"Top 5"

Looks like Patrick Reed wants to back up his talk. He is currently at number World # 10. We he ever make it to his self proclaimed top 5?

I am impressed with his play the last 4 months or so. I say he reaches OWGR #5 while he is still 25 years old. That would put him in some pretty good company. He has got to get a couple more W's to make it happen.

Indeed. Moving up to the top 10, you can do with strings of high finishes. To move around within the top 10 takes wins. I hope he does it.

The melt here would be delicious if Bubba and Reed were both in the top 10. Such polarizing figures, they must be good for golf.

I've taken my shots at "Top 25," but Patrick has more than convinced me he has what it takes to be a Top 5 guy.

When Patrick first made that remark, only Rory was playing at an ultra-high level. Now that Jordan and Jason have joined Rory, there is precious little room to squeeze into the top 5.

It's going to be a lot of fun watching how things transpire. You just know that guys like Bubba, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson and Adam Scott not only have the game to crack the top 5 (or stay there), but they also seem inspired and determined to do so. Great times indeed.

I think Adam Scott might fall in ratings because of the new anchor ban. He didn't look comfortable or confident at all with the regular putter last spring.

With his play as of late I fully believe he could crack the top 5. Wether it will be this year or not is going to be another story. He's got his work cut out for him, speaking of that maybe if could hit a cut it would be easier for him. Think he's got a shot at Augusta and maybe a PGA. A major would secure his Top 5 claim, bit if he can get a few wins this year I think he'll silence a lot of critics.

He definitely has the game and the confidence to go with it to make it the Top 5. As has been stated, he could use winning a little more but even as I type that, I think of ol' Jim Fuyrk. Clearly he has won a lot over the span of his career but he hung in and around the Top 5 whilst not exactly being the most prolific of winners.

If I recall correctly, Pat Reed said he ALREADY was one of the top 5 players in the world, not that he's going to be...that was the problem. I remember being at the 2014 U S Open and when Reed walked on the range people were saying, "There's Top 5". Felt a little bad for him and wondered how long that label was going to stick. My guess is his whole career.

What he actually said was that he believed he was a top 5 player and that if he continued to play the way he knows he can, that the points will prove it.

I never understood what was wrong with that statement to begin with. It's called confidence and nobody ever won anything without it.

The media's need to create a villian out of anybody who doesn't do the "aw shucks, I'm just doing the best I can" routine is tiresome.

"I just don’t see a lot of guys that have done that, besides Tiger Woods, of course, and, you know, the other legends of the game. It’s just one of those things, I believe in myself and – especially with how hard I’ve worked – I’m one of the top five players in the world". At the time of his statement, I'm not sure he'd even played in a single major at that time.

Even Spieth joked about Reed's comment last April. Speith jokingly said, "I feel like I've been playing like a top five player in the world". Of course at the time Spieth was ranked 4th in the world. Funny but classy.

To answer the OP's question, I think Reed will be ranked top 5 at some point during his career.

Unless someone is the type of person that takes everything literally to prove a point, it's pretty straightforward what he says. Take out the hyphenated clause and you have:

I believe in myself

I believe I am a top 5 player

Pretty obvious.

And since you brought it up can you recall the reason why he had never played in a Major up to that point?

It is always the same! The media bemoan the lack of 'personalities' in golf. All the stars are boring and don't do anything out of the ordinary or controversial but as soon as they do, as Reed has done, and they slaughter him.

If he makes the Top 5, he won't survive there very long. There's too much scrutiny on the Top 5, a cheater will always get caught.

Norman was on top for a long time though.

I've never heard of Norman's honesty with the game, being questioned. I'm not saying it didn't happen, I've just never heard of it.

So you think Reed is cheating on tour? Got any proof besides yourself?

I'm sure the mindset is "It's only a matter of time, because hey, it's happened before." So basically he might as well have done it already, whether he has or not.

Everybody knows about his college controversies, which have nothing to do with any play on Tour. No hint or suggestion of any issues.

But, considering the source, who always likes to spout the alleged issues of even Hall of Famers like a self-appointed National Enquirer, I'm not surprised.

I don't think Reed has lied about his handicap on this forum.

I never accused Gary Player of cheating, Tom Watson did. Call me crazy, but Tom Watson is probably a fairly credible source.

About a zillion people accused Player or Rabbit Dyer of cheating at The Open in 1974. The evidence seems overwhelming, but who knows?

Ken Venturi accused Arnold Palmer of cheating. Call me crazy, but Venturi should be a credible source. Unfortunately in this case, there's some question about Venturi's interpretation of the rules.

Any other Hall of Famers in question?

& any time you'd like to check my handicap, you can go to my Profile and plug my information into GHIN search. I'm sorry, I don't have the time nor inclination to update my Profile every time there's a GHIN revision ... but I usually hover between 5-7.

No no. It's not lying - it's leaving it at its lowest value 6 months after it's been anywhere near there, because he really believes he's a 4.x index ;)

As I said, I don't think Reed has lied about his handicap, didn't mention yours.

The rest of your post just proves the point. No reason to bring up Gary or Arnie (you were taking shots at his personal life a few days ago), you can't help it.

As for Venturi, now he's a credible source that Palmer cheated? LOL, you've gone out of your way forever on here to publish your negative personal views and interactions with Ken Venturi every chance you get.

You like letting everyone know the pros have real or imagined skeletons in their closets, and somehow you are "in" on the stories. It's a forum, go wild. But when they aren't germane, seems a little over the top to drag them out.
