Shortgame Distance Control - Putting, Chipping, Pitching

How many of you actually walk off your putts/chips/pitches?

From putting to chipping to your pitch shots - I want to know what you do in terms of controlling your distances to your target.

1. Do you walk off the yardage for putting, chipping and pitch shots?

2. Do you use one club and control the distance by the length of your backswing and keeping all variables constant.

I've read all his books and I know the part where he explained his 4 wedge system that covers all distances within 100 yards.

 

1/4 swing

1/2 swing x 4 wedges (48/52/56/60) = 12 distances

3/4 swing

 

 

I know this.

 

What about for putting and chipping? Do you guys walk off the yardages on these shots or just play by feel?

 

The reason why I'm asking this, even though I play by myself sometimes, is that walking off yardages takes quite a bit of time, even for putts. Getting the correct yardage helps immensely (for I've calibrated my stroke for certain yardages), but it's just time consuming.

 

After checking for lie, wind, strategy, and walking off yardages from markers on ground, I use the scorecard's green's depth and width illustrations and numbers to further accurately measure distance from ball. Maybe I should just get a rangefinder.

In practice I do it for chipping. On the practice short game area, say I have a S wedge, I walk off the distance (and with S wedge ur meant to land the ball 3/4 of the way) so I put a towell down 3/4 of the distance, half way for a p wedge etc etc. And try and land it on the towell.

Is this a coach for high school or college? Also I'm assuming that when you chip with a sandwedge, you're putting a lot of spin on it by landing it 3/4s of the way. What if you don't execute enough backspin?

 

Does your coach also tell you to walk off pitching distances from 42 yards out for example? It's quite a walk back and forth to your ball.

I don't but I do have a rangefinder. I typically use it for shots between 30 and 130 yards.

For chips and putts I make sure to walk from the ball to the hole, though I don't count the paces. If it's a pitch shot around 50 yards, I'll pace off about half the distance to the hole. Not as accurate of course, but saves time in casual rounds.

 

Isn't the whole point of walking off the yardage is to count the paces to measure distance?

 

I also do what you do with pitches. I walk to about what I think is halfway distance, then walk back to my ball and play the shot.

 

For distance control, I try to keep it simple and feel out the distance. I look at the target and take a couple of practice strokes, just trying to feel out the right amount of stroke. I chip with anything from 56* to a 7-iron. I'll sometimes pitch with as much as an 8-iron if there's high winds or enough of an upslope to the pin.

 

See, I used to play by feel with chips and putts, but I never really got good at it. I would always have a chip or putt that'll be struck too hard and zip past the hole. I now walk every thing off. Even a 6 footer.
