Trip to Masters, golf course in Lexington along the way

I'm travelling down with a friend to the Tuesday practice round of the masters, and have decided to drive from Detroit. I figured we drive to around Lexington, KY , and break up the drive with a round of golf.

Any suggestions in area?

Kearney Hill Golf Links at intersection of I-75 and I-64 just north of Lexington. I played that course a few years ago and enjoyed it. Very easy to get to and close to freeway.

Anything in particular you are looking for in a course? If not, the usual recommendations will be good for you.

Kearney Hill is a Pete Dye that used to host a senior tour event. It is a links style course that is now owned by the city of Lexington. Usually very good condition except for sometimes the bunkers are questionable. Bent from tee to green.

Cherry Blossom in Georgetown a Clyde Johnston design is always in great shape and used to host a Hooters Tour event. It is often voted highly in "best of" lists. Good chance to score well there and has one of the toughest three hole finishes you will see in KY. Bent tee to green.

Houston Oaks in Paris is often talked about as a great deal in great condition. I think the design is decent but haven't played it in years since I moved to Louisville.

Gibson Bay in Richmond is one of the best bang for the buck around. It's a mike Hurdzan design and is always in very good shape and can get tough if the wind is up. It is owned by the city of Richmond. Lots of state events get held here.

The Bull between Lex and Richmond is a really fun course. It is one of the few David Pfaff courses I like. I think it has a different name and owners now. It was one of my favorite courses to play when I lived in the area but haven't been there in some time.

Someone will follow up and say to go to Old Silo but don't. It's conditions are questionable now and have been for several years. It was certainly a fun course, so if conditions don't matter to you then go, but they have had struggles for quite some time. It was Graham Marsh first US design, if that matters.

In Lexington I would definitely say Kearney Hills. Really easy to get to from I-75.

Kerney is a good course as mentioned I also like picadome downtown. Short but fun course.

I play Picadome probably 2 or 3 times a week. But it takes until about May for the course to get into good shape in my opinion. I would say Kearney would be a much better option for their needs.

If you have time to venture away from I-75 a bit I would HIGHLY recommend Old Silo in Mount Sterling. Imo it is the best public course in the state.
