In greater NYC, Fed Ex schools the other two on reliability and value. It's probably a regional thing too. Took 4 months last year for USPS to deliver a check across town, UPS Red, means I'm freaking red-faced mad that they failed an ON delivery, once again. FE "ground" is quite reasonable, always use it.

I think you're right Nard. It must be reginal. Here UPS rules. I can't remember the last time something didn't show when it was supposed too with UPS. I cringe when I find out something is coming FedEx. The last thing we had ordered and they were the carrier, we watched it go within a mile of our house 3 times before it was delivered. USPS is the worst of all of them.

Yeah was gonna say, as far as NY goes, UPS is ok, but if you need it done by the time it’s supposed to get done, go FedEx

Yeah agree but here I've had UPS fail me a lot. They are great on corporate accounts, get packages from PA in a day and for cheap but "red" is expensive and unreliable. Fed Ex 'ground", sent a full set to Kansas last week for $26, took 3 days. At times I get ON from Switzerland via Fed Ex and value wise it's a better deal than UPS red and they deliver.

Little known fact…

 

Pretty much all package delivery services have contracts with other package delivery services.  
 

Walk into a UPS center and you’ll see USPS, FEDex, and other packages inside with all their individual semi-trailers out on the dock. 
 

None of them can do it all on their own so they use each other to blanket the map.

 

Why they have individual rules about package sizes and weights is unclear to this village idiot.

You know what it is around my parts? UPS used to run two trucks, one commercial, one residential, now the same guy does both. He stops at my shop in noon hour then same guy is delivering to my house (a mile away) in late afternoon. They are stretched thin here and drivers do 12-hour days. Regional issue.

They (UPS) have to pay for that new Collective Bargaining Agreement somehow. Do you remember around this time last year UPS agreed to a new contract where all employees were going to get a 25+% raise and the new delivery trucks were going to have air conditioning? Well about 6 months into the new contract UPS had to layoff 10K hourly employees nationwide. Now (a few weeks ago) they're saying they have to RIF another 12K employees, this time to include management and contracted employees.

 

Global shipping has some very tight markets. And with the reduction of e-commerce in the past year and a half due to "shrinkflation" and the fact that good help is hard to find, you see more brown trucks being parked and more of their freight being handled by others.

 

* One of the kids (Blades age) I coached when he was in high school is a UPS delivery driver with 18 years on the job now. The above was taken from a conversation on my back porch along with my two sons, a glass of Jameson Black Barrel, and a Macanudo Inspirado. 'twas a grand evening.

all routes and areas are owned and operated by “franchises.” nyc route owner owns the trucks and hires the people. it’s probably the original owner from decades ago and the most profitable.

 

many routes and areas are unprofitable and the owners have to hire the cheapest people with 68 brain cells, or even subcontract to uber eats people delivering in cars.

 

i shipped hundreds of boxes to all continents except antarctica and  had 100% on time delivery using usps priority mail. and it always went through customs smoothly.

 

fedex would charge $400 for the same international shipment that was $100 from usps and they always screwed up customs. stopped using them very quickly.

 

i typed out the same thing @nitram said about ups using the roper doper on contract negotiations. they’re going back to the same labor cost percentage and making the drivers work more. haha! ( i deleted it at 2:30am because i annoyingly type too much and sick of reading my long-winded nonsense as you guys are)

 

as long as it’s tracked, usps has never failed me.

They all suck some of the time.  I’ve had USPS priority mail packages disappear for a week, then magically appear at my door with the tracking totally screwed up.  Fed Ed is probably the pro around here for being AFU. UPS is fair to middlin’ on getting stuff right.

 

Houston USPS sorting is destroyed at this time.  Postmaster had new sorting machines ordered, built and delivered, but they found out AFTER they ripped the old sorters out that the new ones didn’t fit in the building.

I assume the routes are the “last mile” of the delivery process and a hopefully more simple matter of picking stuff up at the local distribution center, after it’s been brought there, and the drivers getting it their final local destination home/business

 

But the global logistics around  the international and interstate delivery would be where, in my experience, there is the most confidence in fedex for more urgent deliveries 
 

Fedex has more than 2x as many planes as UPS so it makes sense they would have an advantage in priority 2-3 day/overnight  shipping.

Good to be seen, TS! Just got back from an extended ski trip. Lots of fun, spent time with our oldest son, DIL and grandson. But it came with a price. Mrs. Lindy tore her ACL and I took a couple of nasty falls that has me worrying about a torn triceps (or whatever might be causing the pain in the back of my arm). My doc keeps telling me to slow down, but in retirement, my mind tells me to speed up while I still can. My ortho surgeon prefers my approach.

Was gonna give ya a “like” prior to seeing the ACL and possible torn bi. Ouch, sorry to hear that. But good for you for not slowing down! Im with you. As soon as one starts saying “I’m too old for …”. Is IMO when they truly start getting “old”. Use it or lose it!

yea, usps doesn't have any planes, but probably every airline flight has usps stuff in the cargo hold.

 

 

dhl is great for international shipments inbound.

 

i can get 75lb boxes shipped from asia to my door in 2-3 days.

i can order a small item from asia and have on my doorstep in less than 48 hours.

Heads will roll.  This is a very irate city with politicians listening.  Everything is being hand sorted, usually a 2-3 day delay at the sorting center.  Reports are the building is literally filled with packages.  They "brought in more staff" to help.
