Yes Leo Kotke is superb, he used to guest on Prairie Home Companion, and I connived myself a business trip one time a year in advance to Minneapolis/St. Paul to an ISO 9000 seminar, and got tickets to the show, not knowing he would be on it, double plus. It was in February too, -14* (daytime, froze my patooties off too)

Thanks Stu, Yeah I was gonna capture this page by responding to Soloman and saying I'm probably not his cousin having lived in western NY, being from Ohio. My first alcoholic stepfather who couldn't keep a job, moved us up there because he got a job in Buffalo, so his new company moved us, and sure enough he got drunk and asked the new boss' wife out (insert firing squad) so we just stayed up there because he had no money to move us back. Needless to say, he was a real trip... ( unless you remember him as your step-uncle, of course) a lot of people have such types in their family closet (insert major league extreme embarrassment pic)

My work week is over. The sun came out yesterday afternoon and the high temperature hit 51* so all the snow in Asheville melted. Warmer weather has returned to the mountains. Today it will reach 57*.

It's a national holiday so the courses will crowded. I have an 11:40 tee time. Sadly for a second week in a row I couldn't get any of my regular golf buddies to commit so once again I am going to be a single that gets paired up with 3 strangers. 

 

I'm grateful to be getting my third round of the new year in this afternoon.

Got up early and took my clubs to the golf shop, spent Some time with the guy I was recommended to go see.  He checked some things, had me hit a couple balls and developed a plan to get the specs correct.  I’m confident this will be well worth the money.  They will be ready tomorrow, the negative to that is I can’t really go to the range today.

When we are on vacation, I often play as a single and get paired up with strangers.  For the most part, it has always been a good experience and I have made some life long friends.  Several years ago, I was paired up with a gentleman and his son from Dubai.  They vacation in SW Florida during July and each year we schedule a round of golf together.  Another golfing stranger I met has become a good friend and we will play golf 3 - 4 times a year and also have dinner together with the wives.

My wife and I had this discussion this morning. I had a drunk Uncle ( married to stepmoms sister) I would not classify him as a alcoholic though and this is why. He was in the building trades and could do anything from carpentry work to a certified welder. He got a great job with a guy down in Florida putting up all those Silver Springs signs along the interstates in Florida Georgia and Alabama. Did not touch a drop for 4 years. After that he worked for the same guy putting up the South of the Border signs along I 95. He stayed sober then. As soon as the last job was over he pulled like a 2 year drunk. A guy that owned a big construction company came to him needing a General Super to restore the big county library. He quit that day and stayed sober 2 years. When that project finished back in the bottle again. His brother was the same as he was could do any building trade. In fact his brother worked as a welder on the Alaskian Pipeline. Stayed up there 4 years did not touch a drop came home got into the bottle again. Yeah I can not figgure some folks out

Oh I know the feeling...My brother just published a novel in the fall about growing up in the household with him and how difficult it was, he left me out of it as it was from his perspective and his trauma trying to lure in girl friends in such an atmosphere...

The grille as I've known has always been a clean place without sexually active cartoons, that's all, kids do come here  for the banter and golf interactions, has nothing to do with what I find, although being an original member, I like to see it keep its original principle.

Got past being a beginner and could actually finger pick a few tunes ... but it became abundantly clear I would never be even moderately good at it. I am just not a small muscle finger control kinda guy. I marvel at you guys that put in the hours and hours of work and became a Guitar Player. I have kept my Alvarez to remind me of my failure and keep me somewhat humble but tip my cap to you and others that can make their instruments cry and sing.

Yes, nice Alvarez. Yes, Tommy Emmanuel, I've soaked up as much as I possibly can of his on YouTube, great stuff. Hey Evanston, know it well, my next to last company had a second location in Skokie that I visited about once a month for years. It's how I got to know all the great Chicago pizza joints so well 😋 and the bagel places too...can't remember if it was Bagal & Bialy on Dempster or what but there was a great place for bagals there.

... My Hendersonville friend and I were playing CCove one day and I was helping him with his game. There were two groups behind us that had to be all over 80. I would look back and sometimes see 4 balls rolling on the green at the same time and they were pushing us pretty good so we waited for them on the 9th green intending to let them play through. "We are a 90 and over league so thanks but we only play 9 holes" Chatted with them a minute and the next group showed up with one ex marine asking what the problem was. No problem said his friend, these gentleman were going to let us through on the back because they felt they might be holding us up. "Not them ..." and pointing to one in his group "... but this f****n rookie just turned 90 and if he didn't plumb bob his 4th putts we would have passed your azzzez!" and his entire group had a nice belly laugh. 

... That was over 30 years ago and now approaching 70 in a few months, I can only dream of having 7 friends over 90, playing golf twice a week and still giving each other a hard time.

I'm with you. I played guitar and Bass for 45 years in bands and I never could finger pick worth a damn.

I say this with all due respect to the original Grille members.  Also as a person that only started hanging out here about 2-3 months ago, and didn’t read the 1200+ pages to find out the entire vibe or unwritten rules.  Also I’m probably 1 of the youngest people participating in this thread, I doubt teens are reading this thread and trust me they would be laughing, because the stuff they look at online or through TikTok and other social media, Is a heck of a lot more riske or inappropriate than the cartoon posted.  I have a teenage son and I’m appalled at some of the crap he shows me.  So let’s not ruin the vibe and potentially chase someone away, cause the more that contribute the better.  That’s all, now back to the banter.

... As the newest member I'll add my perspective. Maybe it is because of all that is out there and expected in todays world that some might prefer a more PG Grill. Easy enough to avoid racy material, as I deleted a mildly risqué post at the request of another. That's said I do agree that women and children really don't enter into it given everything on line and even in broadcast commercials! But to be honest, it is always nice to hear a comedian like Nate Bargatze (might be my favorite at the moment) with a very "clean" routine and still hilariously funny. So while I personally see nothing wrong with the cartoon, I certainly understand some wanting to keep this place a little more Leave It To Beaver than Always Sunny in Philadelphia. 

Of course this is just my opinion and may not be shared by others. Check with your doctor before disagreeing. Some may experience an irregular heart beat, excessive stomach acid, mental fog or confusion, temporary facial disfigurement and as always in rare cases sudden death.

I am off the course and now catching up in the Grille. I see in my absence there has been a bit of controversy today. I would first like to start by apologizing to the group and especially the founding members. I believe it was some of my contributions that made other fairly new Grille members comfortable with on occasion sharing racy stuff of their own . That also goes for the fairer sex. With my 15 years on WRX I do know that there are some females that read many WRX threads without posting anything. We wouldn't want a gal or lady seeing repeated vulgarity here in the Grille and then report it to the MOD's resulting in the place getting warned or even worse. I learned today that the Grille was founded on more pure values and this racy stuff really has no place here. Does vulgarity really add anything of value to the Grille's rapidly moving pages? No it really does not. Will we laugh less because it has been omitted? Not likely because most of this group has a natural wicked decent sense of humor. I have gotten the message and will stop the crud.

Supposed to hit 50 here tomorrow, so i will be hitting old golf balls towards the lower

yard, just to get a swing or two !  I dont think i will try a course  since we have had so much rain/snow. My cataract work went well. I had no idea how bad my sight had gotten. I remember Rad saying his wife mentioned the bright colors. She was right !

Not much else happening in this area. Still looking at clubs on Ebay, but not really sure i want to change ! we'll see when spring gets here.  And spring is only 63 days away.

Not that I am counting !
