Admit it, I think I could count on one hand the things I don’t or won’t eat. Many things I enjoy were on the earlier “no fly list” posted about a page ago. Some of them, if I just don’t think about specifics too much, I’m good. 
 

Onto more standard fare, sushi might be my favorite of all, and of all sushi, I put tuna belly and eel at the absolute top of the list. 
 

I basically don’t eat beef any more, and I could give up all meat tomorrow if I could still eat seafood. I absolutely love fish, which makes living in western PA perfect 🙄 since decent quality is inconvenient to get here and very costly. Now, catching my own in Florida? Shoot, fishing makes golf look like a poor man’s hobby….all that fresh snapper was more expensive than the other stuff that used to come into Miami through Haulover and up the river 😂.

as a kid I loved fried chicken livers. I’d eat 10. But one summer I went catfish fishing. Well. If you like chicken livers. Don’t ever use them for bait. Or handle them raw. They have a smell that’s unforgettable.  I washed my hands for 3 days and could still smell it in them. No lie. I went to the barn and got a gas can and ran gas on my hands to replace the smell.  I smelled gas for a day. But the liver smell was gone. Gagging thinking about it. 

 

If it weren't for SPAM, I'd have starved a few times. I still have it now and then (fried of course) just as a reminder. Scrapple on the other hand is a one and done.

The unagi (eel) looks really good. Wasabi must be pinched into a mini Mt. Fuji. No melon ball scooper thingie and it’s too much. 😉

 

I forgot that you never, ever, ever pass food between chopsticks. Never. I should make a pdf of the rules to be printed, laminated and carried in a wallet. Kind of like cricket, which no one knows the rules.

SPAM sushi is an Okinawa thing. People were starving and SPAM from the Marines became a favorite. Even to this day.

Cool, I can dig the formality of Japanese culture, the stoicism and utmost respect for manners. The perfection of the presentation of the food. 
 

Although…while I’ve had sushi hundreds of times, my chop stick game remains abysmal 🤣

 

I definitely grab the bottom and desperately try to hold it together and balance lest I drop the fish right off the rice!

 

Im generally a very messy eater. At Italian place when they remove my plate, the blank spot where it was sitting is always surrounded by bread crumbs and other bits of dropped food 🤣

I think we all suspected that. 😉

 

Japan is the land of ceremonies. Pinching the wasabi ceremony, putting a tee in the ground on the first tee ceremony (tee ceremony, not tea ceremony), etc.

 

I can’t tell you how many times people would say that I used chopsticks very well.

 

I’d wait until just the right time to reciprocate and tell them they used a spoon very well.

My usual, 2 tuna, one yellowtail, flying fish roe on the left (they like pop rocks!), eel, crispy salmon skin roll in the back and on the right…toro (tuna belly) sashimi! The bacon 🥓 of sushi!

 

Then order a couple more pieces when I’m done! Wash it down with a bottle of cold saki. Wife don’t do sushi, she get like lobster tempura and big ramen 🍜 bowl.

I will come right out and say that I might be the most boring eater on here. I'm mostly a meat and potatoes guy who also loves Italian food. Other than that I'm fussy as hell when it comes to seafood. But I'm good with that and have no need to change. My wife and I celebrated our 44 year anniversary yesterday and our place of choice for dinner was Texas Roadhouse. And it was Gooood!!😁

Mmmmmm, BBQ. 
 

Having traversed this nation multiple times at leisure, I’ve had opportunity to sample the broad spectrum of it.  Top of the list?  Carolina Q, but the rest aren’t kicked off the table either.  Only bad meal I had was visiting my kid out in San Angelo, TX.  My sole requirement is the meat must outweigh the attached fat.  They failed miserably.

The chop sticks certainly explain the lack of obesity issues in Japan ; )

Oddly enough, I enjoy raw oysters, but only out of New England or PNW waters. The ever warming Gulf water is a non-starter for me. 
 

And I’ll eat Oysters Rockefeller as a double order for an entree. Maybe the best I’ve ever had were at Mitch’s in Palm Dessert last Weds. 

 

But no raw eel, octopi, sea cukes, and esp urchin!  
 

I did have a great time at a fabled NYC sushi place my sister sent our group to (my vote for Il Mulino Italian lost). Can’t remember name @bscinstnct.  Somewhere near Flatirons. I love knives and spent maybe 30 minutes discussing various blades and sharpening techniques with the chefs on the line.

Favorite Sushi is scallops, such a different flavor than cooked. Very sweet and not at all fishy, I would dare say if the sushi tastes or smells fishy pass on it.

Absolutely. Most sushi places now are Chinese run. You get a lot more money for sushi than Chinese food. The fish is not sushi grade, it’s downright dangerous.

Yep. I could do Spam fried if I had to.  It’s not like treet or Vienna sausages. Something about those two and their pale color is just bad.  I know All these things because my father in law eats them on purpose. And he’s not poor. 🤣.

Ya, I’d say never eat sushi at a place that isn’t owned and staffed totally Japanese! Ideally, 1st generation immigrants!

 

And certainly not at a place that serves Sushi & Chinese food. Big red flag
 

As @Jim53 said, sushi should never “smell” and you shouldn’t even smell fish in a sushi restaurant. 
 

Thats the amusing thing, people eating can o smelly tuna but think the freshest is gross. Plus, interestingly enough, fresh tuna has no smell, it’s cooking it that makes it smell 🤔

Yep.  I love sushi. But I had my eyes opened by a local place. They are as you said , getting their fish flown  in from Japan , and you can instantly tell the difference.  
 

It’s a Tai  restaurant with a sushi bar. One owner is local , the other owner  (his wife ) is a Tai  immigrant. And she’s the boss ! 🤣 So I’ve become friendly after my son started selling them fresh veggies in the summer.    After talking with them I’m very picky about where I’ll eat it now. But when I go to their place. I have spicy tuna rolls until I pop with a side of sashimi , and their homemade sauce.  Good grief it’s good.

I’m totally fine with staff trained by a Japanese owner. I always eat at the counter and speak Japanese with the owner(s). It usually gets me something special gratis, not that I’m cheap. Japanese people love to hear their language, as most people do in other countries.

 

@huskydawg’s Japanese is like a native speaker, really good. I’m not too shabby.

 

Did run into a Japanese guy with a sushi place in LA that was crap. He was drunk and I knew he was never a sushi chef. It was all just nonsense, but the place was packed with people who didn’t know the difference. I let him know gently that I knew in Japanese not to embarrass him in front of the customers. He admitted it, but we had a good laugh at the cash he was raking in.

 

騙される！(damaseru!) To deceive or cheat.

 

It’s amazing what you can get away with if you say it with a smile. 🙂

I know people who love that. I despise it too. It's their waste. Ewe. You're supposed to scrape it away. Lobster, off the boat from a fishing town like Gloucester, MA is the bomb though.

IMO, less is more when it comes to seasoning, sauces, etc. on things that come from the ocean.  Good seafood should need very little, if any.

 

Fish like false albacore, bluefish, barracuda.....if they have to be smoked in order to taste good, they aren't any good.  False albies are fun to catch, but throw those things back, I'm not eating that.  🤮

Dang, the food talk has gained some nice traction! The GF and I are doing sushi 🍣 tonight. She does a lot of Mexican for me. So it’s only right 😊

Pacific Barracuda are smaller than their Atlantic cousins and are very tasty. I caught

and ate a lot of Barracuda back in my saltwater fishing days in SoCal.

 

I have never heard of "false Albacore". Albacore are also known as "longfins" because

of their long pectoral fins. What are false Albacore?🙂

Agree, good fish just need salt pepper lemon and maybe little butter

 

The one smoked fish I used to love to get was that white fish spread on bagels 🥯! Or lox too

And for good beef 🥩 I’d say only salt n pepper as well. As they say in the smokin’ meat world,  ‘Dalmatian rub’.
