A couple years ago went to Mexican w/my pops. He ordered the menudo and it smelled like they didn’t wash it very well… I was barely able to eat my tacos! 🌮 😜 Now if I’m picking up food for him and he asks for menudo I get him Pozole and tell him they were out of menudo 😉

My in laws good friends with this big NYPD retired Irish cop, meat and potatoes guy, but his wife has been feeding him tripe stew for decades without telling him 🤣

 

The main foods people like that I don’t are soft shell crabs and hard boiled eggs.

With you on the soft shell crabs! It’s even hard to watch ppl eat them even on TV. Seems they have them a lot on triple D! 🤷🏼‍♂️

Have never tried zucchini flowers. Now, there was a place called A's in Dana Point, CA that

served up the best fried zucchini I ever had. They weren't slices, they were long sticks like

giant fries and served with their home made salsa for dipping.

 

Man, when I lived in Dana Point for awhile I would drive down to A's just to get the Zucchini.

While we are on shellfish can I please give a big thumbs down to Maine Lobsters served with that

vile green snot on them.🤣

 

Every day I would take a nice big Australian Lobster tail with a cup of drawn butter to dip it in.

That's the way to eat lobster! Growing up in SoCal I never saw a Maine Lobster or that green

snot. Only lobster ever served was the big Australian tails with drawn butter.

as a kid I loved fried chicken livers. I’d eat 10. But one summer I went catfish fishing. Well. If you like chicken livers. Don’t ever use them for bait. Or handle them raw. They have a smell that’s unforgettable.  I washed my hands for 3 days and could still smell it in them. No lie. I went to the barn and got a gas can and ran gas on my hands to replace the smell.  I smelled gas for a day. But the liver smell was gone. Gagging thinking about it. 

Drive up to Tomales Bay fairly often and up there they all about opening em up and putting them on the grill. Not my thing, but ppl seem to love em.

Yep, I won't eat anything I used for bait..........and that includes squid, anchovies, mussels, 

stink cheese and fish eggs and worms.

 

Live squid were always fun to catch in the bait tank. You gotta have the head toward you and

the legs facing away from you, else you get sprayed with ink when you pull them out of the

water to put on your hook.

My usual, 2 tuna, one yellowtail, flying fish roe on the left (they like pop rocks!), eel, crispy salmon skin roll in the back and on the right…toro (tuna belly) sashimi! The bacon 🥓 of sushi!

 

Then order a couple more pieces when I’m done! Wash it down with a bottle of cold saki. Wife don’t do sushi, she get like lobster tempura and big ramen 🍜 bowl.

I'm with the wife. I spent too many days ocean fishing with the smell of fish all day and

then cleaning my fish at the end of the day. I cannot eat raw fish but I respect that

others like it. 

 

My favorite fish is Alaskan Halibut steaks. The meat is light but firm, boneless, and

can be seasoned any way one chooses. I used to buy it cheap BITD in California.

It's scarce around here and usually way overpriced when someone does have it.

Aen got me thinking with his above post. It’s been said my posts aren’t serious nor informative. And I agree with that selfless and well intentioned observation. Therefore I offer up the following Sri Chinmoy quote in an attempt to balance out my WRX persona, as well as my IRL self. Hopefully these words resonate with some of you 😊

The two dark sushi are akami. Let's call it the "value cut." The sashimi is chutoro the center or middle cut and appropriate for the grade too. If they have otoro, the fattier best cut, it's the one for you!

 

The aesthetics tell me it wasn't prepared by an experienced Japanese sushi chef. That's fine, but there is an artistic balance missing.

A Japanese company buys fresh (well, still frozen from the boat) in the early morning at the Tokyo fish market and flies it out to the US that morning to real Japanese restaurants throughout the US. If they're getting their fish from there, it's top shelf.

 

How to eat sushi like you know what you're doing:

 

Don't use chopsticks to try to pick up the sushi from the bottom with the rice. It just make you mad when it falls apart.

Turn it on its side, then pick it up holding the fish and bottom of the rice together.

Then dip only a part of the fish into the soy sauce. You don't soak the rice in soy sauce.

Or, you can use chopsticks with a slice of ginger. Dip the ginger in the soy sauce and paint a little on the fish.

 

If all else fails, it's fine to use your fingers to pick it up and dip the corner of the fish in the soy sauce before stuffing it in your mouth. Not considered rude at all.

 

Never pick up or pass some non-food object with chopsticks. Really bad form. Family members separate the bones from ashes of a family member after cremation this way, and JUST DON'T DO IT. There is no joke can be made doing it. It will not be funny under any circumstances.

 

Never stick your chopsticks into a bowl of rice and leave them there. Another symbol of death and is never funny.

 

I'm sure some already know this, but just in case some don't and you end up at a sushi place.

 

 


 

Good analysis Sol! That place is very good, and they got like 50 different sakEs 🤣 list that shows how each bottle ranks in terms of being sweet vs dry.
It’s actually easy to tell if a sushi place is good in NYC… you just look in the window and see mostly Japanese people eating there ; )

 

Now, how about the aesthetic on this place? Awesome sushi and they make a special octopus sashimi (sliced so brilliantly it’s not tough at all) in a delicate wasabi infused broth!

People think of Italians (from Italy) eating pasta all day but, depending on the region, some areas eat a lot, if not mostly, fish!

 

If fact, we was hangin in Rome and met this very cool couple from the city and they shared their favorite sushi restaurant with us. It was wayyy off the tourist path, down these winding streets off the  Piazza Navona, was full of artsy Italians and hipsters dogging sushi. Was pretty good but the most memorable thing was the pistachio gelato!
