I Need New Wedges...

After having a set of Cleveland 900 wedges since high school (3 years) and a brief stint with Hogan wegdes, I am looking for a new set. I'm thinking something like 54* and 60* so I can keep the hybrid and 3 iron in the bag.

About me: 20 years old, plus 1 handicap. I like smaller heads, and it seems like spin is on the minds of manufactures, so some more spin would be nice. My drives aren't always the straightest, so getting through my home course's thick rough is also a priority.

I don't have any real preconceived notions on what or what not to get. I play mp 32s so I thought maybe the MPR wedges would make sense, but I haven't seen, let alone hit them.

I got the X Tour wedges, 54 and 60 m.d. in vintage finish. I appreciate all the responses. I didn't like the look of the mizuno MPR and the scratch wedges were tooooo expensive. I'll do a WITB soon. thanks again.

You might want to try out the Titliest Vokey spin milled wedges. They spin nicely (just as their name would imply). Luckily for you, if you decide to go the 54,60 route, both are available in the spin milled whereas the 52 is a regular vokey wedge. I also like the Taylormade Rac TP wedges as well and they get pretty good spin too. just my .02.

I am really happy with my cleveland wedges. i play driver-3w,5w, mizuno mp60's 3i-pw and a 52* cleveland cg10, and 56* cg10. I took out my 60* and am happy without it. you learn to adapt without it, and my course has realy fast greens.

 

Over all i would get the cleveland zip groove wedge in a 56 or 60 and then get a cg 10 52*

love my mp-r wedges.............they do not chew balls like the sm volkey's or the callaway's feel awesome spin well................you will see a big difference in these to your's..............at +1 you probably don't need to spin in that much(sm volkey) so I say try them I went with the Black NI version...............had berilium copper before didn't like glare on chromed version....pm if any q?

I personally have tried them all and stuck with mizuno Mp-r's (great grind) and the X-tours. The X-tours are actually a tad better, exept they have a bit to much offset for me. I have a spin milled and it was good, but for some reason I don't get the feel or sound or whatever I like with the forged wedges. Just a personal preference

OK.... wedges are such a personal thing...

You need to decide if you want forged wedges or not.... Big difference in feel between the 2....

If you want cast (harder feel) than i definately recommend the Vokey's and the Cleveland 588 DSG's...

I also used to play the 900 series cleveland gunmetal wedges.... great clubs... But after hitting like 15 different models, i realized i want the same feel in my wedges as i do in my irons...... SOFT!!!!

I think you should try the Callaway Xforged wedges... they are soft and spin like crazy

But the best wedge i have ever hit is in my bag......... the new Miura forged 588's.... While they are expensive, the feel and workability is unmatche by anything i have had or hit at all fo that matter.....

There are many other good wedges - Scratch will build you custom wedges fit to your game.....

And since you like traditional head types, stay away from cleveland cg 10's and 11's

I would go with Vokeys, great look, great spin, plenty of loft, finish and bounce options.

 

If you want to add two wedges I would go with either a 54 and 60 or a 52 and 58 combo. YOu could also bend your 54 to 53 if it helps fill the gap between you pw better. I would also add that the shape of the wedge you prefer can make a difference, the Vokeys have more of a teardrop shape, which I like, and the clevelands have more of a rounded shape. Mizuno offers one of each style, neither is right or wrong, just personal preference.

Yep..... If you like a hard feeling wedge the Vokey gets my vote.....

But if you want real touch on those tough shots you gotta go forged..........

I think wedge play is all about feel, if a forged wedge is what helps you get the best feel go with it. If you want more spin go with the vokeys.

I like the Sapin milleds, TP Blacks, but they lacked feel, I am gonna try the Sonartec T-35, which I have heard GREAT things about, and they are forged.

I got the x tours in 54 and 60. Vintage finish, MD grooves on the 60. I am literally tearing covers off balls, couldn't be happier. And to all that commented on the nice feel of forged wedges, you're right. The feel is noticeably different, in a good way, to my old 900s. Thanks everyone.

Well, definitely check out the following:

 

PING Tour Black Nickels. Great wedge and can be custom ground by Ping WRX. I currently play the 54 & 58 and they perform very well.

 

As everyone else has also stated, the Vokey Spin Milled's are also excellent. Spin a ton.

 

Also coming out, definitely give the upcoming Sonartect t46 wedge a try. They're forged, and a higher bounce version of the t35, which is a great wedge. SWEET forged feel and spin the ball like a top. Plus, the heel relief is very nice to give more playability. The t46 have a black nickel finish.

 

Those are the 3 that I'd gladly recommend...

My vote would be for Titleist! I played with 588s before in the past and after switching to Vokeys have had great success...especially with the spin milled...I love my 56* spin milled...these just have the right touch and feel!

I just got some Mizuno Mp-T's tour issued wedges from Joe Kwok and they are awesome. Great look, great feel. And for the price of the retail versions....pretty solid choice.

 

BTW I got the raw haze....I like the raw look.

FWIW, I just bought the MPR 52* wedge in Black Ni. I've only been playing it for about 10 days or so now, but I absolutely love this wedge. the sole grind is awesome! I feel like I could hit just about any shot with it. After playing this, I definately don't think I need 3 wedges in my bag. nice amount of spin and control.

Tried the following, they are all very good IMO. I think I am the only player on earth that doesn't kneel in reverence when I hear the word Vokey. I tried them & they felt fine, they were just about 4th or 5th on my list. Maybe don't have the game for them at 11.4 index?

Was that is WAS a vokey guy for years...... Have had the Mizuno MP "R" series wedges for 4 months now and they are the best ever. Try them in Black Ni and be ready for amazement.

Definitely go with Scratch Wedges. With all the efforts a lot of golfers go through to customize their clubs for their game, why not wedges too? Don't play off the rack, check out Scratch Golf.
