So I went to have my fitting this afternoon and went well.  This was really to check if my swing speed and everything matched the set I bought.  I know I did this backwards, but it is what it is.  So my Driver is fine, correct length, shaft weight and as for flex (could go regular or stiff).  4 & 7 woods, need to go to a lower launching shaft, should probably go to a 70 gram shaft.  Irons, this was my major concern.  They have Modus 105 R in them.  He said I was on the border between 95 and 105, said as I get back to playing more, the 105 should be perfect.  Here is the big thing.  My irons according to the seller were 2* flat.  I really should be at 2 1/2* upright.  That is a big swing.  He called a guy that he refers bending clubs to (supposedly works with tour players) and he felt they could be bent to that, however that is a lot of bending in my opinion.  I am going to go meet with him Monday. 

 

So I pose this question.  Would you try to bend to the 2 1/2* upright or be more conservative and do 1 1/2* or 2*?

Your Honma's are fully forged correct NJBF? If so I would not have an issue with a certified club bender adjusting them. A few questions. Did the guy in the fitting actually measure the lie on your club, or did he just say you needed something 2* up from standard? The seller claimed your irons were 2 flat, but do we really know if they were 2 flat when you got them? Did you measure the lie angles yet on your Honma's? I'm thinking you would have noticed if they were flatter than standard when you first got them, but you have been away from the game for a while. How tall are you sir, and what is your wrist to floor measurement in inches. I am doubtful you are having to bend the set a full 4* . Just my thoughts and hope some of it helps. I also say go with the lightest shaft you can control. When we are older we need help in the equipment department. I am surprised by how many older guys I see that still bag heaver stiff steel iron shafts. I have 65 gram shafts in my fairway woods and find that a great weight. Good to hear the Driver doesn't need addressing.

I believe the Honma's are one degree flatter than most irons and can be bent up to 4 degrees.

Now you have me wondering if mine were flatter than "normal".  I had them bent 2 deg up and hit them on mats and with tape and they are right on the money for me. My Cally wedges were also flat and he bent them as well. I had been taking toe deep divots. I played again today and was pleased at how even and thin my divots were.

I never checked my Honma's. I am pretty standard in terms of lie angle. 5' 11" 34.5 inches wrist to floor.  Maybe 1 up on Pings and 2 on Mizzys but in many iron sets from Cally, Titleist and TM I am standard. I got along fine with my Honma's as they came from the factory. I hit them a few times on lie boards and they showed even impact across the entire sole. 

Checking them wouldn't hurt of course scotee.

I wish I could still play as before. But I can't keep my balance to putt or hit my irons. Oddly I can still hit my driver very straight and well (I think). I have a 12*, and 2 years ago, my grandson invited me to play at his church scramble. We used 14 of my 18 tee shots, so if you do the math, minus the par 3's, we used all of my drives, as there was no rule that you had use different golfer's drives. Made me feel great for a day 🤣 I think something about the ability to stretch out farther with the driver helps me keep standing better and the swing rhythm just works better... Haven't tried it since though. Maybe I will again, DW wants me to this year...

We have some out of state club pro's staying in the guest rooms upstairs this weekend. They are in town for business and golf. The weather was not suitable to play today in the mountains. At 2:30 I received the call from the GM asking me to give two of them a tour of the course. I told the pros to go layer up and get your phones for photos and meet me out front. I grabbed two golf carts from the cart barn and brought them around. I ducked into the Men's Grille and quickly whipped up three instant hot chocolates. We jumped in the carts. "Follow me boys "was my instruction. Into the blustery air we went. Half way through the tour of the course the big flakes started to fall. It was cool to see. To think that only three days ago I was soaking in the warm 58* sun on the same course while playing. After 20 minutes of seeing the course while listening to me babble on the tour ended. They were impressed with the 101 year old Donald Ross classic course, and they remarked that the contrast in colors out there was neat to see. 

 

My Finnish blood becomes more handy this time of year.

Thankfully we are to get less than an inch of snow, but our low temps are dropping into the middle 20's with 20 mph winds.

A lot of questions, hopefully I can answer all of them.  Yes fully forged.  No, he didn’t measure, the seller said they were 2* flat, so I can only take him at his word.  My last set of irons where ping blue dot which was 1* upright.  I am 6’ tall and my wrist to floor is 35 5/8”. I do feel that the toe sits higher than the heel at address, but that may be psychological knowing they are flat.  According to Honma, 7i lie angle is 62:5.  I do think I will eventually swap out shafts in the FW.  Hope that was everything.

Yes you need irons a degree or two up with your wrist to floor measurement. Get them to the trusted club bender and make better contact NJBF. Yes you have an more upright plane and flat lie irons won't work at all for you. Maybe other's can assist but might you be better off with 1/2 longer irons as well? Maybe after they are bent correctly you get 1/2 inch extensions butt end of the clubs and throw new grips on them. I bet they will play better for you. But please that is just my suggestion. Do let the more master craftsmen like Stu and Solo add insight as well to your situation.

Yes it is time for your return Sixty.  No need to get to caught up with the swing at first. Just go out there and whack it around and see if any joy is felt.  Hanging out the Grille makes one want to tee it up.

Whenever I ran the option he was assigned to ignore the pitch and hit me as hard as he could which was fine (even though my dada had to help me into the tub the next morning) but when on the ground he kept rubbing his "nub" through my face mask. I complained to the ref and he said "Son, the boy is missing' half his damn arm so far as I'm concerned he can do whatever he wants with the other half, now shut up and play football ya prima donna". LOL, I thought it was so unfair at the time but a little older and wiser, I certainly understand where the ref was coming from.

I’m going to take to the guy on Monday and follow his advice.  I’m confident this guy knows his stuff, I went to 3 different shops looking at stuff and all 3 mentioned this guy as 1 of the best club builders in the area. They may not be perfect at the moment, but that isn’t going to stop me from hitting balls tomorrow!

... One of the dirty little secrets concerning clubs. Specs are usually radically off. When I was on staff with Titleist, they sent me a set of 762B irons bent to my personal specs. After hitting them, I had an issue with 7 and 8 iron gapping so I took them to Golfsmith and had them checked. All of them were all over the place for lofts and lies but especially the 8i that was 2* strong and the 7 iron that was 2* weak. So yea, the exact same lofts. That is why I bought my first Loft/Lie machine. All the irons I have been given through the years for review were off and by more than a little. Since most have an accepted variance of  + or - 1* or even 2* It's no wonder folks have trouble with their irons. 

... All that said, I have bent fully forged hosels like old Wilson FG blades up to 5*. Depending on how soft, and some bend sooooo easily while other take more effort, I would just bend 5* or maybe bend 3* wait awhile and bend another 2* if necessary. Most likely some or all of your lies are off anyway and you won't need to bend them that much.  And fwiw, I won't even try to bend Ping irons.

Same as Sixty, I would love to be back out on course but cant see it happening, shoulder is playing up and as I have ripped a tendon that requires an operation , I don't think it will happen. I never wake up well from anaesthetic so at my age I will not risk it.

So she appreciates every day more than anyone I know like you say. needless to say I get no sympathy that my footdrop keeps me from playing golf, she says "hold a cane in one hand, and a club in the other!'  This comes from someone who is 5ft. tall and weighs 105, and told me 5 years ago in spring "I think I'm going to try doing triathlons", and my idiot reply? "you can't do triathlons, don't you know how hard they are?" I learned a lot that year  😪

True, but Japanese clubs are always at the top of the list of brands delivered to spec. For mass market clubs, Mizuno is the top brand year-after-year. Honma and Miura are more of boutique brands in the US and are head and shoulders above the mass market brands in quality control.
