Why do you love to play?

Here's a thread that is dedicated to the greatest game that was ever invented. It seems that no matter who you are, or what you do, we all eventually end up playing golf. Personally, I love everything about the game. You never know who you're gonna run into on the golf course, or what you're gonna shoot. There's just so much to it, and you never have the same round twice.

I love the satisfaction of a every good shot. It's like little victories that you can't get during the week much.

The athlete in me loves that it is hard and that nothing comes easy. Whenever I hit a good shot I can thoroughly enjoy it. When I hit a bad shot it motivates me to to dedicate more practice time. It is also fun that on occasion I can hit a shot that looks similar to what I see on TV. Now this is no often but every once in awhile is enough for me.

 

The engineer in me loves golf clubs. I love to look at the design and think about what makes it work, how it could be made better, and if I think the technology is significant or a marketing gimmick.

its a challenge, but its not just about beating someone else. its about the challenge of personal improvement. then there's the excersize, spending time with friends, being on a beutiful course.

 

but for me, its just a great way of challenging myself. not to mention, its cool to be really, really good at something (which I'm not yet, but will be).

If I had to narrow it down to 2 things, I think the best thing I love about the game is the competition and the comradarie I get from it. I'm the happiest when I'm away at a golf trip with my buds at Myrtle on a 3 or 4 day trip. Nothing but Golf and fun and friendly competition. I could write a novel about golf and what it's done for my life, its never ending. Of course I love to hit pure golf shots, but it's more than that, its the love of the game, the competition and the bonds you build on the course.

For me it's the quiet. No electronic devices or engines or crowds. Just peace for a few stolen hours.

I love it because of the freedom. You make the decisions you want, to reap the rewards or to pay the consequences. It's like an emotional roller coaster ride for 4 hours, and I keep on coming back.

 

It's hard to describe the true exhilaration of splitting the fairway, carving your ball around trees and bunkers, flying an approach close to the hole, or holing a 10 footer for birdie. Not to mention the science and shopping behind all of the new equipment. And of course, there's the new friendships and camaraderie.

 

Best of all, when your buddies are sick or out of town, you can still go out and play by yourself. I can just go on and on...

Golf to me is all about you and nature. It is also about great playing partners and enjoying any sucess you have. Golf connects me to my past, my grandfather taught me to play and love the game. Golf is something i not only enjoy but love, i love walking early morning with noone but me on the course. I love that i only have to count on me and my clubs, noone else. I love the feeling of a great shot or a long putt that curls in the hole.

 

I dont play golf i am a golfer. It gives me a feeling like little else has, only my wife and kids have done this also.

For me it is about versatility. i love that I can go out to the range or the course all by myself and pratice/play alone and relax. The other day I might feel like heading out with a couple of friends and we might play some games on the range or the short game area or just head out and play some competitive holes. Whatever your current mood asks for, golf will be able to provide for it!

The peace and quiet, but oh so challenging. Something I coulndn't get playing basketball, all the trash talking.

Its the constant pursuit of perfection. you NEVER get there... even if you're initials are TW. I love it because every round is different. You can shoot 97, then go back to that same course the next week and shoot 89 (happened to me).

 

Another reason i love it is that my grandfather brought me into the game the summer before my senior year and i am constantly trying to impress him and the second he says "wow, tom! what a shot!" and "i wish i could hit the ball like THAT!" thats what i play for... to better myself and to impress Pappy. (he was diagnosed with lung cancer and is in pretty rough shape and can't play golf anymore. its my job to carry on his legacy.)

I play for the long snaking 60 footer that drops for birdie.

For being in the trees and making a par that you have no business making

For ripping a drive right down the fairway stripe you were aiming for.

For drawing the ball just so on the perfect trajectory to cut the corner.

For chipping in after calling it in a friendly match.

I play for fliers, fried eggs, flops, and friends.

Enjoying everyone's responses! Since I spend so much time working inside behind this computer, I treasure every opportunity to get outdoors. Golf inspires me more than hiking, biking or any other activity to get outdoors. I love playing with friends, playing with strangers, playing alone, playing in the sunshine, playing in the rain, playing in the morning, playing in the evening, playing a variety of courses, playing my home course over and over again, walking, taking a cart, listening to the birds singing and watching the clouds go by in between shots, envisioning a shot and executing it, watching other golfers hit great shots and making long putts, making long putts, making short putts, hitting killer drives after a 3-putt, hitting killer drives after a birdie, birdies, bogies instead of a double bogie, nailing pins with approach shots, hitting Happy Gilmore drives on the range, practicing on the range, practicing on and around the green, and talking about all those things over a beer after the round...

I love the game first and foremost because its a game/sport built upon a tradition of "Honor". I cannot think of another sport where your competition will give kudos for a "well done" shot/performance and truly mean it!
