Houston Private Clubs - Young Exec.

I'm 30 living in the Heights. I play every weekend. It's been nice being able to play many courses around the area but the price of golf has gone up ($60 seems to be the norm for early weekend tee times).

For not much more a month, I could join a private club (lower tier obviously). I'm inquiring at Kingwood CC. From what I remember a couple of years ago, they were waiving initiation and dues were about $250 a month. I like this idea because 59 is great and Kingwood offers 4 courses plus privileges at other private clubs in Houston.

Anybody have any other recommendations or know of any deals in the current market?

I was a member at Riverbend in sugarland (probably wrong side of town for you) for about 4 years and really enjoyed it. For me, Jr. Exec membership was like $500 initiation and roughly $300 per month. I've played a lot of golf at Kingwood CC and think it's a great deal. I never thought the courses in Kingwood were in as good of shape as Riverbend but you get a lot of variety. The Forest course is my favorite of the four, it's awesome. Also I think you can pay a little more $$ and get access to Deerwood which is supposed to be fantastic although I've never played there. Another place on the north side of town which isn't crazy expensive as a jr. Is Champions. I think it's like 3k initiation.

Lochinvar is ultra exclusive though, if you are living in the heights probably Kingwood CC might be a good fit, I know they are running a $299 all inclusive for one year and $349/year until you are 40 and get access to about 8-10 different courses in town. I guess the closest in town course near the heights would be River Oaks, Houston CC which I am sure there is a wait list. Closer to the southwest end of town if you don't mind a short 20-25 minute drive is Braeburn and Riverbend which I am a member of.

I was a young exec member at KCC before having to relocate for a few years for work. I will be joining KCC when I move back. In my opinion it's the best deal in golf in Houston (maybe even in the state). You can show up in a Saturday or Sunday without a tee time and get on one of the 4 courses. When I was a member I think for 100 more a month you could add Deerwood also for a 5th course.

I spoke to a rep. For young executives, they're offering $500 down and $300/month for the first year (goes up to $350 per month after that) for unlimited golf, no restrictions (at the 4 Kingwood courses), inclusive of carts and privileges at the other ClubCorp courses (only after 10:00 a.m. on the weekends). Guests pay a $70-$90 fee + cart fee depending on course. The membership also includes some other health facilities in Houston (non-golf).

I think they're hurting for members. It sounded like they had quite a few openings (I won't give the number but it seemed substantial to me). I bet they'd waive initiation if I pushed them.

I have a co-worker who is a member at Braeburn. Sketchy area of town but once you get in there it is really nice. I wouldn't want to be stuck playing the same course over and over again though and I'm sure it isn't cheap.

BraeBurn is like $5K initiation plus $375 per month plus an $80 assessment fee per month for the Jr Membership. I think there is a wait list for the Jr Membership right now, not sure how long...

You definitely need a course with more than one track to play. 27 holes would be my minimum, but at least 36 would be ideal. I agree from an earlier post, Kingwood probably is your best option based on where you live. There's also Sugar Creek and Sweetwater in Sugar Land.

27 is ideal, but I would take Riverbend over Sugar Creek and Sweetwater. Braeburn is a great course too, I think last I heard their junior wait list is until the summer time.

Third nine at Sugar Creek SHOULD be wrapped up late August or October. The budget is roughly double of the previous reno's on the Trent and Jones nines. Really looking forward to the changes and to see how the combos shape up once complete. Going to have three fantastic nines by the end of the year. The two renovated nines resulted in the highest scoring average in the city during the city am qualifiers.

We've got about 5 - 6 young guys now who live in the Heights area, closer to 45 and they estimate their drive time to be right at 25 mins on a Saturday morning. I'm in the east part of Midtown and can make it down there in just under 20 mins on the weekend. My office is also 1/2 a mile from the clubhouse so that was a big selling point for me. Not sure if you have kids or not but they started a kids/family program at the start of the year and its been absolutely bonkers how quickly its caught on. There were over 30 kids in attendance last Friday.
