GOAT's WITB Polar Vortex Redux

Recommended Posts

SPECS

Driver: 44.5" D3; M1 430 Tour Issue w/ Attas 6; Nice sound with pretty consistent flight and distance.

FWY: 42.5" D2; Anything under 16* of loft and I have difficulty getting it up in the air. With this it's high, but penetrating. It's a larger head, and took some adjustment, but it does what I want it to do and fills a gap. Great off the tee and great off the deck once you establish a feel for it.

HYB: 40" D2; PXG 22* w/ Speeder Hybrid 90; A more forgiving i series.

5-9: US length 38" 5 iron; D2 SSx1; Best iron Miura has released (opinion). I've had them in play since they were released. I started off with super peening blues, but after all the hype of the modus I had to trial a set. I had the 125's installed in May of last year (2015) and haven't looked back. I personally think they are the direct offspring of either a modus 120 and s300, or a modus 120 and SPB variant. The blend of feel and stability with these heads and shafts are nearly unparalleled.

PW: D3.5

53*/59*: D4; Not much to reaffirm here, they're just a no gimmick tool. I don't think Nippon can out do the S400 wedge just yet though, back to the labs. There is just something about the heft and predictability of the s400 that keeps me coming back (I would like to try the Modus 120 in the wedges, but will have to dial them in with the irons first).

Putter: D? Odyssey White Hot XG #7; I really like a blade for a putter, but hack's need forgiveness.

All clubs are gripped with BCT cord and one wrap of tape.

I dig the bag GOAT, I just played my first round today with the CB 57's and those things are pure! I like the whole bag, I wouldn't let go of those 57's if you jump on the PXG 0311 or t's, they might not live up to your expectations that have built up the last 5 or 6 months

under review...

All clubs fitted and custom made by Cool Clubs.

Loving this setup. It's not like anyone elses so you must be playing what works.

Yes, that's about the only thing that I agree with Tom Wishon on. As players evolve they essentially fit themselves into equipment that works. I appreciate the comment!

It's all talk man (cabin fever), it's my first winter not being able to play. While I am intrigued about the PXG, I've developed a particular expectation with the 57's that probably can't be replicated. Appreciate the comment!

iblades - more details. Nippon shafts? How do you like them?

Stock AWT 2.0 shafts. They feel similar to Modus 120 in my opinion, but supposedly a bit flighted. I like the iBlades a lot. The swing weights feel noticeably lighter than the Miura's and the feel is definitely a bit harsh compared to the Miura's, but I like the look and turf interaction. I notice the bounce difference between the two clubs. All in all a pleasant set if irons. I'm glad that I didn't off load my Miura for them, but I will give them a fair trial.

I also like having a fully functional bag, although every club is from a different manufacturer. I'll prob get an i200 5 iron to fill the gap between the 6 iron and 22* hybrid.

This is my favourite WITB, idk why but everything in you bag i would game, is in my price range (Maybe not the irons) and is a good looking club. cheers :golfer:

I appreciate the props! You can find very reasonable deals on the cb 57s. In fact most sets are going for cheaper than some retail oems these days.

Great gear man. Pings always did feel light to me. I enjoyed the S55's. How is the launch in the iBlade compared to your Miura's? Easier launch or similar?

I launch the Miura's pretty high, but I've gotten to where I like it. I don't know what the tour heights are, but when I get on a monitor the dude running it says the heights are up there with PGA tour launch.

I played a tourney a few years ago and every time I hit 6 iron all of the other participants thought I was hitting 9 iron based on the visual ball flight.

The iBlades seem to be a bit lower, they seem flighted. The miuras seem like they have more or less similar launch angles throughout the set (which I like). The iBlades have a more discernible flight for each iron throughout the set.

How are you hitting the M1 and is it a lot longer than the D3?

I can't tell of any distance gains between the two. I'm more about how the club sounds, ball flight and consistency. The M1 430 sounds much better than the D3. I lucked up on a tour head and the look at address suits my eye. The retail heads appear too upright.

I think my trial with the iBlades may be over. The ball flight looks loose and unstable (floaty). I like the high penetrating flight of my modus and cb combo, although I still need to dial in the 120s.

I tried two sets of iBlades and came to the same conclusion. I prefer the S55's.

In the store, they were stellar. My first course session was decent too. It had been raining all day and the sole performed well with the wet conditions. But when I played them in the prime weather, I began to see/feel that these aren't what the pros play. The pros have to have some sort of special grind or something on them. These just do not perform well on tight lies (too much bounce). I also couldn't get a feel for those touch shots around the green with the scoring clubs (individual results will certainly vary).

Ping's quality control is also shat; the PW's stabilizing bar was hardly intact. I'd expect with their new price increase that they'd at least have tighter quality control measures. For a $1,100 iron set, I'd discourage anyone from splurging on them. You can get a set of Miura heads for 900 from tour spec and then have your fitter of choice install nearly any shaft for just over a couple hundred.

Very good choices. Impressed.

I would enjoy all your choices as I hit about the same length as you. Play well/enjoy.

You are correct of going for the more stable forgiving putter. When the heat is on, its needed.

Tested this the other day. I personally believe the 900 forged and 900 tour are PXG killers.

Too bad they really aren't direct competitors.

If Mizuno would add the entire Modus line, then they'd be hard-pressed to not consider.

They look so good. Can you compare them to anything? Ever hit MP64's?
