Arguably, the most recognizable person the world has ever known. Controversial, brash, transformational, and in his prime the best heavyweight boxer of all time. The three fights he had with Smokin' Joe Frazier were epic in their brilliance and brutality, culminating with the "Thrilla in Manila". The single greatest boxing match ever. "Rumble in the Jungle" was a masterstroke of ring genius. Allowing George Foreman, a fearsome puncher at the top of his game, to punch himself out then Ali finishing him with a KO in the 8th round. Watch the 5 punch flurry that finished him, magnificent.

 

Forever "float like a butterfly, sting like a bee". You were The Greatest of All Time. RIP Champ.

Being from Louisville, this is a sad, sad day. Yes he was controversial. But he was a man who stood by his convictions.

I'm 63 and have lived in Louisville my whole life and have always followed his career. I still remember the time me and my friends were in a late night greasy spoon and a big white limousine pulled up and Ali and his entourage came in to eat some greasy burgers too. Here we were eating burgers with the heavyweight champion of the world. He ended up buying our food and was just a good hearted down to earth guy. RIP Cassius.

I saw an interview with the guy who took this picture.

 

On funny thing is that the guy between all's legs was a rival photographer who obviously go no shot. The second is, you need to send the video that this photo was taken from. You'll barely even recognize this moment. Basically Al's arm is just traveling through as he moves away from Liston. It doesn't look like he's gloating or dancing or anything. Just moving away after a knockdown.

 

Anyone who hasn't seen it has to watch "When we were Kings". Doc about the Rumble in the Jungle. Just great scenes of Ali running through the streets and great interviews about the fight. Interesting characters.

My Dad grew up in the west end not far from Ali. Dad remembers Ali always running through Chickasaw park and Shawnee park while they were playing basketball. Ali would always come over and shoot some hoops and joke around with them even when he was already a well known fighter.

 

My Dad went to Flaget and Ali went to Central so athletic rivals but west end friends forever. My Dad was really sad the day Ali died.

My dad grew up in the south side of Louisville attending PRP. He and my grandfather were huge Ali fans and followed his career as well. I think my grandfather is making a trip from Hopkinsville where he lives now for the memorial services.
