/2" off). That should give you a softer feel and not lose too much in shaft feel and performance. This could also be a cheaper route as you would only need to buy 2 or 3 shafts to do this.

As others have asked what about weight, is DG R300 feeling too heavy? If so by how much?

The dg's feel kind of heavy now but it's hard to tell because whoever but these shafts in went a 1/2" longer than standard. I think I might soft step some Nippons. Since they are blades it would be easy to swing weight them with some tape if needed

Lots of lighter, [i]'softer'[/i] steel shaft options available but please don't take a random shot in the dark on something. Take the time to at least drop in to a big box store and try a few before you spend any cash. I know I over recommend the Mizuno shaft optimiser but it is easy to find and gives a good base assessment of the type of shaft that may suit your swing, it would be worth your while to find a store and try it, but don't take the recommendations without confirming their performance, while a good tool it doesn't get it right all the time.

I just had a set of xp95 r300s tested by my club fitter and they tested out at the low end of regular flex. Maybe worth a look. You could also soft step the DG r300s...

I had the NS Pro 950 in some irons 4 years ago, being 100kg, i was over powering the shafts
and hooking them left...something to consider.
Now have Ping CS Lite in stiff, these are 104 to 109 grams in weight.
Definitely happy with these, over a year with this combo.

Nippon 750 R flex seemed softer than any other R flex in steels that I have tried before.

I'm 63, don't think I'm going to over power anything.

Possibly some of the Dynalite xp offerings would suit you. They are lighter and launch higher if that is what you are looking for.

If you really want to get relief from the tennis elbow, you really should take some time to figure out what exactly about the current set might be aggravating it. It is possible that the flex might be contributing and softer might help but it's actually much more likely to be either the heavy weight of the DG's or even the shock of impact from using steel shafts in general.

The first thing you should do is to see if lighter weight shafts might be a bitter fit and help out with the elbow. For most people, it's much more important to get the right fit for shaft weight than it is for flex. If the elbow issues still persist with the lighter weights then it's likely you'll want to go to graphite. The various shock absorbing inserts may help a little bit short term and are very inexpensive to try out but not nearly as effective in the long run.

I think you'd like Project-x PXi in a 5.0 flex.
