Equipment change, game change?

So I just switched over from an old square two set of irons that my father bought me when I was younger. These were regular shafts. I then just recently bought some wilson fg tour m3 irons stiff shaft. Love the look of them!

Went to the simulator (because i live in wisco) to test out my new clubs and I couldn't hit them worth a dang. I am a 7 handicap and I was topping balls, pulling them left, hitting off the toe. I figured I would be a little off because it's my first change of sets in 10 years, but I didn't think it would be this bad.

My question is, is this because I am not used to the irons yet? It's a big change, because the Wilsons have a smaller head a different shaft and stiffness. Has this happened to anyone else? Do I just need to get more practice time with them?

There is always going to be some kind of learning curve and growing pains when you get new irons. Are the lengths the same? How much difference in the shafts. You typically shouldn't be topping shots left and right if you are a 7 hdcp no matter what the change. You may need a proper fitting. If you are pulling left, lie may be off. There are 100 factors that could lead to your shot getting worse.

From your post, it seems that you hadn't hit the Wilsons before you bought them. Even still it is odd that you can't hit them at all.

6 years ago I went from an older set of cavity back irons to Wilson Ci7's and it was so much nicer even with different lofts and shaft lengths. I didn't try those first either.

If you have a decent swing, I'm wondering if you got so pumped up with high expectations on the simulator that you may have just swung way beyond your ability to control it. Those numbers on the screen do have a way of doing that.

The shafts I used in my old clubs didn't have a name on them. Just said square two and that they were regular stiffness. The Wilsons are dynamic golf xp s300. The length and lie look to be the same, but I can't tell exactly on the lie. Thank you for your advice!

I was just looking for some reassurance about getting jacked up. Because I was pretty excited to play with the new clubs. I think it is just going to take time to get used to them. Moving to a smaller head and a stiffer shaft. Now when I looked back at the marks on my clubs from the balls they all look to be toward the toe. Just gotta fix that.

I mean I haven't switched irons for 10 years, so it's going to feel different. Just can't wait to take them to an actual course! Thanks!

There is absolutely a honeymoon period with any new equipment. Yes you can get fitted, yes you can adjust swing weights etc. to make them feel how you want, but ultimately there is something to be said about you having to adjust some to you're equipment. I typically don't like to switch more than 1 part of my set at a time, however I am in the middle of changing pretty much everything at once. New 3 wood and shaft, new 3-pw and shafts, and I just went back to Vokey's from Mizuno/Scratch. Oh and I have some new putters coming as I'm going back to classic heel-toe from a center shafted mallet.... The better and more experienced you are, the quicker you adjust. I have also found that new clubs and swing feelings = better more focused practice, for me anyway. If you see potential in the clubs work with them, It will take awhile before you fully 100% trust them. Getting fitted is important, and it does help, correct shaft profiles and flexes would be the biggest deal, and as long as lie angles are pretty close you'll be fine, not many flat lies outside of the pro shop mat.

I too love the looks of those m3 heads. Last year, I went to an outdoor golf demo and hit them in the regular flex and was topping them as well. Could not figure out why. My gamers are Adams cb3s or Maltby TEs. My suggestion is to keep practicing with them (to get rid of the winter rust in your swing). Maybe, bring your older irons along as well. Once your swing is grooved, could be the lie or the shafts. What is your swing speed and usual distance with a 7 iron?

15 hcp

If your struggling with new irons as a 7 hdcp in hitting the center of the club face it is likely the total weight of your irons has changed. With the little bit of spec info you provided it would not be a surprise if you went up 20g in shaft weight. Regardless of stiffness or swing weight a good player is very sensitive to change in shaft weight before stiffness.

Give your mind/body connection some time to adjust to this new weight and you should be back to hitting the middle of a 7 iron face. From there you can start looking at ball flights from middle strikes and check lie angles and the stiffness feel to see if your purchase

Is a good fit.

If possible measure your old clubs for swing weight, length and total weight and compare to your new set.

Sure a proper professional fitting is the way to go but you chose another path

Here is your problem. And, I have done this. You get a new club and you are so excited to see that piercing smashing crush of the ball you look up early. Happens all the time to me when I get a new club.

Alternatively, i'm so excited to get the new clubs out on course and tear it up!!

The inevitable fall follows shortly after..... :taunt:

BINGO!!

This and the fact that the lighting in most hitting bays is TERRIBLE!!! I normally hit the ball MUCH better on real grass than I do off mats in a bay.

Not sure what my swing speed is but I hit my 7 iron of my old set on average 160 yards. My max 8 iron was a dead on 150

Give it a few more range sessions. Maybe you were just having a bad swing day. As a 7 I'm surprised you'd be topping balls and such. Maybe just a little too excited to hit the new sticks! Good luck.

I think that I was too excited. I wasn't hitting my driver good that day as well, so I think I was just to anxious to try the clubs. Thanks for the info!

I absolutely love my m3 irons. I had my 4 iron bent two degrees strong and my 5 iron bent one strong to fill a gap in my bag. But other than that I couldn't be more happy with my m3 irons. They produce a lot of spin to stop the ball and are much more forgiving than other forged irons with similar builds I have tried.

Awesome, I'm glad you like them! Just gotta get used to them then. I love the looks of them and I don't have money to get fitted and stuff, so I found these at an amazing price and I couldn't pass it up. Can't wait to use them on an actual course.

Also idk how tall u are but they are 1/4" or 1/2" under standard for other clubs that took me a little to get used to and maybe the reason u are topping it. After I adjusted to them I feel great. I matched my best round of the year yesterday in bad conditions super soggy and for the first 7 holes partially frozen greens that wouldn't hold any spin. I think u will have an adjustment period then will love them.

I am 5' 9" and I matched them up with my old irons and they are the same length. Congrats on the best round man! Keep grinding! I can't wait until I can get back out there!

Seriously you need to get a good fitter to check the flex on your old irons versus the new irons on a frequency counter or 'tuner" as we call it. Never ever believe a shaft label as to what it says it is. Also with mass produced clubs no matter the brand the shafts may be off on the stiffness. If you really like the clubs a session with a good fitter may be very well worth it. Like another WRXer said there may be a 100 different reasons why they may be off. A good fitter is worth their weight in gold.

Sounds like you may just be a regular shaft guy. I have always been a decent ball striker with good chs, but have never really clicked with S300 in irons. When I think back over all the sets I've owned over the years, all the ones I remember fondly hav had regular dhafts. I've always needed stiff/boardy driver shafts, but with irons R300 is my favorite shaft. I like the extra height I get from R300, and I don't notice any drop in dispersion.

I have started to think the same. I may need regular flex, but the only reason I never got fitted is because I didnt have the money. So I have to off gut feeling. I have played about 3 rounds in this weather in Wisconsin and I am slowly coming around with them, Just need to play more and more the get used the the difference. Otherwise I have grown to love these irons!
