Ping Anser Milled Putter

Hey Gang,

I was considering buying a Ping Anser milled putter. I see they originally sold for $300 but you can find them brand new on ebay for $150. Seems like a decent putter.

The biggest question I have is do you think the milled putter is better than the new ping TR grooves that ping is creating. Should I go milled with Ping or should I consider the groove technology that ping has.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Depends on what type of feel you prefer.

The TR lines have a softer sound and feel while the Anser milled will have a crisp feel.

IMO you sacrifice feel and feedback with the TR line in exchange for what the technology is supposed to do.

To add to the options Redwood anser is another nice milled option that will have a little lighter head.

I'm a huge fan of the Anser Milled line of putters. I bought a #6 and a #1 this year and for $150 they are a steal. Overall quality is easily on par with other premium milled putters and the feel is outstanding. They are a lot better than decent that's for sure.

The Anser Milled was their first foray into the TR groove technology. While the faces aren't milled nearly as deep as the TR grooves they are definitely there and every Anser Milled I've ever putted with puts a really nice roll on the ball. Distance control with the Anser Milled are excellent.

For $150 you will not find a better putter IMO.

I would go with Anser Milled. I have a Anser 5 milled that I send to Ping to do a floating face and I love it.

Two completely different feels, and is all about what you prefer. The TR grooves take so much feel away that it was hard for me to tell where I was hitting it on the face of the putter. I think the TR grooves work as advertised, but I prefer more feedback the Milled line provides. I've owned the Redwood, Karsten TR and Milled within the last year. The Milled is in the bag. They now come with a generic black headcover, not the white magnetic closure ones they originally came with.

The PVD finish on the Karsten TR line is fragile. Within a few months I was seeing finish wear on the bumpers from taking the headcover on and off. I wasn't too keen on the white TR grooves, so I removed the paint and thought it looked alot better; almost a throwback to the old BeCu's. The Redwoods are nice, and you can score a good deal on the Putter Lab demos on ebay right now, but IMO, they were more harsh than the Milled line.

So, I guess in conclussion, the toughest decision for me wasn't which line to go with, but what Anser number to buy. I opted for the 0, hoping to recreate some magic like my old sound slot MgBr Anser from 20 years ago. But I'm seriously thinking about trying a different number to compare.

I paid the full boat for my anser milled, 3 years ago. Love it and not looking at changing any time soon.

I've had Scotty's and prefer the look and feel of the anser milled... I have the one with a sound slot and its a perfect putter, since you're asking.

I bought a new Anser 4 milled a couple of months ago. Sorry I waited so long. Great feel and weight. Not looking at changing anytime soon. Good luck, hope you find exactly what you want.

ANOTHER QUICK QUESTION....I understand that you can buy different numbers such as 1,2,3,4,5,6 and that depends on your putting stroke such as slight arc etc....

The question I have is some of the Milled putters online dont have a number....they are just blank.....Is that just the standard version that would fit most players. I typically use a slight arc ping putter which would be the milled #2 or #3. But I saw quite a few that dont have a number. Can somebody explain what this is. Is it just standard?

The ones without a number are the Anser 0. They have the sound slot and don't have the sight line. It's a slight arc model just like the 1, 2, and 3. That's the one I have. Love the sound it makes, but I'm not as keen on the thicker topline. To me, the putter didn't look right without a sightline, So I created one with a 1/16" wide strip of electrical tape along the flange.

Can anyone compare the sound of the Anser 0 to the other models without the sound slot? I'm thinging about getting an Anser 2 and having a custom sound slot added to recreate the same sound and feel.
