lately I’ve been enjoying Paul Harvey again.  Here’s two of my favorites.  You’ll have to listen to hear who “ the rest of the story is “. But it’s a pretty famous guy.  
 

on the farmers.  This should be played in every school on earth.  Folks take for granted daily where their food choices come from. That’s funny.  I’ve always said that. Except I added in “ I never expected to get this old. And don’t expect to ever be old “. Folks that plan for old age intrigue me. What it must feel like to have the idea or confidence from birth that you’d see old age.  I don’t know if that’s delusion or a true blessing. Probably some of both.

If I would have known I'd make it to 71 I would have taken better care of myself.

I hear ya.  I also wonder about that though.  Is it because you could have , or because you wish  you could ?      
 

for me it’s the latter.  And it might just be a skewed context. Maybe I’m way better off. And will be 105. Who knows.  
 

I quit drinking soft drinks around age 34. (I’m 44)  I have never held a lit cigarette much less smoked. Might average 5-10 beers a year.  If that. Probably haven’t had 2 since 2019. I eat as clean as possible. But will admit that a tight schedule some weeks makes for a less than stellar menu ( speed over quality ). I take no meds.  And Ive been to the doc yearly for a full work up ( blood draw , pee and all ) since I was a runner in school.  . Although I didn’t go last year.  ( need to schedule  that I guess).   But the bad is I’ve led a very stressful life.  Basically since day 1. No need in detailing all that formative years stuff. But it’s alot.  And I chose a very stressful career path. You don’t produce. You don’t eat.  And with the advent of technology, I’m on call 24/7 366. But I’ve always been able to make money appear out of thin air when needed.  I can’t imagine not being able to. Basically a hustler.  In the pure and honest sense  of the word.  The consequences of this though is a constant stream of worry. Or maybe more accurately thought.  Can’t be turned off at this point.  I often wonder if I had a different path , if that  mind would be the same or not?   This isn’t treating yourself well.  But I’ll be damned if I can see a way around it. Workhorse has to work.  Or he has no use.  That’s basically the bottom line.  
 

So in all that rambling , I’m saying I don’t think I treat myself bad like normal people mean it , with diet , sloth , alcohol or smokes.  I’m nearly a teetotaler at most of those. But I absolutely abuse my body working , and worrying. To the point that I can’t take time off. I’ll find a way to monetize that , by saying “ this sucks. I could have gotten xyz done today instead of playing golf in the mud and shooting xx” ( insert whatever score makes sense for the reader).    The only time lately I let myself off the hook is for my son.  I’ll quit work if the pope was having me paint the pope mobile and was standing in front of me, to attend a school function or game of my sons.  I don’t care who it is.  I’m going.  And I’m present while I’m there. Phone is off. 
 

So I guess I’m asking.  In the doldrums of life , what is better ?  Better care ?  Is it just diet and physical health ?  Or is it overall balance.  I’m looking for it. But so far it still takes at least 50 hours to make my weekly nut.  And another 20 at least on top of that taking care of the farm in winter.  I do waste time on here. But in the grand scheme I do it usually while waiting for something to do something , or while I’m resting my back from standing.  So I hear ya. I think we all should take better care.  The how is the question.

Yep I hear that.  But I can’t say that I’ve ever lived life as I wished. 🤣.  I wish I played golf 6 days a week ( I’ll make it 6 to sound reasonable ).  And that I didn’t have to balance a checkbook to see what or when something can be afforded.  Thats never been a reality. And I doubt it ever will be. I like what I do in context of forced labor. But I wouldn’t choose to do it instead of other things ( not just golf).  Now if I were independently wealthy , I may spend a lot of time building cars or things for myself. But there’s a world of difference between working for the public , and working for yourself.   The public is the issue. I’m not a person that craves being around people. Actually opposite.  It’s a chore I generally loathe.  But do for the greater good.  Or end goal.  
 

so . Retirement for me would be affording to do what I do now - for myself. And playing golf any day I choose ( when it doesn’t interfere with the wife’s schedule ).  This is the rub.  It’s not possible. And that’s why I say i cant  imagine being old.  When I say old. I don’t mean numerically either. I guess I mean too frail to hustle.  When usefulness is gone. So will I be. 
 

I think this is a common realization for folks my age and under. Unless you’re willing to sit at a desk for 45 years , you’re pretty much not looking at retiring.  I’d be dead now if I had to sit behind a desk.  You guys see my ramblings. You can’t tie that to a chair.  It will self destruct.  😉 I’m an outside cat.

The stress thing is not a good situation but I get it. Both my heart doctor and my natural healing doctor both have told me that stress will do you in before eating habits unless you have just a crazy bad diet and sit on your butt all day.

Long ago, the wife would fly off to Paris and designed and managed a flagship Cartier store in the ritzy, old money part of Phoenix. Paul Harvey and his wife were good customers. They lived close by.

 

He would park his big Cadillac around the back and she’d let them in when the store was closed because he didn’t like the limelight. She said they were the nicest, most kind couple. He would hold her hand all the time and they were unfailingly polite and unpretentious.

 

She was invited to the house a few times for small dinner parties and everyone there was the same, she said, including John McCain and his wife, who were also customers and just as pleasant and thoughtful. They had class that transcended their money.

 

Now she’s stuck with scruffy old me.

Youre right that places should take cash, of course. 
 

I always keep cash in my wallet, for places I don’t think I “trust” or sometimes I like to tip at restaurants in cash. 
 

I haven’t taken the plunge with any phone pay apps yet, a card is convenient enough. 
 

But “automated checkout” is coming, it’s here already in some places, I think Amazon had a store in NYC and I know some folks at a big startup with crazy tech….

Yeah, we had one on the same ‘Amazon Go’ stores here. At one point I believe there were something like 45 of them. Some have shut down though.
Obvious to me that it’s not a matter of if, but when regarding cash being very scarce. I’d say around heredity, it’s already the case. It’s very rare to see cash exchange hands at stores these days. (Full disclosure, I don’t see a lot of backyard barn, vintage car deals go down 😜)

Loved the story. But I’d say she knows what  she’s doing.  No reason to question her judgement now. I asked my wife one time. “ wth is wrong with you , putting up with me “. She said “ have you looked at what’s out there “? And walked out of the room. I stood there unsure if that was good or bad. So I chose… to take it as a compliment 🤣.
