What ring has Phil found?

Phil's swing a straight out of the 70s…

It's long and fluid with a lot of leg movement and nothing static below his waist..

Which means Phils hips and knees don't have a lot of tension brought to bear…thus no joint issues..

Also, he is psoriatic arthritis which is a potentially debilitating disease…

He is undoubtedly on a huge regiment of pills so I won't get into the minutia of how these work because psoriatic arthritis is complex…

Just know it's amazing what Phils accomplishing with that diagnosis..

Again, watch his knee after impact...there is no pop up like a Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, or Tiger Woods...

Phil, at impact, his head is down and his fluid hips show a lot of tendencies toward a reverse C though he tends to stand up through the ball which again is going to be helpful on his lower back…

But before, during, and immediately after impact there is nothing but 1970s written all over it!!!

Excellent post. You can love or hate phil ... But there's no denying we are currently watching one of the last old style upright swings , and it works as well or better than a lot of the stack , tilt , swing left while holding the face off horseshit that's taught now. And it certainly will play longer. I mean look at Daly. He's abused his body more than any human on earth. But his swing still produces tons of power and he has great touch on wedge shots. Coincidence ? Not a Chance.

Phil's swing helps him generate distance, but it also has led to his career-long issues with accuracy and distance control. The biggest key to Phil's longevity is that he has perhaps the greatest pair of hands in the history of the game, which have allowed him to make a swing that is too steep into the ball work. He can save shots unlike almost anyone else.

And those hands have helped him develop an all-time great short game.

Regarding his psoriatic arthritis: we don't have access to his medical records and it without them it is just conjecture to determine the severity of his disease or the efficacy of his treatment.

Tom Watson contended in the Open right up until through the 72nd hole (not just through 36) at age 64 (not 46). And Tom's swing has never been either long or flowing.

Dude....no offense but that is as obtuse and incorrect an assessment one could make...

Watson was utterly long and fluid....and his hip turn was amazingly more than Phils…

My wife is an MD and psoriatic arthritis is a debilitating disease with a straightforward standard of care…

You are right that every patient is different but Phils psoriatic diagnosi was not an idiopathic one...

Phil had the positive genetic marker(HLA-B27) in his blood test…he would not have gotten the test were he not experiencing significant symptoms..

And genetic cases such as Phils are managed aggressively and the standard of care is remarkably consistent....

As I said, I don't want to get too technical but know that what he is achieving is monumental and to be revered…

I've always been crushed by Phil's close calls in US Open's but in reality it's made me like him that much more. He's always been so positive and a daring player. The Open Championship was another one that I thought he'd probably never win but this week I may get to watch him get his 2nd. I think his longevity comes from his unbelievable confidence and the greatest hands in the history of the game.

Phil is proof of mind over matter. Not a technically perfect swing. Not a perfect player in terms of strategy. He just plays golf. He often fails but he wins more than most. And when it "clicks" he is fantastic.

Phil is 46. Isn't he strangely well preserved?

You almost don't think about his age. He has in the elite year after year and still is, constanly in the top at tournaments. And coming as close to shoot 62 as anyone has in a major. Regardless of the outcome of The Open, he is still a contender, and noone talks about Old Phil being a factor.

Remember Jack? He was 46 when he won Masters, and that was the Old Bear coming out from hibernation. When Couples was at Phil's age, everyone was talking about his sore old back, when Vijay was like 43, it was soo fantastic that he won tournaments after 40. Not to mention Tiger...

And I cannot remember when Phil was out of the game for a longer period due to injury. What's the secret? Is his swing nicer to the body than the one of other elite players?

Well, to be fair Nicklaus was already the greatest of all time and by his own admission didn't care that much after 40.

I think the secret to Phil's wonderful longevity is his youthful state of mind. In many ways he's a grown-up kid.

Phil has maintained a youthful exuberance and love of competition, and he has always been goal-oriented. He has said many times that, among other things, he is striving for the career grand slam and 50 PGA TOUR victories, and he just won't quit until he reaches those milestones.

Not really. Watson was 59 years old when he lost in the playoff with Stewart Cink in 2009. At age 64 in 2014 he finished T51 in the Open Championship. Not in contention then on the 72nd hole @ age 64.

Doesn't seem like he grinds that hard over the course of the PGAT season, just for certain events. That's also probably why a player this great has never reached #1.

Greg Norman, David Duval, Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods are the reasons he didn't reach number one during his prime years. Pretty valid reasons if you ask me.

59 or 64 doesn't matter, either age to be leading an Open after 71 holes is mind boggling. When you consider WatsWatson'well documented putting woes it is even more incredible. I still can't believe that approach into 18 didn't sit on the green, he did everything right and played it perfectly but it just didn't grab.

I honestly believe we will never see the likes of that week again, it was a once only event.
