2016 Texas Conditions Thread

Yes I played it last week.

 

It's in great shape too. Some patches in the back 9 greens but the front 9 seemed flawless. The secondary rough has hard pan still but if the primary rough and fairways were good. Greens good.

 

I'd rank the city course conditions as such:

 

Brack- played Friday. Flawless. Might be best in city behind TPC.

Cedar- played in February

Willow- played yesterday

Olmos- played Thursday

Riverside- played in January

Northern hills- played in February. disappointed considering its price tier within the ACGT.

Mission- biased. I hate this track so much.

 

Canyon Springs punched greens 3 weeks ago or so but I'm told it's back to its normal fast as f*ck greens.

 

Sonterra and oak hills were excellent too in Jan/Feb.

 

I agree with this ranking except, I would slide Brack down quite a bit, IMHO, its not worth the $75 they charge, used to be $36 or something like that and they didn't change it a whole lot to justify the increase in price.

I'm heading down to SA the latter part of the first week in May, wife has a conference to attend Thursday and Friday. I think I'll be playing Cedar Creek on Thursday and Willow on Friday.

 

Oh, and on 04/20, I'll be headed to TPC SA to caddie in the Pro Am during the Valero Tx Open, never played the course, but love it anyway.

 

Playing Brack for the first time since the re-design this Thursday so we'll see how it goes.

 

Would usually not go that far downtown to play but get it as a free round as part of my Alamo GC membership.

Brack is $18 walking on weekdays and $25 weekends with city membership. The $75 is the public and tourist tax thank god

Woodforest is great and Augusta Pines might want to wait a week or so b/c of the greens.

Played Brackenridge Park in San Antonio yesterday for the first time since the redesign and I gotta admit I liked it before the work was done.

 

Now don't get me wrong the condition of the course and especially the greens were in really good shape but all the bunkering they added makes it look unappealing to me.

 

It was already a small piece of land to fit a golf course, especially the back side, and with all the bunkering it makes it feel even smaller. Then you have every par three with either a deep bunker right in front or a forced carry over water.

 

Managed to shoot 81 but really didn't enjoy it and being as I live right next to Cedar Creek I don't think I'll be in a rush to head down there anytime soon.

I just think it's cool that they returned Brack (except the 14th) back to its original 1916 track and bunkering. There's something cool about knowing that course sits exactly as it did in 1916 with the same length and same traps and all.

Played Apple Rock at Horseshoe Bay yesterday, and I have to say it is in really good shape right now. Nice tee boxes, fairways and greens. Add in 20+ mph winds and its a tough course. I heard from some people around the facility that Ram Rock has been infested with Poa Annua during the winter which make the greens bumpy. They'll need to spray to get it out or hope the heat kills it once it get's warm. Outside of that, they say the course is in decent shape as well.

Played Memorial Park yesterday. Greens were punched on the 15th so I'd look elsewhere for the next couple of weeks. Course is starting to fill in otherwise.

Played High Meadow Ranch today and had a blast. They top dressed the greens with a little sand but rolled fine, will be great in a day or so I'd imagine. Outside of Golf Club of Houston Tourney course, this is probably my favorite public track in the Houston metro area. They said they will punch in May so go play it before then.

Played memo park today and had a ton of fun. Course has healed from aeration and rolling pretty well. I shot a little dissapointing 77, but went head to head with a guy that might be 30 years older than me. He was awesome and could move it...watching him play golf made me a little less uneasy that maybe I can play good golf for a while to come.

Played Palmilla Beach on Saturday and was impressed. Greens were in good shape, maybe a tad slow but I thought the course itself was well conditioned.

Shot 71 at Hermann Park. Course was in surprisingly good shape. Fairways were decent and greens were actually pretty damn good...slow but rolled true... Don't get me wrong the layout isn't great and you are ducking from stray balls hitting you but it was in 100% acceptable shape.

Played Vaaler Creek in Blanco two weeks ago and it was in the best shape I have seen in years. I also played Lady Bird golf course in Fredericksburg and the greens are the best I have played in the hill country

Northern Hills looked phenomenal when I was there for my lesson. Gonna play 9 after work tomorrow. Was told its greens could be the best of any public course in SA after brack got wrecked by hail and then got punched early this month.

5/21 - Wildcat Lakes Course - Conitions were very good especially for the $55 we got it for on Golfnow. Been a while since I have played this course...some fun holes but a bunch of really goofy ones too. #2 tee shot from the tips is terrible.

 

5/14 - Memorial Park - Course was in good shape...seemed like it could use a break from all the rain as some of the tee boxes were a little run down.

 

5/7 - Glenloch Pines - Played the Glenn and Pine nines which I prefer over the Loch 9. Course was in very good shape other than the bunkers from all the rain.

5/29 - Wildcat Highlands - conditions were very good, were 90* degree despite all the rain which was awesome...there are just so many goofy holes. Great place to go right after a lot of rain it seems but no way could I play this place on a regular basis.

Played Olympia Hills 5/29 course was in great condition after an overnight rain...drains well. Best deal on the Memorial Day weekend in SA by far! $33 at 2pm! It's become my go to course when in SA. Challenging & always in good shape.

No. 10 & 8 are great views! bogeyed #8 but it felt like a par!

6/9 - Buffalo Creek in Rockwall just aerated their greens about a week ago I was told.

Sweetwater CC made it through the rains pretty well. Bunkers have been refilled with sand and the greens and fairways are recovering from the annual aeration process. Both courses should be fully healed within a week or week and half.

Played at River Plantation CC just north of The Woodlands twice this week. They've got 18 of their 27 holes open. It's so lush, and the greens are rolling really nice.

Today I played Houston National for first time in a while. Greens were sandy but rolled true. Course was in pretty good shape overall. Shot 78.

Woodforest today. Best course conditions Ive played in the Houston area in a while. Greens are awesome...I had not been there in several years, the new club house is really nice. I am not sure that I love the layout, but its a top 5 public course in Houston area IMO...I was impressed.

Played a quick 9 holes at Cedar Creek in San Antonio yesterday and the course is in great condition.

 

Greens are fast and true, just wish people would learn how to walk on them without dragging their feet.
