I find it special when a fellow WRX member comes to Asheville wanting to play some golf with me. Over the past two years I have been fortunate to host two great guys.  Mr. J was the first WRX brother to visit (first photo pink shirt) and he flew all the way to the western North Carolina mountains from Phoenix. We played two rounds together and one evening I had a lovely dinner downtown with Mr. J. and his wife. J is a really good player and shot only a few over both rounds. A handful of times while playing together I complimented him on his ability to adjust easily to our hilly golf courses coming from flat Maricopa County, AZ. The second great guy to come tee it up with me was Mr. NCL (second photo). Mr. and Mrs. NCL are also North Carolina residents so they drove across the state from Chapel Hill. I learned early that Chapel Hill was only just the name of a town that they lived in the vicinity off, but I was not to mention anything about the University that is there. 😄  NCL is one of the biggest DUKE fans that I have met while living in NC. He had a Duke headcover and a Duke golf towel, and some of his apparel also donned a big blue D.  Mrs. NCL was also a very dedicated Dukie. NCL is also a LP so naturally we became good friends and golf buddies right out of the gate. I played two rounds with NCLancer and his wife and the three of us had a fun time playing together both afternoons. I have met a good many people in my career that hail from upstate New York and all of them are fine folks. Mr. NCL was no exception. Lance and Lawrence plan on playing together again in the not to distant future because we so enjoyed each others company.  Mr. Rad you will be the third WRX'r to play with this old blonde guy here in the mountains.  Gents I am excited to meet Conrad in person tomorrow and I am very much looking forward to playing two rounds with our kool kat from Alabama.

Sad to hear that my friend’s farmhouse in Asheville burned last night. They were away at a wedding in Ohio and at the same time there was a wedding at their event center. One of the employees saw and called in the fire. Looks like a total loss but the other buildings on the place are fine. He has a large wood shop and makes furniture and restores antiques. No doubt they lost some nice things but they were safe and things are just things.

Sometimes I enjoy playing the role of the thrift store golfer.  When I feel the need to look as though I belong, then I have my main set that's newer and far more stylish and matchy, matchy...  😬

In reality I am sorta the thrift store golfer or rather the junkpile golfer especially on the classic stuff. But then again in the main bag the Muirfields came straight off the junkpile as did the rusty Scotty. I used to really draw some looks back when I carried one of my mini staff Titleist bags as in a nice bag with lead taped banged up VIPs rusty 588 wedges and either a Cleveland 8802 or Ping Zing putter. A golf friend passed I guess 15 years ago now had what I call a hat and visor fetish. Anywhere he went if he saw a hat or visor he wanted he bought it. Mostly product ones. When he passed his wife went back up North and she left me like 3 boxes of new unused hats and visors. I have went through most of those now between golf and work. The only one I have left from that "stash" is a Ben Hogan one I wear only when I drag out my 55 Precision irons. LOL I have been known to go out on the course with the Titleist Staff bag and TM hat with neither brand in my immediate posession. The last 5 years or so I have worn only floppy hats on the course which I rotate out 3 of. 

I guess like 5 years ago I got on one of my anal jags and decided I did not want to be a mini sandwich board advertising guy. I went low key with either the non descript Burton mini staff bag or the Jones bag. I also do not wear any golf product logo shirts either. All my floppy hats have club logos on them including one from my former course and one from my present course. My attitude is no one pays me to advertise. Besides I like what is called shabby chique down here with the Tommy Bahama shirts etc. Yeah I relish in the Salvation Army look. I will admit for now I do have a Callaway cover on the Alpha driver that came with it but it is sharp and goes on and off the driver well so for now it is in.

Irons were always a little short, but good grief, using Moe’s technique around the green was stupid fun. Never took a divot and every pitch left a gimme.

We have an older guy that plays the shootout with us sometimes. He is a big Moe Norman fan and he aint even Canadian he is NJ Italian. His real name is Bob but we call him Mo. But he is a real good stick to be in his 80s especially around the greens

Other than the loft difference to modern clubs you can't actually go wrong with some ISI's. A couple of months ago our pro got his hands on a set of Eye 2's. We had great fun taking them on the course and they still hit great. You just have to get used to the idea of hitting 1 maybe 2 clubs more than mordern clubs.

I've been getting more and more interested in irons from the past. The new stuff everybody keeps churning out do nothing for me.

I posted this in the I&A forum (brave I know) but thought since most of you guys don't venture there you might enjoy the conversation here where it is more civilised.

 

I've always found the grip to be one of the most fascinating parts ofs the swing and how it's effect on not just the golf ball but the overall swing can be so monumental. 

 

I think each person must find the grip that works best for them however there are certains principles all should follow. 

• Grip must be more in the fingers than palm of the left hand (assuming right handed golfer)
• Hands must mesh closely together, with minimal spacingf between them.
• Fingers must be closely knitted together, no gaps between fingers (right index finger position is a personal preference)
• Left thumb must sit in the head line of the right hand and on top of the club. 
• Left palm pad mu be on top of the grip.
• The right hand sits in the middle joint of the middle fingers.
• The right hand should have the index knuckle on the right hand side of the club to enable the hand to support the club at impact. 

 

Also I dont think people consider the shape specifically but also the size of the hand enough when discussing grips

Persoanlly I have what palm readers call fire hand. 

 

The fingers are short and my palm is large compared to my fingers. My palm is also more square than retangular leading to my hand overall being on the small size. 

 

I wear Mens small cadet gloves yet play standard grips, just with one layer of tape below them. 

 

For dimernsions my hands are:

Palm from wrist joint to base of middle finger -4 inches  

Middle finger from base to tip - 3 inches 

 

When I follow the instruction above with my left hand sites on the strong side as my palm has no option but to wrap over the club. Someone with a larger hand with look more weak compared to me due to the way the hand folds to accompate the requirements. My right hand also sits strong due to the short size it is unable to get "over" the left hand however it still fullfills all the requirments above. 

 

My grip looks alot like that of David Duval. I learnt this grip as a teenager from Peter Cowen back in the early 90's when he was at Lindrick and althogh I have tried to make it look "conventional" at times the club is never stable at impact so I resort back to what I know works, despite it's look. 

 

Feel free to ignore the ramblings of another WRXer but after 20 years of golf and qualigying Q school and spending 4 years on the Europro tour in my twenties I feel I have a little to contribute.

I met my nephew at the range the other day. It wasn't planned, I went to practice and he was there with a friend. 

 

He was telling me he had booked a fitting for new irons since he was using one of my old sets. I looked in his bag and he had a set of Lynx Black Cat Tours circa late 90's. I had forgot about them and thought I had lost them years ago. Turns out abot 15 years ago my dad had given them to my brother to use. Turns out that my brother, and both nephew have old sets of mine. 

 

I couldn't resit hitting them and they felt so good, about a club shorter than my current clubs but I would happily play them.

 

The reason he needs new clubs are too fold. 

A - He's a beginnner and needs clubs that are a little more friendly than these.

B - More importantly I had those clubs as a late teenager and I am only 5'11". He is 6'4" so therefore the clubs are just so short for him.

Pretty much the way I was taught---- Oh yeah wait to get flammed in the I&A section especially if one certain guy who thinks he is the Lord High Instructor of the golf world does not agree with you and Pete Cowan. And his diciples will pile on like flies on schmitt--- I have like 4 of them blocked including Mr High and Mighty---- And yes you have a lot more creed in the golf than Mr High and Mighty does or ever will have. I am an example to re enforce your point. I have huge Ham Hock hands and wear a 2X to 3X glove yet I use standard grips. I also manulipulate the club in my fingers. I have had people trained in modern ways try to tell me I play too small of a grip for my hand size. They have no conception of our old school ways. Nothing wrong with new school I guess--- Like I always say there is no one etched in stone way to properly play this game---- That is one of the things I caught flack on over in the I&A section plus the Arnold Palmer quote about swinging your own swing--- Glad to know I think on the same lines as you and Pete Cowan

I am always sceptical when someone tells me that there is only one right way to do anything, especially when it comes to golf. If you have a swing that is repeatable and delivers the club square to the ball more time than not, I see no need to change.

 

My swing has changed over the years largely driven by advancing age and injuries (not golf related). My younger athletic self utilized the power In my legs in a way that I could not maintain. Now, with a bad right knee, it acts as a speed limiter and I have adapted with a shorter, more controlled swing and it works for me resulting in what my friends call “boring old man golf”. The important thing is to own your swing and do the best you can.

 

There are of course some fundamentals that are important. A good grip and repeatable setup are important for consistency, but there is more than one way to skin a cat.

I really have no idea what you're talking about, but I'm always up for some free tips to try on the course.  FWIW I have the big arc in my palm and I appear to have a fire hand.  The dimensions are:

1.  Palm length 5"
2.  Middle finger 3 1/2"

I wear a FJ Cadet XL glove.   I have a neutral interlocking grip (by my estimation).

 

AS for grips, I have used some type of midsize since the beginning, although I am trying the reduced taper currently with some in midsize and some in regular.

Compared to me your hands are huge. 

 

An Inch longer in the palm and half inch longer in the middle finger. 

 

If you follow the bullet points you should have a sound, solid grip that allows everything to work properly. However it will look drastically different to mine even tough we follow the same guidelines based on how your hands mold and fold while fitting the requiremnts.

Below is a video from the other day, you can see how my hands wraps around the club to hit the checkpoints. This is a result of my small hands, your hands won't need to wrap around as they are larger and therefore will look more "placed" on the club.

I don't really conform or believe in the neutral/strong/weak classification. 

 

Basically I beleive if you hit the checkpoints your grip is fundamentally correct and works correcly for you. 

 

Cowen talked and still does (he hasn't really changed his beliefs) that the muscles must be allowed to work correctly in the swing. This grip gets evedrything lined up correctly to enable that. 

 

Give it a try and see what you all think.

Exactly I really had to change mine after my accident. Really the swing and the approach. And yes absolutely my swing is a whole lot shorter and I will admit more controlled. My lifelong bud when he played with me last week said now I am a better ballstriker than I have ever been. He ought to know we have been playing together since we were teens. But the distance is not there anymore. I had to learn to accept that fact. I have to swing as I do now to be able to play at all pain free. I kept having relapses due to the fact I was trying to swing my old swing. Frankly I kept killing myself and after the shootouts it took me 2 days to rehab. I was going to quit the game alltogether because the pain was not worth it. Now my wife will tell you I am not a quitter. She related to my racing if I got tore up or had problems somehow I found a way to sit up on the wheel take two handfulls of wheel and drive the sucker to the finish except if it fell apart or blew up. I did a lot of experimenting and came up with a Jon Rahm Tony Fineau type half swing with the Trevino follow through. I am still in the rebuilding process but it is slowly coming around. Now some days I can not time things up and make my body move like it needs to from the permanant nerve damage in my back. I learned to accept that. I sorta relate myself to Freddie Couples in that area. If his back is good like last week well he is on if it is not then meeh same with me. 

I also realized on the course I was throwing myself out of sync from trying to get distance by swinging hard. I took assesment and realized on a good day I only hit a driver about 210 220. I moved up one set of tees now I do not push the distance issue and golf is fun again. Like I tell folks I have a 65 year old body with a 75 year old battered patched up back

Buddy: “No, you don’t understand. This will not make it another hour, much less the night. This is a huge safety and fire issue. This is beyond dangerous, and you are putting your employees and customers in extreme danger if you don’t shut this down now.”

 

Client: “No, I can’t afford to do that.”

 

My buddy took pics with his cell phone and left. He called the fire chief’s office but didn’t get anyone, so he left a message. About three in the morning, he got a call back asking him to get back to the bar. Yep, it burned to the ground. Thankfully, everyone got out okay. A few had to go to the hospital for smoke inhalation but were released a few hours later.

 

Fire Chief: *To my buddy* “So, the owner said you were the electrician that worked on this just a few hours ago. What happened?”

My buddy figured they had the idea HE did something to cause this fire. He explained everything and showed him the pics.

 

Buddy: “Look, Chief. I knew this would go up in flames. I told him. I even called your office when I left here and left a message for you. I did no work on this because I knew this was dangerous. I tried to tell him to shut it down.”

 

The chief immediately had charges brought against the owner who later had to pay all the hospital bills. Plus, insurance refused to cover the loss because of the negligence. The sad thing is that this was not the only case of someone not listening to my buddy and their business or house end up burning down.

Always listen to the professionals you hire. They know what they are talking about.

My observations are:

1. You can gauge the basic caliber of a player first time by their grip.

2. Elite players are more meticulous about taking their grip.

3. Your swing adapts to your grip.

4. Chafing on the pad of the glove of the lead hand is the first problem to fix for the average player.

 

 

Here are two very simple tests to see how important your grip is and how it affects things.

 

Test 1

- Take 7-iron and go to your setup position.

- Without swinging, move to what you think is your impact position.

- Is the club head facing right? You’ve probably grooved a flip to square the face.

- 

 

Test 2.

- Same club and setup position.

- Rotate your trail hand more on top of the lead hand, but leave the thumb and fingers open and extended on your trail hand. If you had arrow pointing out from your trail palm, the arrow will be pointing near the lead knee.

- Push the club toward the target with your trail hand and move your body with it until your trail arm is straight.

- Notice your trail hand rolls over more and your hands exit lower with the shaft pointing more left. That’s a corner release.

 

 Do the same test with your trail hand on the trail side of the grip and arrow pointing toward the target. Notice the release and your body motion is different.

 

Same for the trail hand rotated a little more underneath the grip with the arrow pointing a little up and to the right for a right handed player. Notice again that the release and body motion is different.

 

The grip determines the natural release and exit of the club. Trying to fight the release pattern pre-determined by your grip  will affect your entire swing.

 

Hey, you can’t swing like Hogan without Hogan’s grip, no matter what you do.
