Srixon Z545: Long Term Reviews?

RobDMB

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am a 15 handicap looking for a new set of irons. I've been playing Callaway X-14 Pro irons for years. Wondering how the Srixon Z545 irons are holding up against new offerings such as Ping IE1, Callaway Apex CF16, etc. Although a higher handicap I prefer a club that isnt too bulky and without too much offset.

Finally, how does Srixon handle shaft upgrades? Do they offer no charge upgrades like some companies or is there a charge for any non-stock shaft. Thanks.

I have played Srixon 545 for a year. Graphite Design Ad graphite shafts. They have dethroned the following for a spot in the bag. Taylormade RSI 2's, Nike Vapor, Callaway Apex CF 16's, Callaway Apex 14's, Very long, forgiving, turf interacton - good. The forging is soft, very easy to bend, checking loft & lies. I would have two recommendations if you go this route, 1. The 545 AW is very chunky, I play the 745 AW.

2. Purchase some heads and have them shafted exactly the way you would like them.

The decals in the cavity like to come off, aside from this they are exceptional. I am currently building a set of Cobra King Forged Tech with Fujikura Speeder Pro shafts, interested to see how they compare.

Let me know if I can help.

I got a set about six weeks ago, I went with them because they produced high ball speed and had a good impact feel (given the high ball speed). Naturally trying and owning tend to be different experiences and I have to say I have been disappointed with the on course performance of my delivered build. Ironically, I picked the Srixon over the Apex CF16 because of better consistency.

My specs required the irons weakened 2 degrees so I am not sure if this has interfered with the V Sole (or if the V Sole simply doesn't suit my shallow AoA) but I am struggling for consistency with the Z545's.

I intend to tweak the lofts and double check the lie angles before some final testing, before settling on my set for the season.

Just for information my Z545's are custom built by a local club builder with Aerotech Steelfiber i70 A flex shafts (6-AW). My old set are Yonex EZone comp with Aerotech Steelfiber i80 R shafts.

Here in the UK the Z545 is available with a modest selection of steel shafts with no up charge, there are also a few custom shops providing access to a wider range of shafts, at a cost, naturally.

I've been playing them since last summer-ish. They feel great off the face. When I'm striking it well they produce really good distance. When I'm not striking it well I feel I do pay for it a bit closer to a players iron than I would a highly regarded GI iron like an AP1 or similar.

The SW on them is D3. They have a nice cavity back, and a fair amount of real estate across the face (very similar in size to the JPX-850 forged), but the offset is very minimal for a GI iron. There are "players" irons that have more across the set. I came from 714 AP1's and I find I have to time my release very well with the longer irons or I get a weak fade. I really don't like the feeling of having to release so deliberately, so I think I miss the extra offset that comes in most GI sets.

Having played them now for over 6 months I'm considering a move back to a D1 or D2 and a bit more offset again.

The offset and the SW are nit picking though. All in all they are a lovely set, and perform very well.

for non-stock steel AND additional grip options SRiXON has ZERO upcharges. :good:

Just curious, but what handicap range would everyone say the Z545 is ideal for versus the Z745? Thanks.

Impossible to answer. I know people want to fit themselves into a club based on handicap because it seems easy and black & white but it just cant be done. A handicap is based on the entire game and not just ball striking with your irons.

I'll beat the dead horse... Got to hit them both. If you're unsure and cant hit them both, then go with the more forgiving of the two and get the z545.

I have a set with DG Pro s300s in them and I really liked them last year. I hit them very high though. Was hard to keep them down. I switched to the Callaway Apex CF16 for two reasons mainly, thinner sole (mental thing) and I can flight the CF16 much easier. Controlling ball flight is something I need to do to hit more greens.

I'll try:

745 is probably for 10 and under. 545 could be anyone, but has lower offset than other GI crossovers, so if you fade or slice, you probably won't like them as much if you're looking for help.

Of course, how YOU hit irons is the most important factor, but that's an idea.

I have had mine since they came out. I have the DGs300 shafts in mine. They are a D3 swingweight which i love. I was coming from Ping G25's at D0 that i couldn't hit very well plus the pings were alot shorter hitters for me.

the 545's are excellent irons. i have played over 70 rounds with mine and they still look great. I do use headcovers when traveling but not on the course. I play at a 14 hdcp and they are great forgiving irons that are very consistent. i have found that i hit the ball the proper distances on most strikes when i do my part so they are predictable and i just love that. The v sole also is unlike most irons. Turf interaction is great. I also play XR's quite frequently but the 545's are a notch above even thou the XR's may be a tad longer.

The only thing i didn't care for was the aggressive grips they put on these irons in stock form. Many love them but they are aggressive and can easily be changed. They work as intended but i prefer a softer grip. The stock ones are like sandpaper. (UTx)

you can't go wrong with them however, very solid irons that get rave reviews. I have not considered replacing them in 2 years now and i like to buy lots of clubs.

Necro bump. Came across this thread when I was googling the lofts of my irons because I forgot them. lol.

Still bagging these. I have a set of 5-sw Japan release black Z545s. I haven’t found anything better. Trust me I’ve tried. I spent years tinkering and trying new clubs. Wasted so much money over the years. The past 5 years I haven’t changed much. Putter is a Scotty studio design from 2002, sim driver and woods are 5 years old now, and I just realized my irons are over a decade old lol. I still even playing a tm Bigfoot wedge from about 4 years ago. But that needs replacing soon.

I even bought a backup set of these 3 years ago I’m about to switch to because my groves are starting to wear out.

Anybody else still have these? Or am I just a dinosaur. (Handicap had been anywhere from a 3.4-9.0 over the past decade depending on how much I can play)
