18 Holes with Monte Today

Hstead

Recommended Posts

Well, since Monte was in Columbus for his clinic, and unfortunately I couldn't make my schedule work to attend, I was able to see him today and play 18 with he and pinhigh at Heritage CC since I happened to be in Columbus with my daughter during college orientation.

I really don't want to embarrass Monte like this on the forum, but for the record, I made more pars during the round than he did. He could only muster 7 pars. Granted, the wind was blowing a little, enough that it made a difference, and we played the tips and the course isn't a cup cake, but he could only manage 7 pars today. I am not sure exactly how many I had but it was more than 7.

Of course he did make 8 birdies to my 3.

So he kicked in a smooth 67 and three of the birdies were 2 putts pretty much on par 5s.

He has a good handle on what I want my swing to look like and helped me with a couple of drills, and showed me a cool short game shot when the ball is deep in the rough and the grain against you. He and I have a similar issue of getting a little steep with the driver and pulling the handle so he can relate. Unfortunately, that is where the similarities end.

Monte hits the ball like a Tour player. I have played with some good players, but he can move his golf ball. It is always nice to watch that caliber ball striking up close.

Just thought I would share. Monte can chime in and share his story about meeting some of Ohio's finest, including the K9 unit.

You left out the two best parts.

1. Birdie number 8 I hit one of my patented 30 yard blocks into what I assumed was off the property. Turned out it was in another fairway with a significantly better angle to the par 5 with the water out of play. IMO, the better way to play the hole.

2. I was diving from Detroit where I played Oakland hills with a friend and I got pulled over by a state trooper and a Sherrif. I initially got pulled over for going 10 mph over the speed limit by the state trooper. When he saw VA plates, a CA liscense and a one way rental from Detroit to Columbus, he called the Sheriirf in and they pinned me in on both sides, and searched the car with a drug sniffing dog.

They asked me why I was in Detroit and I told them visiting a friend. When they asked why I was in Columbus I said, "15 guys are paying me to come into town and make fun of their golf games."

The response, "If you have any drugs in there for personal use, it's better if you tell us now."

I made a joke to show them I wasn't worried. I said I had pretzel crisps and strawberries. They both laughed. Jokes aside, they were very professional, I didn't feel threatened and they explained how there is a big drug trafficking trail on the highway I was on from Detroit to Columbus and my situation set off more than one red flag.

They didn't even give me a speeding ticket, they just gave me a warning for not being hostile and cooperating.

There is a huge drug trafficking problem on that highway. It's terrible in SE Ohio they catch and release all day long looking for drug runners.

I do biometrics for the bureau of criminal investigation in Ohio and it's crazy how some of the stations look more like palaces along that highway. It sounds like they get to keep the money they confiscate from dealers so there's a high level of motivation to catch them.

Two things:

1. You figure that since Monte is a former Long Drive Champion that he'll hit it far. You don't anticipate the trajectory that's into the stratosphere and just keeps going. Most likely, However long the longest hitter you've played with is, Monte will smoke em. He's got an extra gear that's unbelievable.

2. Since he hits it so long you figure that his touch is mediocre and that his putting sucks. Nope. He drains em from everywhere and gets up an down from a garbage can. The array of shots he has is unmatched. I still say the coolest shots he hits are flighted short irons in close and that dang 2i he hits from like 250 into the wind lol.

I appreciate all the praise. I now need to spend the next 4 months figuring out that golf is 18 holes not 14 holes.

I looked like a tour player for 14 holes and like a 20 handicap for 4 of them.

In 3 tournament rounds this year, the farmers pre Q and the 2 rounds of the so cal open.

Farmers- 7 under for 14 holes....5 over for 4

Round 1 SCO- 14 holes 2 under....5 over for 4

Round 2 SCO- 14 holes 4 under....8 over for 4

It's easy to say the loss of focus and sloppy play on a very few holes can be fixed by playing more golf and more tournament golf...but that is the only way to fix it...not just for me, but for everyone,

Cops in Michigan are normally pretty good about the warning thing for speeding. Was going 10 over in 25 up at school on the way home from dropping some friends off late at night, and rolled a blinking red. They pulled me over. I did my ABCs and they let me on my way.

I have some friends who have had there entire car ripped to pieces because the slightly swerved on the express way because their car is 30 years old

LOL, back when I was just married and lived in eastern Iowa, was returning from a day of work in Madison, just stopped in Dickeyville for things to take home for dinner. Got a warning when I told him I was trying to get home before the frozen sauerkraut thawed. Best excuse he had gotten for awhile.

Monte is lucky one of those guys didn't ask him about holding the lag or generating clubhead speed by using his lower body - the dog would have been hiding under the car from the hostility.

Can't imagine Monte being thought of as a "mule"....... hmmm.

Great post and story.

He hits the ball like nobody's business.

Can't hardly see the ball in them, but still have phone video of Monte hitting 2 irons in KC last summer. Jaw dropping demonstration. Really.

Thank goodness I don't have one, I'd have quit golf by now trying to hit it trying to copy him.

Highlight video I still watch: Jake is filming me work on what Monte wants me to do, you hear Monte guide me into setup, make the swing he wants, almost shank it and you hear Monte say, "now we have a golf swing." What? And, of course, it looks so much better in terms of what I'm working on.

Hope the Ohio clinic was a great time - you guys' fault if it wasn't.

I was at that clinic in K.C. On the day we played Hodge Park Monte was with our group when we came to a short par four. 285 yds. Very slightly down hill. a small pond to carry at about 250 yds. We had maybe a 5 mph tail wind. Monte carried pin high onto the green with his 2 iron. The funny thing was it didn't even look like he made more than just an average pass at the ball. No straining. Just a smooth, coordinated swing. The year before that we also had Monte for a clinic in K.C. At the end of the second day Monte was showing us some of his ability to hit high, low, draw, fade shots on command. When he finally took out the driver he was hitting drives that rolled onto the front of the driving range(we were at the back) 325 yds away and into about a 15 mph breeze. This was with his standard driver, not his long drive driver. Just amazing.

Try the odyssey toe up.

I found the toe up putter to be very hot. Hard to use on fast greens. From that stand point the edel is much better.

The directed force just looks so crazy it's hard to get past. And I've used a lot of weird shaped putters over the years.

I didn't find the directed force putter to help me personally. But I wasn't fit I just used monte's for a bit. If I made more putts, I would bag it for sure.

Chances are you were coming down US 23, right through Marion, where I am. Lots of drug trouble in these parts and it all seems to come from Detroit and Chicago. In the future, you don't want to go more than 5 over the speed limit in Ohio. I hope you enjoyed Ohio, otherwise!

87 is kinda bad with cops but we're spoiled with the Thruway. I think I saw a total of 2 cops on the Thruway and Mass Turnpike going to and back from the Boston clinic.
