is there a preferred product for easily removing the old lacquer from the sole plates?

For decades I used Formby's products, his Furniture Refinisher removed all the crackled varnish & smoothed out any remaining varnish (using 0000 steel wool). When he retired, he sold his company & formulas to MinWax...they sell a Furinture Refinisher (works just a well as the original, cuz it actually is). the other product that Formby sold was "Tung Oil", I've been using that in place of any kind of marine poly or oil based varnish for some, oh I'm not sure -over 50 years of woodworking, at least).

Good Luck, whatever you decide...oh almost forgot - when you pour the refinisher into a container & rinse that 0000 pad  in it, let the solution settle, that old crud will sink to the bottom & you can reuse the clear solution again

Great thanks! Yep Tung oil is great, I keep a small jar of it. Will have a look online and see what’s available here in NZ or that is similar to Formby/Winmax (if it’s not sold down under). Both woods are in good order other than the lacquer imperfections, so it would be fun putting some time into stripping and oiling them instead of a quick touch up. Will grab a couple of tired old laminate woods to practice on first if I go that route.

I did check NZ & a couple of places popped up on Google....not sure of exchange rate between NZ to USD.....I have a can of the Howard's that I purchased some time ago (a decade or two) when Formby's disappeared & then found out he'd retired & sold rights to MinWax. It's ok, but the Minwax® Antique Furniture Refinisher, IMO, is better.

I remember reading somewhere that Ralph Maltby recommended Minwax products for refinishing when The Golfworks stopped selling such products.  Maybe the products The Golfworks used to sell were re-labeled Minwax products.  In my experience The Golfworks oil modified poly was far superior to most OEM finishes.

not necessarily a big score, but I did find a partial set of Hogan Edge irons. 2,4,5,6,7,8,9.  Apex 4 shafts. pinned irons, so not sure of the age.

old Chamois grips might be useable but I never cared much for them.

this GW store always breaks up sets for the bin.

maybe a visit tomorrow will find the missing irons, but if not, it's all good.

these will clean up pretty good. moderate wear on the 7i, others are fine

the 2i is mounted on a gold colored graphite shaft, brand label pretty worn off.

all the irons have the previous owners name/labels attached.

at $4 each, I consider them a value.

ETA: the graphite shaft is a Lockie brand. first time I've seen one.

Paid more than i usually do for thift store finds today, but i feel it was worth it....

Found a talormade r510 Tour Preferred driver wearing a Fujikura speeder 757 x flex, a callaway Xforged 60° and a mack daddy 2 56° (worked out well... havent gotten along with my warrior 60 since new, and have tried others that have worked quite well for me, hoping thats the case here, and replacing a whooped mizuno 56° as well) for a grand total of $40...

Those ‘old’ Taylormade drivers are rock solid! Owned a 910D, followed by a GBB Epic when it was released, but sold them both as I still feel more confident with my TM R5 dual 9.5 deg (which cost me all of $30 secondhand years ago and is still in my bag). Surprised I got sick of the GBB within a few months, as I was in the fitting bay for ages with trackman trying find the best shaft and assumed it was dialed, so I’m not sure any of the newer drivers would have greatly changed that.

On a whim I checked out the thrift store at lunchtime. Found a FG17 PW to complete a Wilson set. Grabbed this little stand bag to store a set of Ram irons. Super clean and shows no wear. If the big zipper wasnt busted I could use it on course.

If the zipper pocket just won’t close the zipper mechanism itself is just loose and can be tightened with a pliers. In these low quality bags I’ve had luck with this. Google zipper maintenance and it’ll be explained. Lip balm for zipper lubricant also. Heck even Sun Mountain bags I’ve been able to fix pockets that weren’t zipping shut. The zipper would just move back and forth and never close the teeth if the mechanism is too loose. If there’s missing teeth or a torn/loose stitch seam your not in luck.

the zipper head seems to be a really soft metal that just doesn't grip both sides of the zipper teeth. .  I toyed with it for a bit but even when it gripped both sides the zipper wouldn't close. I looked on the Zon and a decent replacement head is just under $15. They appear to be made exactly for this purpose. called FixnZip.   We'll see.

@ezgoer,

ETA: I used to keep an extra tube of Chapstick for a bag that had tough zippers. It worked just fine. Even a small piece of wax from a candle will help in certain situations.

Thx for the tips.

No problem. Google how to tighten a zipper slider. I don’t want to describe it wrong. I bet there’s a shot and the zipper opening that the teeth go through is too loose cuz of the soft metal you’re describing. Good luck.

Actually, I've been assembling that set for a few years. found the matching PW today.

all of them came from thrifts.

FWIW, I was at the local Play It Again over the weekend. some of their club prices are kind of nuts, but then again, they have a store to support.

Ah, gotcha. I like the idea of a full set made up of thrift-shop finds.

What about the shafts flexes and shafts lengths? Do they match?

all are the same R flex.  the PW is actually an inch long - relatively.  all the rest fall into a nice progression.

That's good going, and the PW could be easily cut down to match, if you so wanted.

Or extend the others to your preferred specs. Either way, it's a full set of FG-17s, one of my favourite irons!

If you might know - how much can the heads be bent?

Every decent playing set I have are now 3* up.

I have several sets of cast irons that I don't think could absorb that much adjustment, so I haven't risked it.

I bent my Wilson FG-J8s (FG-17 for the Japanese market) two degrees upright with ease. I also bought an FG-17 2i that was very flat. I think I bent it at least 3 degrees upright.

The most I have done was about 4.5 degrees, and that was with a couple of Mizuno long irons that were really flat.

Just be careful doing it.

The win for the day was a MacGregor (I think) Jack Nicklaus "White Fang" Bullseye style putter (36 inches).

[My first Bullseye]

And a small bonus was a Golden Ram Tour Grind Axial 4i.

The are both a rough around the edges, but with good grips (there's a very playable Lamkin grip on the putter).

A brillo pad should clean up those shafts and the Ram iron nicely.  Touch up with chrome polish after that.  Good find.

I'd like to try one of these and a 9 is ideal loft for me. With a Hogan 4 for $5.  I'll have it bent up in the spring

Greeting from a first time poster, long time lurker!

I had a ‘free day’ from work and honey-do’s, so I went out a’thriftin to see what was new in my area (Upstate SC).

I ended up with a set of Ram Fastback blades (2-9), a Ben Hogan Producer PW, a set of Palmer ‘The Standard’ blades (4-9), a King Snake driver & 3 wood (for $4 each, I’ll give ‘em a try), a pencil stand bag, a Maxfli stand bag, and a W/S bag.
T’was a guuuuuud day!

Nice haul, bet SC is a great area for the clubs we like the most or is it? Maybe your competing with more people that actually care about the way it was? When you get the chance pic’s of the Palmers please. Quite a few different iterations. I’ve gotten too many sets already but there is a mid to late 80’s Palmer Originals set I think are as beautiful as any iron ever made. I’m always looking for that set and will make room. Think there’s a Standard that’s similar to those..

Brother E, I see you are once again displaying your level of good taste.  😁

There were three versions of the Palmer Standard blades.  The Original Standards you mention were from 87-91 or 92, these had Palmer's signature stamped on the muscle.  The 85 Standards were a flat back, and slightly larger.  And, the "Standard that's similar to those" model, the 1978-1984 Palmer Standards.

The main difference between the 78 Standards and the Original Standards was the 78s were slightly rounded on the back, at the edges of the clubhead.  The Original Standards seemed a bit more squared off.  If you look at the back of the clubheads of each in pics, you can see that slight difference.

Other than that, nothing.  I've owned all three sets of Standard blades, they're all quite lovely.  Interestingly, in a departure from other OEM blades, all three were parallel shafted.  It was said they were also frequency matched at the factory, but it's not something I've heard verified.  I know all of my sets were perfectly swingweighted, I never had to lead tape any of them.

Hosels were also pinned, FWIW.

My 78 set were 1-PW.  Kind of wish I still had them.  Oh well.

Lofts of the Original Standards were an 18° 1 iron, with 3° gaps to a 27° 4 iron, and 4° gaps from there to the 51° PW.  I can only assume the earlier sets were similarly lofted.

I also found them to be the most forgiving blades I've played, with the possible exception of my current Maltby TS4's.

edit to add:  fun fact about the Orignal Standards.  When I had my set, the Titleist 681's had come out.  Local golf course (Elk River CC) had a set in the pro shop.  The then head pro and I had a laugh; the 681s were nearly identical to my Palmer Standards.
