In the video fly over, the ditch up the left of the 2nd - is that a red staked hazard?

Yup. There are several drainage ditches they put in to handle heavy rain runoff, although I understand they are dry 99% of the time. They are lateral water hazards but I suspect many will play out of them.

Unlikely. And in the event someone chooses to, it'll be more like TRY TO PLAY OUT OF THEM. Say a prayer and swing. Best case there is you don't injure yourself.

For reference, they are about 3ft deep and 5ft across where level with surrounding terrain and covered with mature fescue up to my knees.

anyone besides me watch the coverage when they described oakmont the club and swat play and wish they that many serious players at their club ? I for one did .... I like the intensity of playing serious golf , not bending rules and a running match that goes on for years.... ive had a couple short stints with such play , but it always seems to disband for one reason or another and i end up alone in the idea of playing the game down and putting out... thoughts?

I didn't watch the coverage but I absolutely love the idea. I play so much better playing some serious games with guys of the same skill set or better than me.

you should check it out...they went into detail about how the "swat" book had been kept by hand with scores, payouts and points since 1955 or so to present.. and how every putt during every round no matter the length was putted out ..no pickups whatsoever....

I'm currently trying to get a scratch type game set up at my club. Anyone is allowed to play, but they must play at scratch from the tips. Stroke play, for $10 a man. My challenge is getting all of my buddies at the course at the same time. Professionals would be allowed as well. 9 holes on Friday evenings

Bats/Sticks/Tools:

Ping G 10.5 set at 9.9, tour ad di 6x
Titleist 915F set at A4 (16.5), Rouge Black 80s
Titleist 910H set at A1 (19), Diamana Whiteboard 90s
Titleist 714 AP2 4-PW, KBS Tour 120s
Titleist SM6 52(bent to 51), 56, 60. M grinds on the 56 and 60 F on the 51

I enjoyed this as well. I especially like the "hole out all scoring putts, regardless of length" and "all bets are settled that day" rules. And the story about the guy who was thrown from a cart and concussed and one in his group asked if he could at least finish the hole was hilarious.

Those two have always been part of any and all games at my club and, in my opinion, is how it should be everywhere. There has been more than once that people have been told they are no longer welcome back after years of playing due to non payment. Not putting everything that still has an effect on the game out has confused me. I've watched guys miss a 10" putt when it mattered that in other games would have been given.

Went to the practice round yesterday. Like others said the elevation changes and slopes of the fairways were unexpected. I would describe the property as a punch bowl. The clubhouse sits on a hill you tee off 1 and go down the hill. 2 and 3 are played slightly up hill on the other rim of the bowl. After that holes 4-8 are played in the lower part of the bowl and 9 plays back up the bowl toward the clubhouse. The last few holes are played on the northern rim of the bowl and 18 plays back up the bowl to the clubhouse. It is the hardest golf course I have been on by far. Somebody in the field will shoot close to 90 this week.

Yes, when you say it, wasn't it for the previous time US open was played at Oakmont, that the members went out to the trees with their chainsaws?

Tree removal was gradual and started in the 90's

Some of it was gradual, but most of it was not.
