Knicks take two on Celtics court! Both from 20 down w/ 5:00 left in 3rd. 1st time in NBA playoffs a team has done that. Celtics are rattled, Knicks are rolling, been 3 decades to watch NY hoops at this level of fun.

Thanks.  I will be going with my older brother so we’ll be battling it out in friendly matches.  My father did go with his friend some years back but not with family.  
 

Last year I won the tee time lottery for St. Andrews for 2025 and probably shouldn’t have waited so long to book the rest but we were able to in the end, probably because it was 2 of us instead of 4.  Some of the travel companies are truly outrageous with their prices so if anyone else here is thinking about going there with a big group definitely start booking early.

I am sure others in here have been and have advice, and the following is my $0.02.  St Andrews is really a trip to golf Mecca.  I cannot encourage you enough, because I already know the expense of the trip with the guaranteed TOC time, to get a caddie for those two courses at least.  Ask questions about the astroturf markers, ask about everything, they have been well trained and will know the history, etc. of the course.  To me, this was fascinating, and truly the reason why people go there so I wanted to know as much as possible.

 

Both times I was there I was put with others (of course) and both times there was a person who "didn't want to spend the money" because someone would have a caddie.  Both of my caddies were less verbose (either real or imagined on my part) in the history when they felt someone was looking to get something for free as it were.

 

Have a great time.  Drink a beer at Dunvegans, explore the town, and enjoy the other courses as well.  If you have an extra day, maybe Crail.  Not as great a course, but also a lot of history though I don't believe they offer caddies so you sort of have to imagine it.  Seventh oldest golfing society in the world I believe.

Thank you for the info.  We requested caddies for all 5 courses, because we were warned it’s very possible to get lost out there on top of not knowing where to hit.  Here’s hoping we don’t get paired with cheapskates but if we do we’ll try to press for conversation anyway.

 

We have a day off where we may explore some highlands, castles or go on a whisky tour.  Not a huge drinker (my brother is) but my general choice is a nice single malt scotch, but I’d be down for beer.  Probably can’t make it to the west coast at Dunvegans like you mentioned, since I started a new job in November I could only manage 8 days off.  Hopefully I can get 2 weeks off sometime in the future and play the courses near Edinburgh and Aberdeen and the west coast.

That's the fence behind 18 green there on the right - Dunvegan is on the corner just up that street to your left. 🙂

 

The whole right side of the street is all lil golf shops. 

 

From where this frame is - to the left and bit behind is Ham's Hame; great lil pub that kinda became my home base haha. Pretty sure I had dinner in there every night. 

 

 

Stoked for ya, dude. It really is a magnificent lil town. And it *IS* little. You can walk from one end to the other in not even half an hour. 

 

And since ya said you like Scotch; there's a shop a couple blocks away - Taste of Scotland - that's nothing but whisky. I brought a handful of bottles home from there.

Thanks for the recs!  I was planning on staying in St. Andrews for 2 days then Dundee for the rest of the time as it's closer to Panmure and Carnoustie.  Would you recommend staying in St. Andrews the whole time?  The Old Course hotel is crazy expensive but I heard it's nice.

Nerd alert, and this could get long.  I graduated from college with a useless history degree with a focus on Intellectual History of Western Civ, fortunately I got a money making minor... Religious Studies. 😂  Anyway, I don't travel to Europe often, but when I do it is usually Rome, Paris, London, etc. to see the sights of the spread of Western Civ and the history of it.  So this is the perspective I bring.  Golf nerd and history nerd, not a scenery nerd, I live in MT, I get plenty of scenery looking out my window so green fields with some spray painted sheep is old news for this nerdy hick.

 

Scotland has been invaded so many times, destroyed then recreated to be destroyed again, the history of the places was (IMO) underwhelming.  The cathedral as Aen shows is barely there, the fort is 1/2 closed so I am going to go out on a limb and say it feels historical but only in so much as it is old, there is no tangible or awe inspiring Parthenon, Louvre, London Tower.  The place has been decimated unless you head to Stirling or Edinburgh from a historical perspective.

 

Two days in St. Andrews is plenty if you ask me.  It's pretty small and for my bent it wasn't crazy cool.

 

I would guess Dundee will be more welcoming to visitors as well.  St Andrews is built around tourists, and all the polo shirts will give it away immediately.  Yeah, everyone is nice, but deep down you know its because you are their bread an butter.  I have never stayed in Dundee, but I suspect it won't (probably can't) be as geared toward tourists, which might be nice.  Dad and I stayed in St Andrews for 4 days but did no sightseeing, and we did the same in Glasgow, it was a golf trip.  When my wife and I went, we were in St Andrews three days and it felt like too long.  We then went to Callendar and had a bang up time partying with a traveling dominoes team (yes that is a thing), meeting people, and wandering around Stirling.

 

One thing to keep your eyes out for is those cows with the yak hair and horns.  I wouldn't call myself a bovine aficionado, but they did catch my eye enough to stop and check it out.

Both times i went with a touring company.  Just easier and wanted to make sure I didn't mess it up for the person I was with.  Here is what he said about the Old Course Hotel in general.  It's 5 star, which means it isn't Scotland, it's 5 star.  I want you to stay in Rusacks (with dad), then we stayed in Scores Best Western and looked out over the North Sea.

Hi all.  Been busier than a human is supposed to be. Caring for father in law.  A 16 year old who’s choosing colleges , headed to state championship in track , and getting his summer lined up ( packed schedule ) and trying to earn a living has about killed me.  But.   This hit my feed again on YouTube this morning  and I had a great big laugh.  and i always feel the need to share it. Rip coach.  This is one of my favorite inspirational press conferences of all time.  He’s speaking to his whole staff. And his players. Nuggets of pure gold in here. For any task.  And some of the funniest trash talk I can recall. My favorite football coach.

I always respected the hell out of him for being his own dude in an industry where a lot of his counterparts are from the same mold. Massive loss for the sport.

Agree.  I can listen between the lines and some of his quotes just blow me Away.  “ a bunch of people wanted to win the game.  But nobody wanted to play it “. Man. If that’s not all of life i dont  know what is. They want the shortcut.  But winning that way is hollow.  Toothless. Meaningless. Fleeting.

Thanks. I’ll give it a read in between my driver/body guard duties for the father in law , and trying to cram 8 hours work into this evening 🤣.  I just had brunch on the way back from his outpatient procedure, in a leisurely fashion , while a lady with 4 nose rings attached to her cheeks waited on us.  I was so worried my father in law would show out.  But she was polite and he was too.  Meanwhile I was on pins and needles .  Because he’s a loose unfiltered cannon .  I think he smiled and kissed her butt just to keep me off guard.   It’s a funny time to be alive.  The last horse and buggy gen is interacting with the people from mars 🤣.  I’m joking of course.

One of the few joys of getting older and showing it, is being able to get away with an attitude that may have got you in a fight in younger days.

But it seems to be more fun to actually be polite to people, it freaks them out. Especially the people from Mars, they expect to get and I think it is part of the whole look to get negative feelings from people.

After just spending a few days in the Bahamas with local people that still have manners and expect others to have them it was very nice. I come back from there and just automatically say good morning to a random person in Walgreens and the look I got was priceless.
