How much validity do you put in a virtual golf round?

Look guys, it's -20 here and there's a foot of snow on the ground LOL. It's not like we have the option to go out and play pebble beach for real. Saying "zero" validity is fairly ridiculous and made a bit more for dramatic effect. You still actually have to swing a club and make good contact with the ball. My wife isn't going to walk into the room and shoot 73 at Pinehurst. I've seen plenty of people complain about the machines "not reading their shots properly", these are usually higher indexes. If you're playing with 5-6 foot gimmes and no mulligans, you still have to hit the ball really well to go shoot a 72

It's not a video game, because you are making real swings and hitting real balls. And zero validity would be the validity to what i shoot in a dream

It's not real golf, and you'll be probably 5-10 shots better on average. But it's better then sitting at home imagining you are golfing

brianl99 always plays with 5 foot gimmes

^^^ i think the lowest we can put them at is around 5 feet, i can't think of a system with lower then that. Because of the screen and the sensors, anything shorter then that you can't see the hole on the screen

I meant all rounds of golf. and I'm pretty sure the one I used to play on would go down to 3. either way a 10 foot putt was terribly unrealistic. anything under 100 yards is a joke. and just because the monitor is accurate doesn't mean the surface it is considering is.

most people will show roll out with irons on trackman, yet put them on a real golf course and most better players are not rolling out their irons. getting the right information on the ball is one half the equation.

Wait, Canadians are banned from entering the us? Or is it just those from Montreal? So not zero but maybe virtually zero? Such a fun thread. It as a chilly, but sunny, 50 here in the holy city.

Well, technically i could play Pebble i guess, but airfare and green fees....well, let's just say it's not a weekly activity for many people

And like capking says, with our dollar the way it is, just going to McDonalds in the US requires a bank loan

Come to Charlestown. Bring smoked meat. Intro you to our friend bill m (well maybe ...) Play kiawah. Eat at goodness gracious so so so many places. Makes my head swim. Take out smaller bank loan. We'll watch the habs at king street grille.

Absolutely zero. You're playing a video game!

LMAO, Thank You-

Let's see....

In a store, off a mat, absolutely no rough, regardless of where ya land, probably by yourself(even if you're in a group, WTF???), ball goes 20-25' or less, yea, sounds legit to me, lmao-

Well, one good thing, ya don't have to worry bout any lift and cleans, lol-

The weather sucks here and it's 4°, I hope yours is milder Bro :)

Will repeat it again....it depends on the unit you are using.

I have a GC2 in my basement and assure you, people that suck outdoors still suck when they come over. Good players outdoors are still good indoors.

It isn't the same as outdoor golf but it's better than sitting on the couch doing nothing.

And so too shall I repeat myself.....

It's a virtual game, regardless of what unit that you are using. I am not nor have I ever disputed the accuracy. That's irrelevent to me in the grand scheme of things.

I would spend that time doing slo mo "mirror" work with 1/4 & 1/2 swings working on further ingraing those positions into my muscle memory and subconscious...

But ya gotta remember that I'm the same guy that up until I exited the game in '12 used only divot and ball flight to work on my swing....

Kinger asked, I answered and that's just me :)

If it helps you, your swing and your game, that's all that matters-

And besides, I wasn't even responding to you so I have no idea what ya said, as I didn't read your post and was simply answering the question asked-

Seriously, with what I got goin on now, I could care less if it's the greatest thing for the game since Gene Sarazen invented the sand wedge :)

Have a great week Bro :)

All the Best,

RP

I definitely think the short game would be great practice if you have a technical, numbers based wedge game. If you're a feel player you're in trouble because it's hard to get a feel for the shot when looking at a two dimensional screen. I switch to "feel" at about 50 yards in real life and so a 40 yarder on a sim for me is a crapshoot.

As others have said, if you're playing on a high quality LM like a GC2 your carry and curvature numbers are going to be spot on.

As others have said, one big factor is you always have perfect lies.

Overall I shoot about the same scores that I do on a real course. I think the benefit I get from perfect lies is offset by my difficulty with putting. I suspect with frequent use of a sim that I'd get a better feel for the putting and start to shoot a few strokes better than my real life average, but who knows. A GC2 with simulator is unfortunately still in the planning stages around my house...

Bump. Not trying to say in any way that you can compare scores but we just got a Golfzon sim nearby and it's ridiculously good. Still hitting off a mat but it actually picks up bunkers/chips/putts and severely penalizes for slight misses contact wise. I'm not about to brag about a score but I'd put down my normal bets with playing partners and not complain about it being the sims fault if I lost a few bucks.

Zero. I usually end up working my way into some goofy positions, screwing up shoulder or neck from impacts, and grooving some faults that prove frustrating/fatal the past few years in March trips to California, once I get outdoors. I'd have been better off not playing.

Seems like many don't have the problems I do, but it screws me up. Putting on the simulators we have, and chipping, is totally unrealistic and worthless.

It's not just me!

It's good therapy for the winter months, and you get decent feedback on full swing shots. We have four sim bays at my home course, and we have a group of 8 taking up two of them every Saturday morning while we wait for winter to end. There is money on the line, 6 ft gimmes, and bloody mary's from the bar. Could be worse.
