I do have a love for sockethead capscrews.😁

I did seriously learn this. Different Allen Head set screws weigh differently. Learned that when we were messing with the early Bobby Grace Mark 4 V- Foil putters. The Tour Issue heads used hex head Allen Set Screws for weight. Those heads were standard thread 1/4 by 20 threads. Back then we had a real local owned hardware store up in Surfside Beach. We bought quite a few from him and we had a little assortment in a tray in the shop. LOL when I started back messing with my Grace Broomstick I looked for that tray because the hardware store had long since closed down. Never found that tray in my stuff. Basically I said screw it and did it up Stu Style as in get out the roll of lead tape. Of course you fine folks would expect that from me. Now the retail heads have the sexy little 2 pin weights in them. In the past I had talked to a guy up at Bobby Grace who told me at the time they thought the little 2 pin alloy heads were more sexy to the general public. My how times have changed

I totally agree. The tee shot sets up everything for me. Length isn’t my problem, it’s accuracy. Once I’m in the fairway what type of irons I have is mostly inconsequential, as I’m getting it to the green most of the time. Then as you eluded to, the good short game is paramount. Which reminds me of something I read a while ago in I believe the OG ‘rollback thread’. A member that was adamant that the tee shot was the least important shot in golf and therefore didn’t really matter. I couldn’t disagree more. Perhaps just one of the reasons I despise the rollback thread that won’t die!!!

🤣

Putting distance aside it depends a lot on the course on the tee shot. My home course since it is tight and landing spots on the approach shot can be tricky it is very important position wise. The man who designed our course William Byrd was a genius. You go to different tees and you will find different angles to a proper landing spot again discounting distance. Some courses like the Man O War up towards Conway SC is basically wide open. Now you do have hazards but on the drive the fairways in general are wide open and generally it does not make a hill of beans your angle is to the green. Now do not get me wrong it is a great course with plenty of water hazards and fast bent greens and some diabolical greenside traps. Going back to my course we also have small greens and that makes a difference. Right now with our handicapping software where scores can change daily with posting a round I am hovering between 10 and 12. Our Tournament Director and Handicap chairman says If I would get out and play other courses like others do I am a single digit handicap easily.

So true. I play with two guys that come to mind.  One hits off of his back foot and backs up on every shot. He has grooved that move and hits hard and straight and scores way better than his swing. The other is smooth and loose with max wrist c0ck and elbow bend and has a fair amount of early extension with a high hands finish and lots of club shaft rotation around impact. He plays to 5 or better. Both of them have consistent but different tempo.

Good example of what I have always said----- There is no one etched stone proper way to swing and play this game--- I say it and will stand by it to my dying day despite what ANY of the golf swing gurus say including one on our I&A threads have to say---- I learned that by observing many swings at the course my old man ran. One of the reasons when I was a Class A I was never an instructor and up until lately did not think about my personal methods and ways of doing things. Same goes for equipment too.

BTW, I like The Mick.  Although as an Irish-American, I am offended by that term.

We actually offended an Irish guy one day at the course and did not mean to. He was paired with us in a Shootout. We had a flop shot to a Par 5 and my bud Big Bear said Stuey get out Philly Mick. What he was talking about was my modified PM Cally wedge that we call Philly Mick for obvious reasons. This guy got bet out of shape and we explained things to him. apparently he did not know anything about golf because it went over his head but after he figured no malice was intended he was confused but ok the rest of the day.

I actually should have put a Smiley face on that because I wasn't serious at all.  In the context that was going on at the time, I thought it was kind of funny.   Guess I need to be more careful because my sense of humor apparently comes pretty close to crossing the line around here.  The last thing in the world that I am looking for is an internet forum dust-up.  Life's too short.

When customers would call me at home, after I hung up my wife would tell me she couldn't understand why people bought from me the way I talked to them.😅  She could never wrap her head around the fact that we always talked to each other that way. I had a couple of buddies that were retired Chicago PD so I totally get where you're coming from. 😄

I suppose it's harder to be sensitive when you literally cannot be insulted.

😂😂 You are 100%  right!!! You pretty well have to be a physical threat to get me ticked off. Insulting my wife or family is a different story.😄

@scotee’s link earlier reminded me of the story of the hmas melbourne, a small australian carrier. she and her aircraft never fired a shot in anger, but rammed and sank two friendly destroyers in the 1960’s.

neither were the fault of the carrier. destroyers position themselves in different guard formations off the carrier during flight ops and both incidents happened during night ops. 1,500-2000 yards away from the carrier.

when repositioning, there are to turn away from the carrier to circle to the new position. an australian destroyer turned into the carrier and the collision killed 82 sailors on the destroyer.

five years later, in a joint training exercise with us, australian and british ships, the same thing happened when a us navy destroyer did the same thing. 74 us sailors were killed.

prior to the last incident, the melbourne captain invited the captains of all the escort ships to dinner and gave explicit written instructions and warnings about always turning away from the melbourne. the fleet admiral on board also emphasized this and discussed the previous incident.

but, the uss evans did the same thing. the captain of the evans was sleeping during the night ops and two lieutenants had the bridge. one had failed exams and was unqualified to have the bridge, and the other had never been to sea before. they were all court martialed.

the australian navy relieved both melbourne captains in both instances in a rush to blame them. they both resigned in defiance, but were exonerated later.

anyway, what the heck is going on now in the us navy? in the past 15 months, 31 ships captains have been relieved of duty for lack of confidence in their leadership or misconduct.

Good question.  I have a recently retired Navy chief and a current marine LT as customers. I’ll see what the grapevine is saying is the cause.  The marine is coming in Thursday to see me anyway.

I feel you.  For me, 20 years NYPD.  Nobody comes out of that without getting a little warped.

Thank you for your service even though I do not live there. Still I back the blue. I have worked side by side with them over they years being a Volunteer Firefighter/First Responder and owning and working a wrecker service. When we were in the wrecker business we worked with 3 different LE agencies on a daily basis and sometimes a 4th. Our county is the only county in SC with separate county police and Sheriff's Department. Our Sheriff's department mostly runs the jail and courthouse plus serves warrants. But every now and again they get into a enforcement situation requiring a vehicle being towed. One time with them I was summoned to tow a vehicle involved in a DUI death incident from impound to the courthouse for a jury to see in person.

And yes by working with and being around quite a few LEOs in past years I have also developed a cynical and nutty side too. IMHO it is a way to keep ones sanity. I had noticed my last years in the wrecker service I had developed the early stages of PTSD. I would be at an incident and remember bad wrecks I had worked in the past as a first responder. So yes I am right on board with you being in LE in of all places NYC

You will not ever hear any anti tobacco sentiment from this guy. Like you I was raised around it. And I say life is too short not to enjoy what you like. Hey I chew mine up mostly and you burn yours up. But I do smoke cigars on the golf course from time to time. I can really give the anti tobacco crowd something to talk about because on those occasions I smoke cigars and chew at the same time. Hey if it ends up killing me well then I do what makes me happy
