My first custom Byron -- order placed 6/30/2016

When I think of deep tuna, that's what I picture. From taking with Byron previously, tight tuna is the deepest and softest feeling milling he does by hand. His favorite as well.

Talked to byron himself - hes going to high polish the neck silver - and do silver paintfill instead of the gold. Hes going to take a good look at the sole and see if he cant figure something out. He said he wouldve reached out to me had he known it was a significantly important aspect of the putter that i NEEDED to have.

I just got off the phone after having a long, great conversation with Byron. Great guy and understands i wasnt being a pain in the arse and understood my concerns - and that he agrees that after talking to me about what i anticipated/wanted that the end result wasnt "it". We're working to get it to the gamer im looking for, and for that, i sincerely appreciate his help. I love the mill he put on my putter, so that will not be changing.

I can understand that confusion then, as in your OP you listed Deep Tuna Mill, which is a hand mill in that shape. I suspect he took the the picture as the shape you wanted, and read the order for deed Tuna mill and did it.

 

After having six Byrons, and scouring for more, I knew what "picture" was in my head when you wrote Deep Tuna Mill. Your putter had the exact picture I called up in my mind's eye. That stinks, that it didn't work out better.

 

The true tri-sole would have been a very serious issue for me too, as well as the two tone neck. I know that brushed blue will patina some, and the colors will change.

Hmm.. Interesting. That neck issue is strange, I think once he polishes it silver that it will fix that and look really cool. The tri-sole thing is something that is generally already on his pre-cnc'd heads and when he takes weight off the putter, it's generally from the sole first and then the face depending on the putter. For the face milling, I have putters with both, and the milling on this face looks 100x better (IMO) than the CNC'd version you asked for. I think your putter looks incredible, for what it's worth, and will look better once it's done.

 

Part of the issue with Byron as opposed to say buying a Scotty putter is that your putter is made for you and you don't know exactly what you're getting because it's a 1-off essentially hand done for you. Most Scotty tour putters are already done so you know exactly what you're buying, sometimes it's a good thing when too many variables are introduced. I know it's part of his program but sometimes less is more with customs. I'm so OCD about stamping that I would tell Byron specifically not to touch my putters if he was in a rush or had a lot of putters in the queue and to take his time. Hopefully he gets everything right and it turns out better than you expected, but when I go in ordering something like this I kind of accept the fact that there might be some wiggle room in what I actually get and don't get my expectations dead set on certain things that might drive me crazy.

Gio, I'm glad you took my advice and reached out to Byron. Im with Tai, pretty much agree on everything he stated. I love the face on your putter, a lot. Tai, when we sending the long pipe Damasc to WVa?

You will end up loving that milling...in a word, its sick. Looks tri-sole enough for me, but then again I am not big on overly angular tri-soles. Just don't like how they feel at address with the putter on the ground. The neck is the only issue and would prob. just go for a refinish or ask byron what finish would hide the line the best. I am assuming polish as he has already suggested that. Im not big on high shine finishes anyway, so prob. would have gone for matte black on this one. Stamping and overall look is really nice.

I totally understand if someone says they hate the neck. But I've got to say, I think it's hands down the coolest part of that putter. I've never seen that happen before quite like that and I feel it really gives your putter a truly unique feature you won't find on someone else's Byron.

You know kind of like Pure's "Tai Treatment" call it "Gio Neck." :D Seriously, people will be asking for it and listing it as a description in the classifieds.

I would take a brushed blue oil DH89 with the Tai Treatment and a Geo Neck any day of the week.

That's 100% your call, get what you like, if you're not happy with it send it back. Putters are too personal and magical to have any sort of bad mojo on them ;) I think it would look sick with a high buffed silver neck, also I had a torched GSS finish exactly like yours and it took Byron like 3 times of redoing it to get it how I liked it. I personally wanted your finish but darker and it was too shiny for me, so we ended up doing the same finish but in matte instead of brushed and it looked amazing. Bottom line, Byron can fix it you just have to guide him to what you'll be happy with in the end. Sometimes having so many options and flexibility turns into a cluster.. I've definitely been there with custom putters and then sold them because I was just sick of them and too many things bugged me. Nothing about your putter looks off to me at all, I do want to see better pictures of it though if you can get better lighting (outdoor in the shade).

I played Friday and had 29 putts with it, and Saturday and had 26 putts with it.

 

I'd say it's doing pretty well lol

 

the softness is far and away more than I thought was possible with a stainless putter --- it's unreal...I can liken it something such as a well worn, broken-in baseball glove.

 

it took some getting used to b/c it puts such a good roll on the ball that it almost felt hot off face, yet soft...

 

 

 

I PROMISE more pics are coming lol as soon as work lets me go, I'm off to the course for leagues and will take as many as you'd like, in sunlight, low light, hell in the dark if you want lol

I'm really liking the neck. It's a one-off for sure. I feel like the main draw of ordering from Byron is the opportunity he provides to get something completely different—something that doesn't look like a 1/1000000 OTR putter.

 

Sure, it's not spotless and definitely has a garage feel to it, but that's what I'm liking the most about it. When someone checks out your putter, there's no question that two metals were welded together to make a 1/1 neck—which I think is pretty cool. Congrats on the beautiful birdie maker.

have any of you had the blue mist on stainless and had rusting? or the finish go from blue to brown?

 

all the parts of the putter that were brilliant blue (a week ago) are now turning brown...

Soft dish detergent and soft rag. Humidity changes the finish, and none end up the same. It's actually a patina, not rust, as best I can tell.

Did you have the blue oil put on a satin (bead blasted) stainless putter? The blue oil looks different depending on the underlying state of the stainless steel. I had it on a satin GS DH89 and the colors never really popped. I also got little dark spots (looked like rust) that were a by-product of the heating process, per Byron.
