I know Reed is often criticized for having a chip on his shoulder for the lack of "appreciation" for how good he really is. This year's tournament billboards, posters etc featured several marquee players. Guess who wasn't on a single one. Top ten OWGR and last years champion, Reed.

I am starting to think the chip on his shoulder is legitimate.

Also, kudos to Patrick for attempting to learn how to hit a fade in competition. (Or maybe just a smaller hook). I guess he does not want to remain a one dimensional shotmaker like Kenny Perry.

His family doesn't like him, his Jr. golf peers never liked him, his College teammates didn't like him, his fellow Tour players don't seem too fond of him, and now it seems even the Tour doesn't think too highly of him even still.

Should he have a chip on his shoulder because of that? I guess? Maybe he always has and that's the problem, i dont know

Disclaimer: Not trying to change the topic of this thread, just offering my perspective as someone who plays and watches/follows even more pro golf than I probably should...

I do think this guy has some demons in the closet, but who doesn't? He prob made some bad calls in a super competitive and high stakes game of college golf. But isn't that true of all high level college athletes who come from a tougher situation or who have had some problems with there family/friends growing up? Not saying he had it hard, but there were clearly some issues/question marks.

I don't think there are many of the younger pro's who don't like him. I actually think he may have made a couple friends because of his drive/ self belief and strong results. He seems pretty quite from a "fan" perspective. He has an edge and possibly some temper issues, but those are typically traits of a super competitive person. Speith and Rory have also been questioned for similar behavior early in there careers. Obviously there is a history with a few pro's who have had some run-ins in college, but I think that his game and record speak for themselves with those guys. And if there are hard feelings, shouldn't we call those guys the poor sports?

One thing for sure is that he def uses all the nay-sayers and constant Jordan/Rory/Day/Rickie talk and promotion as motivation to play better and compete harder. He is a full fledged member of both the PGA and Euro Tours and has played more than all the other guys. He is driven and wants to be the best and doesn't really care what anyone else thinks. It sure is fun to watch... from my perspective(couch) :D

Some grand sweeping statements based on the words of a handful of guys don't ya think?

None of us know him (but this is the Internet and what's stopping us from bagging on someone we don't know at all?), but what was written of him in Slaying the Tiger made him come off like Michael Jordan (personality-wise). Everything I've read of Jordan indicates he was an obsessed alpha dog a****** who lived to win (again I have no personal experience with Jordan either so my impressions could be 100% wrong). All that said, I respect the hell out of Jordan for his accomplishments and wonder whether he could have done the same without the attitude (I personally doubt it). I'm certainly not saying Reed is in Jordan's class, but he may be just as obsessed with winning. Apply that to the lone wolf game that is golf, and perhaps that's what's going on with Reed.

I've seen more people engage him, laugh with him than I've seen rip into him. This is the same nonsense that followed Tiger that "all pros hate him." That was never the case and that's not the case with Patrick. If he has the same attitude as Jordan, that's great for him. Look through history. Almost all of the "greats" were a*******. You have to be. Jordan, Tiger, Hogan, Ali, Tyson, Bonds, Ruth, McEnroe. There's not even a handful that didn't have that a****** gene; Gretsky, Jack, Russell, Montana are really the only "greats" that don't seem to have that gene.

I agree 100%. I was trying to compile a list of greats who were also considered really nice guys during their playing years. It wasn't very long...

I agree, it's not an excuse nor am I advocating that people should live that way. I'm simply pointing out that many "great athletes " (as defined by worldly accomplishments) are so obsessed with winning that it impairs their ability or desire to treat others with respect. The only way they know to go about winning big leaves a trail of pissed off/turned off people behind them. Or maybe they are just a******* who also happen to be really good at sports. Certainly, there are many a******* who've accomplished nothing in sports or life (I'm sure we're all related to some of them).

I don't know, I think it's kind of nice to have a "villain" in the mix (relatively speaking of course). Jordan, Jason, and Rickie are just so wonderful it's okay for a counterbalance. For some strange reason I can't explain, I like Patrick Reed. Before I read Slaying the Tiger, he was another faceless PGA Tour Pro to me. I also think Rory has a bit of the edge in him. Spice can be good.

There are two interpretations of this photo.

1. He is externally smiling while internally hating them all and wanting to go straight to the first tee to play a match for $10000 a hole to prove how awesome he is.

2. He thinks they are joking with him while they really are just making him the joke and laughing at him.

I like Reed. He goes against the grain. Everyone nowadays says you need to be athletic and fit in order to succeed at the top of the game, and here's a man who spends his paychecks on KFC, beer and elasticated waist pants.

Golf is better than it's been since 2008 when it was Tiger/Phil and a bunch of interchangeable bores. Golf needs guys who are not just good players but interesting, whether it's because they're jerks or not it doesn't matter. Golf is great to watch right now because of guys like Reed and Bubba, as well as Rory, Spieth, Day, DJ, Fowler, etc.

I hated Reed early on. His Top 5 comment was ridiculous, but you can't fault him for his confidence. During the Ryder Cup all my hatred for him went away. He was the only one to show up for the US team. Then I got to meet him at the Memorial Tournament and at the Bridgestone Inv. and saw that he was nice and really great with the fans.

Did reed get rid of the choker? I don't mind his personality and he's a hell of a player, but I hope the choker is gone.

Absolutely the way I would take that. Some guys just can't help themselves. I've been there many times in my life. And when you make a fool of yourself, you just have to laugh at yourself afterwards.
