Need a 3 wood fairway/hybrid alternative !

Can't hit the 3 wood or hybrid consistently but absolutely nail my 5 iron which is my longest iron I carry.

 

Problem is, my 5 iron only gets me about 170m and my 3 wood is 200ish when struck well but the gap between my driver (which is solid,no issues) 230/240m average means a differential of about 50/60m.

 

It's costing me shots so looking for an alternative to the 3 wood in maybe an iron ?

 

Anything out there that could fit the bill ?

 

I play Callaway XR iron and M2 driver.

FW and rescue are G30, they have never been the best for me.

I'd suggest the m2 3 or 5 wood. Could also try the udi or tmb 2 iron. I went through that experiment and ended back with m1 3 wood and 5 wood and 3 hybrid.

Will check those irons out, just feel more confident with an iron, maybe the curved face is in my head a bit.

If you play the XR irons, you might find the TMB and UDI a bit small and not as forgiving. Not that they are not forgiving but is there really something that comes close to the XR irons!

Why not order the XR 4 iron? There's even a 3 iron... Maybe it's available for lefties.

Other driving irons that I'm thinking of and that have bigger footprints... Ping Crossover, Adams DHY, Tour edge CB proH or pro tungsten, Mizuno H5 or H4 and Cleveland 588 MT. Cheap (and good!) experiments would be the DHY and the TEE cb proH.

Your 5 iron being 23*, you might want something around 21* to start with. If it ens up working for you, the 18* is quite good, especially for the tight and long par 4's.

No offense but the fli-hi's are older technologies and the COR rating is not as high as the XR's. Chances are he would hit his 23* XR 5 iron higher and further than a 21* mp fli-hi...

My advice to the OP, If you're going the driving iron route, you need to take in consideration the XR strong lofts and hot faces before choosing something to fill up that gap.

Gamed mp57's no problem and 712cb for a while and have no problem hitting centre of club.

The 3 wood is usually chunked.which craps me to tears :(

 

Hit once the other day, 195 out, drove 10 through green, flushed it but so inconsistent.

Being lefty also has availability issues, typical.

Yeah they do suit my eye, 3 wood looks too much like a driver :D

Maybe try a 5 wood at around 19/20 degrees of loft , i used to struggle with a 3 wood but can seem to hit my 5 wood with no issues and its down to having slightly more loft i think.

 

If you like the driving iron then maybe try the udi/apex or one of the new mizuno. Maybe visit a local golf store and go and try a few out for a few hours and see which you hit best.

 

As some one mentioned above the mizuno fli hi are very solid for an older club and could be picked up pretty cheap on ebay.

Let us know what you find. I've been interested in driving iron type clubs too, difficult to find around here to try anything in lefty. I don't think mizuno or srixon are available in lefty. I hit the ping crossover a few times which seemed promising. I've got a couple ping g20 hybrids I'm hitting ok, just got a new 2h for cheap I haven't had a chance to get out on the range yet. The g20 hybrids are pretty ugly but are "iron like." Also agree w one of the posts on considering your set's 3 or 4 iron. Good luck

Definitely check out a driving iron/utility iron. I have a lot of confidence in my Mizuno MP-H4 3 iron/utility off the tee.

I struggled mightily with fw's until I went with a 4w then a 5w after that. You really have to either try them out on the course or just use trial and error on the BST or eBay. The TEE Trilogy/XRail can be had cheap and is ridiculously easy to hit. A little more $$ but the 915f is easy to hit and long.

Went to local shop where I buy my gear.

 

Tried apex 3 hybrid, flatter face,stocky head I liked, felt light and whippy,went ok.

Tried 4 iron of my xr set, went ok,about 180m, about what I expected but couldn't get much more out of it.

Tried M1 3 hybrid, 195-210 easily, exactly the area I wanted.

Could get 180 choked down and 220 off a tee so bought that.

 

Hope it's the answer as all drew nice and were flushed out the screws off the mat.

 

We'll see tomorrow, quite a flexible club on today's trials.

Short review of the M1 hybrid.

 

Feels solid, very straight.

Nice heavy head.

Low piercing low spin trajectory.

Can be choked down for 180m or teed up for 220m if ripped !

 

Love it.
