You should play both Fazio courses at Barton Creek. If you stay at the resort you can get on the courses. Both are better layouts than Austin Country Club (but not in nearly as good condition).

Also, check out Wolfdancer - about 30 miles east of Austin.

When is your trip?

arriving next Thursday 14th at lunch time... so first golf will be the next day Friday but in Houston... thinking austin Tuesday/Wednesday or Wednesday/Thursday depending on when we need a day off...

lived in Austin 6 month to play rugby so got a few friends to see there in the evening...

there seems to be no way on Austin CC unless you know a member...

Looked into Golf Club of Houston and price seems decent for what it is...

you can also look into playing Onion Creek, its a CC, but I think you can get in. Also, for BBQ try Valentina's in SW Austin, yummy, Franklin's is so overrated and not worth the wait, IMHO

My Houston recommendations if you spend that much time here:

(1) Golf club of Houston - should be in awesome shape with the Shell there last weekend (2) High Meadow Ranch (3) Woodforest (4) Cypresswood Tradition (5) Memorial Park for the cheap / easy day

I'd probably ditch a couple days in Houston and play some tracks in San Antonio such as La Cantera and the JW Oaks. Also recommend the Fazio tracks at Barton Creek in Austin and Woldancer in Bastrop.

I suggest playing River Ridge in Sealy. It is about an hour west of Houston right off I-10. You could play it on your way in/out of Houston. 27 Holes, and out in the country by the Brazos River....I played out there yesterday and the course was in great shape. Pace of play is always excellent as well. It is one of the best deals around IMO and I have played a lot of the quality courses in the Houston/S.A./Austin triangle.

Thanks for the memorial park - not far from where I am staying... Will play there the Sunday...

Keep options coming... Going to try book some up on Sunday night whilst watching the masters...

IMO,

I would skip memorial park. It's popular cause it's centrally located in houston and conditions are always decent but as a track, not really anything special. All the good course are out in suburbs of houston. Since your coming from out of the country', I would venture out in the suburbs to play the really good tracks. As mentioned before, here's the list I would do. No particular order.

Black horse

High meadow ranch

Cypresswood tradition

Woodforest

River ridge

Cypress lakes

Eagle point (cheapest one but a great course)

And if the condition is anywhere still like the sho, then golf club of houston. However, most of the year, they let the course get pretty rough.

This is a good line up. As far as Memorial Park, they offer premium tee times where you can book a tee time in advance for an extra $10-15...the number of slots is limited so look into it asap.

I highly recommend High Meadow Ranch, it's in far north Houston (Magnolia) and probably my favorite public track outside of Golf Club of Houston. Close by is Woodforest at Fish Creek which many say has he best greens around. Both are a bit of a trek, ~45 min to an hour from downtown I'd guess. This would be an awesome 36 hole day if you got it in you.

Tour 18 might also be fun (close to Golf Club of Houston). It is a course full of a bunch of replica holes on tour such as Augusta National, Doral, Sawgrass, Harbour Town, etc...no idea what conditions are like right now though...sometimes good sometimes mediocre.

You may want to consider doing Memorial on monday, where there's a very good chance you can walk-up and get on within an hour, and play somewhere else on sunday - like high meadow ranch or wood forest.

Played wolfdancer on Friday for the first time and it is a fun course -- good layout. Bunkers and trees well positioned. Conditions were above average and greens were quite fast. Course was a bit dry so the ball rolls...

As for Golf club of houston, i think if you get a little later tee time - maybe even just after 11am - you can go without a caddie.

In Houston, try Blackhorse South course and Cypresswood Tradition course. Golf club of Houston is a pretty good deal to play a PGA course and get a fore caddie.
