Interesting article on the sound of drivers and their impact on demand

I came across this article on gizmodo this morning and, despite being a tad out of date in that the research was on a much older model, it did shed some interesting light on why some clubs' sound turns off potential buyers despite the performance. The club mentioned is the SUMO 2 and we can almost all agree it had a horrible sound. We all also know that a little hotmelt can go a long way in tuning the sound, especially in a club that performs so well. Anyway, just thought I'd share.

The first time i heard that sound had a influence on the players experience of how that club worked for him, i thought it was a big joke but its not, and its not only sound with the driver, but also from putting. If the sound you get in return is "bad" it will be judged as a bad hit or no good impact spot even when it was, and thats frustrating, so sound do matters, and its quite easy to adjust it on driver (a strip or two of lead tape makes miracles here), while for putters we must either change club head or ball if it does not sound "right" for your ears. The strange thing is that OEMs does not seem to take this subject seriously enough on drivers and thats a shame since they could improve by ease. Ferrari would never launch a new model with bad engine sound, the buyer expect an eargasm, and thats one if the ideas to PXG Golf who takes feel of impact and sound into the math. (Worse driver head sound was a Cobra series 6-7 years ago, they sound "damaged" like there was a cracked face or something like that)

 

If you dont know what a really good impact "should sound like" try a persimmon wood, and it will be hard to play Titanium without dampening the sound it makes. Its the properties of Titanium itself who is "bad" for sound.
