Barton Creek - Need Info

I've played Crenshaw, and fazio foothills and canyons. The Fazio courses are awesome, Crenshaw is ok.

But this happened to me recently. I was going to swing through and stay one night and play one round, and obviously I wanted to play one of the Fazio courses. The resort wouldn't let me ask about course availability until after I booked a room (at $300 a night). So I booked my room, and then tried to book golf. They told me that foothills was closed like the above poster said but ONLY made Crenshaw available to me as Fazio canyons was "only available for member play that day". I tried to call the director of golf to try to circumvent it but they said no dice.

So really weird scenario for a place that is only open to members and guests. I don't really get the hierarchy when you're a resort, not a country club, and room rates are expensive. I'm not saying I wouldn't go back, but it left a sour taste in my mouth and I probably wouldn't go out of my way to go back there.

It's both a resort and a Country Club. There is a separate private clubhouse for club members. Their policy is that one of the three in town courses is member only every day and it rotates. So most likely you would have been playing Canyons if you were there a day earlier or a day later.

I don't understand why they would not tell you which course is available before you booked a room. There is no reason to do that. Next time, either call the pro shop or send me a PM and I'll tell you which courses are available.

BTW, the fourth course is 30 minutes west of Austin but worth the trip. It's a Palmer design and I love playing it. It's always available to resort guests and usually easy to get a tee time.

Save your money and try Falconhead in Lakeway or Avery Ranch in North Austin. Both are very nice courses and won't cost you an arm and a leg. I'm not too fond of Wolfdancer, I think for the price, you could find a nicer course to play.

I'll second the Falconhead recommendation. I visited a friend that had just moved to Bee Cave and we wanted to play Barton Creek but decided it wasn't worth the hassle and cost. Playing the neighborhood course instead (which was Falconhead) turned out great.
