Sun Mountain 2017 bags lineup

Recommended Posts

I just got my 4.5 LS 4-way in this past Saturday. The thing is awesome. Coming from a long time hoofer user and last year went to a 2016 Four5, this is my dream bag. I haven't gotten to the course as we got a ton of snow but initial thoughts are awesome.

There is Zero tangle. This is why I went away from the hoofer to begin with. I went Four5 as I thought the 14 way would eliminate the tangle, but I try new clubs all the time, have shootouts with shafts, drivers, putters and 14 way was a paid for taking 17-18 clubs to the range. I threw 17 clubs in the new 4.5 LS and it's amazing. All clubs slide in and out.

I like that pocket configuration and having the 3 accessory pockets up front (one extra for the range finder) is something I liked about my hoofer better than the 2016 Four5.

Cart strap pass through system. I hated Four5 setup as the strap went over one of the pockets where I kept my phone and I would basically have to undo the cart strap to access it. Not huge but it was a pain. I haven't had it to the course yet and on a cart but should do exactly what it's advertised to do.

When locking the legs in, the bag stands perfectly on its own. My 2016 Four5 did not. It would just lean. Considering we are in winter season now, I love this added support to make storage easier.

Being that I haven't taken it to the course, I can't give walking or riding feedback yet but it is lighter than my Four5 14 and seems about the same as my hoofer. I love these straps for walking as well as I did on my 2016. They are bulky but super comfortable. I have not been able to get my 2015 Hoofer straps to allow the bag to rest comfortably for me. I am 6'5 250 long arms and it just seems to want to sit too high on my back, even when loosening the straps as far as it will go. Maybe this is just me but I am used to the 90's hoofers that were great for me.

So far the 4.5 LS is a winner for me. Will post some pics up tomorrow.

I originally ordered the 3.5 but then changed gears and went with the 5.5. Even though I cancelled my original 3.5 order, the retailer must have never cancelled it with Sun Mountain because a few days ago, I received a 3.5 on my doorstep shipped directly from SM. Yes, I did the right thing and notified the retailer to get it shipped back. I did however get a chance to compare the two side by side. The 3.5 is just too small and really is geared for those who walk the majority of their rounds. The 5.5 is perfect for my needs - someone who mostly rides but does enjoy to walk every now and then. It's still lightweight, just not as light as the 3.5. I posted a review on this thread of the 5.5 and am so glad that I went that route.

For what it's worth, the reason I liked the 3.5 at first is because I really liked one of the color options - gunmetal, black, and yellow.

Kind of annoying color ways vary between bag models. Was looking at the 4.5ls but I've wanted to get my hands on a leather one for a while and will do so shortly.

How do the leather ones hold up in rain? Do you have to treat them at all?

Goes to show that it really helps to try a golf bag in hand. I ride majority of my rounds (would prefer to walk, but usually use golfnow with cart included) and deciding between 3.5 LS and Nike Sport Lite. One reason being that the 3.5 LS is a touch bigger than I'd like, Sport Lite has a slimmer overall profile. If I carried 14 clubs, 3.5 LS would be perfect in my opinion. I just don't carry much more than clubs, a few balls, tees, laser, water bottle. Don't need all the room. Still leaning 3.5 LS, Sport Lite is listed in BST.

I'm not sure. If I was in rain a lot I would use a different bag.... that's just me though. I've been in rain with a 3.5 and survived fine. Bought an h2no a while ago and it didn't rain at all that year on me so I decided to sell it as I hated single zippers.

Just played my first rounds with the 3.5 ls. I spent last year with the 2.5 and basically wore the bag out. I walk 99% of the time, play 3-4 rounds every weekend and get 9 in most weekdays after work (spring/summer). So, I get a lot of use out of the bag. The 2.5 was great in that it was light and had a small profile. I missed having more pockets to keep everything separate. The 3.5 ls seems likes it's going to do the trick. I like th GPS pocket for my scorecard holder and phone. The bag is a little bulkier than the 2.5 but it's great having places to keep stuff.

Does the one pound difference between different bags really make a meaningful difference? When you are over twenty pounds loaded I would think that the strap design and other features would make a bigger difference.

I thought the exact same thing and made similar comments on this forum. Then I tried a 2 Five and now the 3.5 LS. It makes a huge difference. Doesn't seem logical as you mentioned, but it just does.

I will let you decide whether the following equates to heavier golf bags. (BTW, this research study is also referenced on WebMD).

One Pound Weight Loss Equals Reduced Pressure on Knees

by JOSHUA BAILEY Last Updated: Jun 17, 2015

Knee pain is a frequent issue that continues to increase as people age. One factor that compounds this issue is weight. The knees support the body when standing upright, and any weight that you carry that is non-essential, like being overweight, increases the load your knees have to support. This can lead to long-term knee pain and cartilaginous breakdown, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fortunately, small changes in weight can have significant effects on knee pressure, according to a study conducted by Dr. Stephen Messier, appearing in the July 2005 “Journal of Arthritis & Rheumatism.”

By the Numbers

Messier’s study concluded that for every 1 lb. of weight loss that occurred, there was a resulting 4-lb. reduction in knee joint load or knee pressure. Furthermore, it was suggested that individuals who lost 10 lbs. would be subject to a total of 48,000 less pounds of pressure for every mile walked. Multiply this change in workload over an average lifespan and you get a compelling case for weight loss as an approach to alleviate knee pain in individuals who are overweight or obese.

So does the 3.5ls really that much heavier than the 2.5 ?? does that 1lbs feel more than 1lbs?

Yes, it's noticeably heavier then 2 Five. But it's still noticeably lighter than any other full(er) size bag. The 2 Five vs 3.5 LS comes down to # of pockets. 2 Five just doesn't have enough pockets for me. But each year on Summer Solstice we walk 54 holes, would love to have a 2 Five for that day. If I can find one for like $100 I might get one just for that day. Hard to justify at $200+.

Sorry took me a few days but here is the new 4.5 LS 4-way. It is really fantastic. With all the snow/freezing rain/sub 30 temps we have been getting, it finally warmed up yesterday and got a chance to get out with it. Very happy so far. Coming from long time hoofer user and last year had a Four5 14-way, I am beyond happy with this purchase and the decision to go back to non 14 way. I had a few extra clubs in the bag yesterday just trying to figure out how I want my setup for 2017 and really there is zero tangle whatsoever. Just perfect set up for me.

I'm strongly considering a 5.5LS for primarily push cart, with occasional carry usage. I have mid sized grips and hate tangle. Hoping the 11" top will help. I could also get a 4.5LS.

4.5LS has zero tangle issues, even had 18 clubs in the bag and they go straight in and out, all the way to the bottom. I'm beyond thrilled with performance.

I LOVE my 5.5! Extra large opening is very nice with no tangle.

Thanks for the review! I play almost every weekend and walk about 95% of the time. The 3.5 looks perfect for me. I like the extra pocket for the range finder and the light weight. I'm going with the Navy, white and red with the USA flag like you have. Great color combo.

Im about a month in with my 5.5 and absolutely love it!!

* Tons of space for clubs and they never get tangled

* Tons of pocket space...just to give an idea...I have one of the smaller Bushnell rangefinders and can fit it and one of the little magnetic things that clips to your cart and holds the rangefinder fits in the rangefinder compartment...I keep rain pants and rain jacket in the apparel pocket and can also fit another sweater in there

* Ball pocket is huge, can hold a ton of golf balls

I was a little sketchy about the clear pocket, still not a big fan of the design of it. I would have preferred a solid black, lined pocket there instead but its ok. I keep a couple sharpies in there along with one of those things that draws a line on the golf ball and a tool and lead tape with plenty of space.

I ride 99.9% of the time and if I do walk its with a push cart. I dont really recommend this bag for carrying if youre walking. Its pretty large and has a little bit of weight with all my stuff but if you can keep it light enough that you can carry more power to you.

Now if I can just get back9usa to get the cobalt/white fairway and driver covers back in stock to match this bag. Those would go great with the color I have.

Has anybody tried the 3.5LS or 4.5LS on a Clicgear 3.5+ push cart? Was trying to decide on one of these but was wondering how well they worked with a Clicgear.

I've got a 3.5LS scheduled for delivery today. I can't try it on the course, because $&*@ snow. But I'll give you a living room review pairing it with a Clicgear 3.0.
