I've been using a putter with a counterweight in the shaft butt since 2010. Conventional length (started at 35.5" for me), 375 gram head, 75 gram Balance Certified adjustable counterweight under the grip. 11 one-putts first time in the bag, never looked back. I also built one to 38" with a longer grip along the lines of today's "counterbalanced" models, but didn't like it. On longer putts I like to hold the putter at full playing length, so 38" doesn't work for me. Basically I just like the additional overall weight, with a swing weight around E0.

Different strokes for different folks!

Quarters weigh about 5.7 grams and it's easy to experiment with counter balancing by sticking two on the head and five on the butt end of the grip. (I think the 2 to 5 ratio is correct to keep the swingweight roughly the same.)

As for me, I have a putter with a 350 gram head and it always felt a bit heavy to me. I installed a 112 gram Lamkin UTx grip and now it feels great. A little extra weight in the head and a little extra in the grip makes it feel more solid somehow. It feels like it's easier to keep the putter on the correct line.

This article states 84% golf better with counterbalance putter? But I didn't see any evidence proving it??

I do remember reading wrx's article disproving this exact idea.. So

Where do they get that % ?

Total BS. I don't buy it. Handicaps are not dropping like flies. Either you can putt or you can't. Same with all this "modern" rapid release technology. All BS. The USGA limits on clubs was met long ago. All smoke and mirrors. Either you can play or you can't. New clubs and a new putter won't make you better.

Agree with both "you can or you can't" and "it works for me"....

I think good putting has much to do with visualization....some people "see" the putt better than others...

The counter-balance putter I've tried these past few months (Ghost/Spider) does ENCOURAGE a "straight-line sense of shaft" from shoulder to club head, but that doesn't guarantee it nor a stable swing-path (the objective, I think, of the CB shaft)....

I think golfers who are good putters find the right stroke...tempo/length/swing path...for each putter's weight/swing weight/head balance....

I'd bet many of us have more than one putter (okay, maybe a bag-full, if you're like me) and they all work great, (when we are), right?

Yes a counterbalanced putter may help some golfers - their prevalence on tour isn't particularly large so I believe that speaks volumes. Having said that, I've had a counter balanced X7m for a few months now and personally I think it's no better or worse than the conventional X5 I used to use, admittedly it's being tested on slow, wet UK greens at the moment so I'm sticking with for a while.

Putting is definitely an art rather than a science, for me a good putter can hole out with an 8802 or a Taylormade Dadddy Long Legs - they understand how to square the force up at impact and put a good roll on the ball - something I've struggled with for a year or 2, hence the counter balance experiment to try and get some confidence back. Yes I realise I should have got some lessons and a training aid instead of the putter, but where's the fun in that?

I tried the counterbalance for a little while at the beginning of this year. I thought it was great from about 10 feet and in. It really did help put the ball on line. However I thought it was extremely difficult on longer putts. Maybe I just didn't practice enough (played about 20 rounds with it) but anything outside of 20 feet was a complete crapshoot. I made a ton of 4 to 8 footers with it, but I also had WAY more 4 to 8 footers than I did with a normal weighted putter.

Counterbalance putters are great for those who struggle with face manipulation on shorts putts. obviously all putting takes works and any puts over 15ft seems to be where people have the trouble.

Like bely putters, there is something to the technology, but without practice, is going to be seen as just another gimmick.

I have one and rotate it in from time to time. but don't have the desire to practice and put it in full time. I really like it for slower greens.

Do they even define what "better" is? I didn't read the whole article so maybe they did.

Seems like just marketing trying to toss a huge number out there to move some flat sticks. "Better" could be making one extra 10 footer out of 100 ten footers. Which to a Pro might actually matter but for the rest of us we wouldn't notice that difference.

I have been using the Scotty Newport CB since it was introduced and I am a dramatically better putter with it. The area I have seen the biggest improvement is putts 10' and in. For some reason I would get a bit yippy on those putts. It was almost like I would just totally lose my stroke. For me personally the CB performs even better than an anchored putter.

I have had a somewhat opposite experience. A year and a half with the CB Ghost Spyder. I have become a very good lag putter from being a very poor long putter. My weakness remains putts from 6 ft in. Problem is probably related to the fact that I have a long, smooth stroke on the long putts, which works wonderfully for me. The length of the stroke obviously does not work on the shorter putts, however, so I have to have a different stroke for the shorter ones. Haven't mastered that yet, but the short putts are still better than before the CB putter.

I own the Boccieri Heavy Putter Mid Weight,L4 Model.I've made a ton of putts with this.

Basically,a counter balanced putter allows the large muscles to work and takes the hands out of your swing.

Highly recommend trying if you tend to be too"handsy" in your putting stroke, like I used to be.

Also own the Spider Ghost.Put a 17" Winn Grip on it which changed the feel.Am looking to put a stock grip back on it.

Knowing what kind of putter stroke you are can go a long way in determining what kind of putter you should own.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been using counterbalanced putters for quite some time. Before the word was even being used I would run my conventional length putters with a heavy head and shaft and a butt weight.

Like some have mentioned, it really helps me from 6' in.

I think the counter balance is great as an aid or trainer of sorts. When my stroke starts getting a little loose, a session with the counter balance tightens everything back up, even though gaming it has never worked out well.

I briefly tried a CB putter last year (Bettinardi Inovai). The first round I played with it, I was really doing well. Then, for some reason, I just started doing worse every round. I couldn't get anything to the hole, and if I consciously tried to, I'd knock it way past. So, I had to sell that and move on. I'm also a proud putter ho, switching sticks quite often, and when one of those putters is wildly different than all the others, that just doesn't work.
