Definitely scratch team play. We were defending champs, and literally every point matters -- and you're playing for an entire team of guys, not just yourself.

 

In the past, I would have said that they were equally nerve wracking, but now when I play with pros, I figure I have nothing to lose (except $$$ LOL!) and I just play my best and enjoy the experience!

Great story. Great round too considering that sort of pressure. It came as no surprise that one area where Phil had an advantage was his ability to make eagles on the par 5s. Making eagles regularly is a huge advantage to the long bombers.

Ober is one of the classiest guys I have had the privilege of golfing with. We have some big personalities in the groups we typically play with, some good, some bad.. but Ober is definitely one of the most positive people out there. Not to mention, his game is very solid and he's always looking to help a fellow golfer. A lot of guys that are competitive amateurs are definitely not like Ober, in fact, they are the exact opposite.

Stories like this are what separates golf from other sports. Only in golf can an everyday guy get a taste of what it is like to play with a pro and share the game- plus have a little on the line to keep it interesting. Great way to start the new year. It was like a "playing lesson with a pro" on GC. Enjoyed reading it.

I seem to recall a local scratch or -1 golfer beat a Champions tour player on that course. He was excited for sure, as it was an exceptional day for him. Of course, that Champion tour player isn't Phil. I believe on any given day, a scratch player, even 1-2 on a fast running home course like that one, could beat a "+" player, especially if strokes are involved. Golfers at that level might swing as much as 10 strokes in either direction. Then again, that course has a lot of fade tee shot holes which Phil could take advantage of, if he's on his game. But 2-3 on the front with adjust at the turn might prove fun.

 

PS: I read your 18 hole coverage. No doubt it was memorable for you. Thanks for sharing. :clapping:
