Your recommendations/suggestions

I have 4-pw in Z545 with F4 Recoil 95. As built, pw 36.25" and D6, 9-4i are .5" incremented lengths and all are d4. All lofts are to spec except the pw is weakened to 45*

 

My situation today is that the 7-pw are fine, feel and performance wise for a 13 hdcp. The 4-5-6i doesn't feel right. They feel dead like they are too stiff. They are left versus the other irons. Carry length Pw- 125, 7 165. However the 6i is 170, 5i 178 and 4i 185

 

My idea is to ss x1 the 4-5-6 and and doing .3/8" increments to control/lower the sw of these. Buy a new 3i shaft and install away, leaving the pw-7 exactly the same.

 

What nightmare could I be building and what might be a better way.

Maybe my questions are not evident. Is there a potential issue by SSx1 a portion of an iron set and will doing 3/8" actually help in lowering swingweight? Or is there another alternative?

May be the flex but it also could be the heavier swing weight is the real issue in the longer clubs (due to the over length build). Too heavy could result in slower swing speeds and the impression that the shafts are too stiff because you just can not get an effective swing going. If that's the case, going to 3/8" length increments (for the full set, not just the 6-4) may help a little (as would finding some way to remove some head weight - but that's not an easy task). But difficult to really be sure without going through the process.

 

As a test, I might try choking up on the 5 (or 4) iron and see if that helps at all. Try 1/2" then try a full 1" and see what happens to both the flight and the feel.

D4 with a lightweight shaft like you have is a good number and shouldn't be causing problems. What clubs/shafts did you play previously and what length progression did they have?

 

Going off a 36.25" PW your set is something like + 3/4" long. Are you sure this is a correct match for you physically?

 

Soft stepping one time is just a very small change. I doubt that will fix anything.

 

I suspect the reason for the short distance with your long irons relates to your inability to catch the ball cleanly. You might want to experiment by shortening your long irons to 3/8" length increments and see if that helps. You can always soft step them later.

I am thinking you are not fitted, so, go see a club fitter, I am sure something is off from your description, and when we feel something is not right, we will not hit the shat we want because we don't have the confidence in the club...if you like the clubs and not planning on getting rid of them, I would go and get fitted...but as Stuart recommended, try chocking on your clubs to see it that does the trick or at least helps out a bit...

Thanks all. I was fitted for +1/2" a number years ago, small back issue. My AP2 were the prior set and +1/2 , worked ok. The F4 version has great dispersion and distance pw-7. I will try the choke down and have already discussed "shorter" with fitter on the 4-6. Going to the range tomorrow with him, will see what happens.

These 545s came with recoil 95 in F3 std length, dispersion was all over the map with pw-7, frankly considered putting the F3s back in the 4-6 with 1/2" extensions and trying that.

 

Will choke down and see, its the easy solution give me a bit lighter sw and change feel a bit

Soft and hard stepping is just fine fine tuning, it's not that big a difference.......usually manufacturers drop SW as irons get longer....d3 in pw to D2 or even d1.5 in 4 iron

Interesting suggestion. I am D4 in set and D6 in Pw, these 545 heads are heavy. Goes back to what others have suggested shortening the clubs means 2-3 sw per half inch, I think. This is the reason for choking down seeing the result

So again, a high swingweight with light shafts may not be an issue at all. Don't get hung up on the number. I had a set of clubs I built with Steelfiber i95's at D5 swingweight and those clubs felt way too light for me. I'm okay with Ping's at D0 but with a heavier shaft, but the i95's were a no-go for me.

No one's getting hung up on numbers (yet). So far it's all been about feel and specifically trying to find the cause for the feel the OP is getting. It may not be the SW but we can't rule it out yet either.

 

All we seem to know is that the F4's at the longer length is a problem for the longer irons, and the F3's at standard length were a problem for the shorter irons. That's 3 variables (length, swing weight, and flex) but only two reference points. Not enough info to even make a guess at this point.

Choking down session delayed due to rain today. Stuart your last is what makes this a bit complex. My only concern is that choking down say a half inch would drop sw 2 points or so, stiffen flex a tiny bit, but not change the overall club weight. I will also be trying normal everything but with a counterweight.

When checking the fit of the swing weight, you don't want to change the static weight. Club static weight and swing weight are separate fitting parameters. Changing it would be introducing a 4th variable. And the change in flex from choking up isn't enough to be an issue. Ideally you wouldn't want to change the length either but since we can't easily remove any weight from the head, it's about the only option available to test out a lighter swing weight.

Well the rain died and at 2 miles from the ocean, damp and dreary and mid 60's. Choking down,about 1/2"changed the feel substantially for the better. I put 1/2 tape on the grip ends. Will try again with fitter on Thursday.

well the net of all of this is simple.. Choke down 1/2", don't think why and enjoy life. No shaft changes, no worrying about sw changes, and nothing about flex.

Now that is the simple answer and the one I want to believe. So what it works. Thanks everyone
