Thrift Store Jackpot

Recommended Posts

I had heard tell of one of these, but, never seen one, so, I was beginning to think they were like that mythical Unicorn, until, I waltzed in to a local Goodwill this afternoon. Shamrock flange blade putter. Also, picked up a decent Sun Mountain bag with 2 Ping dual color balls inside.

Sold one years back. Mistake.

So I went to the Thrift I visit in West Palm Beach yesterday. Hadn't been for a while and the last couple times they didn't have any clubs I wanted. I went looking for a nice bag or 2. Struck out on the bags but did pick up these for $2/club...

Now understand that I spent about 3 hours working on these but they were in incredible condition. The iron face picture is the 9 iron! The 5 iron was the worst but it wasn't really too much worse than that. First time I've ever seen an Equalizer that wasn't beat to …. They were in 3 different crappy bags and 2 different bins. I am sure that the Hubby Habjam 2 iron and SW went with them as they were all gripped the same and the lengths were matched to the Hogans. Spalding TPM 2 putter with an older style fat grip in good condition. Legend 3 shafts are Regular flex, correct? I'm hoping I can make some $$$ on these here locally.

All Forged, all the time.
The Sets that see regular playing time...
67 Spalding Top-Flite Professional, Cleveland Classic Persimmon Driver, 3 & 4 Spalding Top-Flite Persimmon Woods, TPM Putter.
71 Wilson Staff Button Backs, Wilson System 3000 Persimmon Driver, 3 & 5 Woods, Wilson Sam Snead Pay-Off Putter.
95 Snake Eyes S&W Forged, Snake Eyes 600T Driver, Viper MS 18* & 21* Woods, 252 & 258 Vokeys, Golfsmith Zero Friction Putter.

That set may well have originated in Northern Illinois. Hubby Habjan was the head professional at Onwentsia CC in Lake Forest for many years. He sold his private label of clubs out of the pro shop. Your thought that the set was fit for one player is likely correct.

Great find.

Quite possible it was one of Hubby Habjans sets.

Hubby Habjan was also a golf club designer for Faultless, and was mentioned by name in a few of their club ads in the '70s.

Played tournament golf with his son, Chris Habjan, in Miami FL many moons ago.

This set looks like it had some remains of some lead tape on a few irons.

PS- Ben Hogan left this world July 25, 1997- 21 years ago..

I’m with you on this Stu. If he did work on those split soles, that was before he was DON WHITE.

Whomever ran with this set was a player for sure. Nice!

I wonder about that ^^^.

Do you think owning pro equipment meant you were a "player" or just that you had $$$? I mean the options for game improvement irons were slim Pickens back then. Guy could've been a hack. Now, if there were strike patterns or wear spots, then we'd have some proof.

Good point. There isn't enough wear on these to say.

Believe me, over the years I've seen club wear indicating both 'Player' and 'Hack.'

Wear spots aren't a great indicator either, IMO. I've hardly ever seen a wear spot that didn't start out on the sweet spot, and if the clubs are played long enough, I've never seen a wear spot that didn't spread out to the heel and toe. When I see that "perfect" dime-sized spot, I believe I'm looking at how much they were hit rather than how well they were hit. Look up the pictures of Arnie's Dynapowers that were auctioned off to see why.

Yep the Florida guys are like us as in finding clubs from all over. Mostly because we both live in retirement areas. Sometimes when looking through the piles at work there will be address labels from everywhere on clubs. About 3 years ago I found 3 sets of Izett woods in a bin along with several Wilson wedges and a Penna driver. Two of the sets of Izetts had address labels on them. Same guy's name one Address in York PA and the other address in Harrisburg PA. One of the Wilson wedges had his name and a Hershey PA address. Guy must have been a hustler and moved around a lot :taunt: . Did the research on one address label on another club one time and found out the guy was deceased. It sorta saddened me and I never researched it again

There is also one more thing to consider too--- Some players are definitely ball strikers and then there are some players that hit it all over the face sometimes with a purpose. I fall into that last category I never considered myself a ball striker. The other day I flushed a 8 iron dead center and I told Bear I am quitting now on the 2nd hole because I actually hit one in the face.

Your question was answered a few years ago-

"Yes. The VIP iron models were my first assignment with MacGregor. That included the Split/Level soles." -Don White

So if these irons are 1971 MacGregor VIP Limited with Split Level soles, there is a very good chance Don White ground them.

Yes, this is a photo of Don White grinding someones iron in 2012.

Please oh please do not tell me that is true------ The one set of Macgregor clubs I truly hate---- I guess I stuck my foot in my mouth on the previous reply--- I can not believe for the life of me Don White ground something that ugly-- They look ugly at address to me too

I'm with you on this Stu. If he did work on those split soles, that was before he was DON WHITE.

STU/Shirly-

Remember it was the MacGregor Master grinders (Art Emerson, John Huggans?) who ground those very first sets of Split/Level Sole irons. If memory serves me, MacGregor used Tom Weiskopf in their first ads for the Split/Levels

Don told me it was the best education anyone grinding club heads could ask for- "All those styles and cuts..."

Note- There are MacGregor VIP Limited model irons from these years with regular soles as well.

Sorry I cannot vouch for the model, as the VIP Limited irons were so RH Only it didn't matter whether they had Split Level soles or not.

Have seen very few LH sets of MacGregor MT irons with Split Level soles, and there are some around, but....

..am thankful for what I've got.

Those Muirfields look a bit different to my RH ones, at least in the short irons. In a good way, but taller and squarer - they look great. Were they special order? Have you compared them to a RH set in the flesh?

Shirly-

To my knowledge, they were not Special Order (and as one who looks very closely, there's an iron missing..)

Yes, the MacGregor RH JNs have a more consistently uniform muscleback throughout the set, with the shorter irons having the most muscle.

Am not sure how many LH JNs were made by MacGregor-

Perhaps we'll ask Patrick Boyd and Don White to fill in the missing one.

Yes those are all good points but where's the fun in that? :-) As I play along with old clubs I'd rather imagine that a great golfer once used them to remove vast quantities of cash from hackers wallets. Maybe even Ben Hogan himself! After all, nobody really knows. All in fun boys, all in fun.

Being as I was off today, on a whim the wifey and I stopped by the local GW to poke around and see if there was anything worth getting. They had several bags of clubs, and a barrel of individual irons, and they were either clones/knockoffs or (ironically) they must have had 3 complete sets of 70s-era Northwestern irons and woods with the finish completely worn off them.

Needless to say we walked out of there empty handed.

I sure would luv to stumble across a set of Wilson irons (with the weight port) from back in my high school days like I had (the ex made off with my originals), but somehow I don't see it happening.
