what is a "FGI Custom Grind"?

I feel like I should know this but I just don't. I understand the custom grind part, but what kind of wedge is FGI?

I guess the question is what is a FGI wedge?

Sorry, I fixed it. They are FGO (For Golfers Only) custom grind wedges by Don Wood. Don was the lead wedge guy for Cleveland back in the 90's, and he opened up his own shop in Temecula back in 2003(?). I've had these since 2004 or so.

I am acquainted with Don Wood. Last I heard he left the area. Is he back?

No, Don has been gone for quite some time. I just have never replaced the wedges he made for me because I like them so much.

What do you think would happen? Would the scratch player stand a chance? What if it's the scratch player's home course and Mickelson has played it only one time previously?

Does the scratch player have any hope? If not, how many shots a side should he get from Mickelson to make it fair?

Let's say the course is rated 76 from the tees Phil is playing and 72 from the tees the scratch player is playing.

Have at it!!

(cool)

Depends what Phil shows up. Masters Phil or The Frys.com Open Phil

This wouldn't even be close. The 700 yards would be negated after 10 holes and Phils short game would take care of the rest.

I watched Phil round my home course last year and have been off scratch twice. Phil knocked it on the green from further back than I've seen anyone hit it on the longest par 5.

I believe on any given day, a scratch player, even 1-2 on a fast running home course like that one, could beat a "+" player, especially if strokes are involved. Golfers at that level might swing as much as 10 strokes in either direction.

PS: I read your 18 hole coverage. No doubt it was memorable for you. Thanks for sharing. :clapping:

I agree. I see it all the time in SCGA Match Play. + 2' shooting 79, 1's,2's and even 3's shooting 72-74 and winning out right.

LOL....I was better than scratch when I lived at Bay Hill. I was a good player on that course. The first time I followed the Tour guys around, (Tiger, Love, Couples, Mickelson, etc), I felt pretty inept at the game of golf.......Television does no justice!!!.........

Yup that is how I see it. I think he was +5.6 @ the rock last I saw. Rahm is a +9.5 At his home course.

Phil could beat an average “scratch” with a 700 yard disadvantage with just 6-7 clubs. At his current age.

in his prime, Phil could play right handed and win

Obee, I forgot to ask.

Were you and your playing partners back at the tips enjoying the strikes and flights up close?

A bit, yes. But really, we were just trying to win. Give us enough strokes and we can. We lost 3 and 2 to them. Held our own and I played very well both times we played them. 72, 71, if I remember correctly. Phil was 71, 71, I think. He was 19th in the world at the time. Rickie shot 66, 68? He was 4th in the world at the time, I think...

Just joking around, didn’t realize this thread was another retelling of your great conquests.

you know I’ve actually played with/vs Rickie twice, I just don’t post about it, until now.

Phil though, I have not. That’s pretty cool!

No chance even at Phils age now. Sometimes I wonder what people think scratch means because they act like they are close to making a living on the pro tours.

Just an observation… Are you not the same person that resurrected the ‘LPGA player vs. middle aged scratch or better’ thread after 2 years???
Now this?! lol

Someone posted this thread in that one and said read it. So I did. It is even dumber than that one. LPGA one is very relevant to current golf because it is getting talked about a lot right now and Foreplay is filming matches.

Why is it dumber? Lots of interest in this thread when it came out. Lots of good discussion. Interesting look into a real life Match between amateurs and professionals.

I get that you and OBee are going at it a little bit but there’s nothing inherently dumb about either thread.

I’ve played with OBee  a ton of times in Southern California. Maybe 50 times now.

The one club where he is a member is Bear Creek. Over the years, it has had multiple PGA winners as members.

Off the top of my head, Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson, Tom pernice  Junior.

Probably 15 guys on the korn ferry tour.

multiple Southern California amateur champions, and mid champions.

One amateur champion that’s qualified for the US senior open multiple times.

Point being, OBee has been around high-level golf for a long time.  The matches that he has are often interesting reads because of the way he details them.  Now whether or not you believe that high-level amateurs can  compete against pros is your opinion, but you can’t deny that there’s been some good discussion in both of these threads.
