Oddly enough Daiwa used to be pretty popular about 1990 give or take. I never have had any. Couldn’t afford em then cuz we’re pretty high end. Kinda early days of graphite shafted everything, some multi material/composite tech if I remember right. Bet they were popular with senior and ladies golfers. Think I just heard Tiger even played Daiwa irons at some point early on. Who knows probably a hand me down 80’s set from his pops.

Wonder at what age people started lining up to give him clubs???

That's a nice putter.  Daiwa was a great brand in that era... including persimmons and blades before they became one of the first companies to incorporate graphite shafts into a lot of their iron sets.  David Graham designed several of the iron sets for them. He was known as a golf club tinkerer and many other pros would have him work on their clubs before there were tour vans following them around.

Tiger played the DG273 (named after Graham's winning score in the 1981 US Open) throughout his amateur career.  And Ian Baker-Finch won the 1991 Open Championship with them too.  Every iron that Tiger has played since then has had a similar look to those Daiwa's at address.  The DG201 is also a really good looking blade as well.  https://golf.com/gear/irons/tiger-woods-old-blade-irons-daiwa/

I think I know why...

... It's missing one of the tungsten sole weights. I imagine it feels really light?

The heel-side weight, right? With the other sole weight remaining on the toe, that would make it easy to slice off right for sure.

But a few years ago I had one of those i25 drivers for a couple of months, and although it was definitely intact, I pretty much got the same results with it as @bogieboy😂

Wonder if it possibly could be a (PING era design consequence)? In my modern I switched out of my PING G driver this year. The G is 2 models newer than I25 I think.?. Can tell you it was a massive adjustment going to that G 4 years ago. Light headed and vague feeling at first so hard to know where the head was. Not like I know where it is all the time anyways. Yeah at first it was a right side of the course machine! I switched from a Titleist 910 D to it back then. Mine had the off the shelf Alta 55 gram stiff shaft. G was very forgiving and unique soft impact feel compared to many other moderns. Tough getting it under 3000 rpm’s spin is the main reason I swapped out. The 400 that came right after the G is supposed to be as good a driver as today’s. Certain models still sell for a shocking amount.

Don't know if it had anything to do with the design philosophy of PING at the time. What I do know is that I really liked the look of the i25 at address and wanted it to work for me, but it didn't.

The regular G400 with stock Tour Stiff is in my modern bag. Been in since it came out in, I think, 2018, so six years now. That is probably a crime of some sort on the main WRX board😜

G400 LST was what I was hoping to find to replace but they still sell for close to $300 in nice condition. It was very hard finding one. Maybe people that have em don’t want to give em up? They often come up as an alternative option when all the newest $599 drivers are discussed. I ended up with a 2021 Callaway Epic Max LS that was quite a bit less expensive than the 2018 PING.

Yup over on the main board I could be flirting with legal charges of some sort being real close to 4 years behind.

(Shhh don’t tell anyone but I wasn’t even fit to it……)

I don't see many come up for sale around me, either. A guy who used to work in my local secondhand golf shop once told me that PING users tend to hang on to their clubs longer, especially the woods.

And as we all know here, EYE2s are virtually indestructible. In fact, it's rumoured that top boffins are conducting research to find out if a set of EYE2s will be able to withstand the heat death of the universe.

Yeah, heel side weight is missing... i think it has more to do how the club feels than how its weighted, as my current driver is a 2016 big bertha fusion, playing an inch longer than standard, ust proforce 65 stiff shaft, AND an 8g weight in the heel instead of the stock 5g... dont know what that puts swing weight at, but i would be guessing somewhere high D or low E swingweight... you FEEL the head load the shaft... as for the ping, its standard length and would be suprised if its even D1 swingweight.... you just feel like youre swinging a stick... possibly just a ping thing, like @ezgoer was saying... very vague feel.... this is the first ping i have ever put behind a ball...pretty much been a callaway guy aside from a 2 game stint with a titelist 913j that i really wanted to work, felt great (probably the proforce 65 shaft that was in it)and when hit well went long, but just wasnt consistent, similar to the ping in that regard...

bottom line, this is why they make different drivers that feel different..  LOL

Daiwa were really popular in the UK in the 70s and 80s. They produced excellent persimmon woods, with graphite shafts, and quality irons at reasonable prices. The Trypower iron was a great game improvement iron with a Ping like finish, but 1/3 of the price.

Yes. The Trypowers were my first proper set of irons. Went from a near beginner to 12-handicap with them.

Daiwa is still known for high quality graphite shafts technology (mainly for fishing rods 🎣)

Played them today - I don’t have a ton of experience with other iron sets but I am familiar with Pings so I am going to use them as my basis for comparison. They feel soft to me, very close to Beni ISIs. The TR S graphite shafts aren’t too shabby for their age, little bit of whip to it in a waggle. My good shots felt right, high launching very similar ball flight to the Ping Eye 2 - can you believe it? I kinda wish I had hit a Ping Eye 2 in a graphite shaft as a basis for comparison - but not yet.  Again, little early to say but close to the same carry as my Ping Eye 2s. Did have some weird misses for me. (I hit them straight sometimes - it surprised me) I didn’t think they were great looking but they were nice behind the ball - form follows function. Going to have to take them out tomorrow to double check. IMG_2095.jpeg.d85a7ab97c2574218973cf1873f138dc.jpeg

Daiwa are one of the brands I have a major soft sport for. I used a Daiwa SW, with a flange the previous owner had ground to oblivion, for a good part of my junior days. I might have grabbed it out of a bag of cobwebbed clubs in the deep recesses of the pro-shop of my old home club when the shop staff bought me lunch for cleaning the members clubs, so they F#$% the dog.

And, of course, there was an expensive set of Daiwas - Hi-Tracs, If remember correctly, with graphite shafts that sat in that same shop for the length of my junior years - far too expensive for the penny-pinching membership.

Daiwa is one of my regular searches for vintage Japanese steel.

I have a couple sets of DG-8201s - Beautiful scotch blades that could double as razor-blades.

A set of Pro Special IIs very similar to the 8201, but it looks like they were only touched by the A grinding team. A special set I won't soon part with.

I also have some Advisor Limited Pro Whisker with really nice old graphite that look like they weren't used more than a couple times.

And, finally a set of the DG273 by David Graham in a sort of Nickel Chrome finish that I've never seen before or since. I sometimes wonder what the original sticker on those were. One of the 1980 - early 90s sets where money was no object.

I also have a persimmon 1W Advisor Pro with the sticker still on it... Needs a reshaft, if I could ever find something decent to put in it.

Believe it was designed by Scotty Cameron in the late 80’s when he worked with Ray Cook.

The logo's for Ray Cook clubs have changed at least 3 times, the first was the original Ray "PutterMan" Cook (just his name & San Antonio TX, also DBRC on clubs he designed for like Hogan) & after his death each logo changed representating the company that owned the rights to the name. The first company after Ray Cook died, was in California & was the company that Scotty Cameron worked for (I think)
Interestingly, I have both the "original" Ray Cook Blue Goose & the "Billy Barroo"..

And I gotta thank you for showing this - I need to go thru the original Ray Cook putter collection I have to cull the duplicates....so thaks

Wandered around in the a.m. rain and found these little delights.

Navy blue Miller bag in very good shape. No rain cover though.

Golden Ram 1 & 3 woods, driver and spoon. Burke Golden Scot 1 & 3 woods. TA 845 driver. Wilson Patty Berg 3i, which will add to some 5i/71i Wilson Pin Highs already owned. Same club head style. Power Bilt 60* scotch blade wedge. No name chrome blade putter. Similar to a Wilson I have but this one has a small muscle along the back.

I've taken an extra long weekend (M.I.L. was in town) and this presented me with the opportunity to cruise past an op shop where I've had a little bit of success in the past.

Came across 3 - 8 & PW of Spalding Bob Charles "PERSONAL" model. [No sign of the 9 iron]

Fitted with True Temper "PRO FIT" shafts and (what looks like the original grips).

$NZD 1 each ($USD 0.63 each)

Visually, they are reminiscent of the 1965 Top Flite irons that @cold_war_era_golfer had in the bag earlier this month (a post from 4 September).

Those are sweet! Don't give up on the missing iron, there's a chance it'll come around. Ask me about waiting something like a year and a half to finish a set of custom Spaldings...

till you find the missing 9 iron...why not check the loft progression to find the approx loft of the missing 9 iron & put in an iron of that degree of the missing 9 (it may not necessarily be a 9 iron, thanks to "loft creep").

A Top-Flite Professional 9i would probably fit perfectly, in fact they may be the same forging.

@EvanH Love it!

Had to look up Op Shop: Opportunity Shop. Appears to be mostly charitable organizations running them (Salvation Army, Red Cross, etc). Cool!
