Ever do a fitting and walk away going....REALLY???

So with the season coming on quickly (snow finally leaving) I decided I wanted to get fit for new irons this year, plus maybe Driver. Today was that day. Bit of back ground on me, Currently play 714 AP2's with S300's. Driver is a Bio Cell Pro Red Tie X flex Play to 4 hcdp...should be better /sad.

 

All week I keep telling myself..."Go in and be open minded... don't fight what works and feels right".

*That being said and totally honest I was pretty set on walking out with Mizzy Mp25/Mp5 / Srixon 745 / or 716 AP2's again.

 

Then the fun began....

 

Irons:

Right away I pointed out I never feeling the shaft was right for me, after 30-45 mins of hitting balls testing shafts we narrowed down what shaft seemed to give the best feel, control , distance. *Note that is the order of my requirements.

 

I was really wanting to get into a lighter shaft honestly, but in the end the KBS Tour S - HS+1 ended up being the shaft, so much for a lighter shaft LOL.

 

Every time it gave me the best overall numbers by FAR with all irons. Distance it was the longest / tied with Modus 3, the Modus was not as accurate (??) which I thought was odd as the 1150 tour in X was stupid accurate but way to much spin.

 

On to the club head testing.... 45 mins later the 745's / MP25 was leading which was good as I like the looks / feel of both and we all know the mental aspect is huge in golf.

 

While spaking the little white ball down the range, the fitter goes off and gets two more heads. PSI Tour and APEX Pro 16. Really....?? Okay whatever. The PSI was "Mhheeee" for me. Not knocking TM but I have never found a TM that works for me.

 

Next up Apex Pro 16.....WTF.... with the KBS Tour it was less then 5 yards of dispersion (best) and 5+ yards longer then all other clubs using the same shaft. Instantly I figured it was the "jacked up" lofts Callaway is known for, the fitter promptly pointed out they are the same lofts as my current irons, and all the others brands I hit today.

 

Honestly looking down on them they like the older X forged iron series which I liked. Not a true Mizzy forged feel but but damn good feeling.

 

Needless to say I never had the thought of Callaway....they should be here in a week or so. :haha:

 

Driver:

Right up front I told them I was not looking to replace my driver. Since they did not have anyone coming for 45 mins, I said fine "lets mess around".

 

I had my BCP with me. I tried the Ping G LS Tec / M1 430/460 / D3 and D4 / XR / Etc. We were shooting for 1900-2100 spin with a Launch in the 11-12 degree range. (Swing Speed averaging around 107/109 today so was swinging pretty solid for me with the driver today..../cough cough..not typical hahaha)

 

After testing the BCP was still punting everything from getting the bag. Some were more accurate but loosing to many yards.

 

So I am about to go home happy (saving cash.......) and then it happens, the fitter comes over with a Vapor Fly Pro....yes NIKE. Says "Try this..." My response, "You want me to try what....I am sooo sorry I am married, I cant do that" :)

 

Nike has NOT even been on a list for me, honestly I can not recall the last time I ever thought about a Nike Driver, or any nike club for that matter. Nothing to do with the performance noted by alot of WRX'ers but WAY to much flash for me.

 

I have to admit, the Fly Pro was a complete surprise. I love the shape, smaller head. Blue color look is okay (BCP is black), though I could do without the Nike swoosh on the head.

 

Feel wise it is like a soft hammer which I prefer, its not loud like crap ton of drivers on the market, another of my requirements.

 

*By the way...WHAT is it with all the new drivers being SOOO DAMN LOUD??? The G and 915 D3 drivers are so loud. The M1 and D4 not so bad.

 

After testing a bunch of shafts, Diamana Blue S+ in X flex felt the best, also gave excellent numbers. Messed around with 8.5-10.5 range, we stopped at 9.5 as it keep the spin numbers low enough but the launch was a bit higher. (We figure it is the shaft...?)

 

Right now on trackman it was as long or longer then my BCP by 10+ yards...! Also as accurate. I do have a problem of staying back to long and getting to much positive AOA. Right now we question if we should tip the shaft or not?

 

Still not sold on buying it, they let me take it to test for a few weeks, I did place a deposit on the club of course. Have to play it in the real world to know but testing is looking pretty positive.

 

So moral of the story I guess keep an open mind...?? I spent the next 30 min drive home going "Really....Callaway and Nike....Really"

I completely agree. I ended up with PXG 0311T irons, TM M1 driver, Ping G 3-wood and hybrid.

The opposite happened to me. I went thinking MP5 and tried many heads. MP5 all the way, both in distance and accuracy. Had not come with the funds yet, but I'm set on playing them this summer. They were the only ones that could beat my Nike Vapor Pro.
