Sure! When I started playing in the mid 1970s beginner blades were everywhere.

I'm sure you can still find some. If not you can always buy new ones.

Depends... Does the "beginner" in question possess far better than average ball-striking consistency where his/her mis-hits generates sweetspot wear measuring the approximate surface area of a nickel (or larger) instead of the ideal "player's" dime-sized, or smaller, surface area wear spots?

The Macgregor 1025m vfoils are about as forgiving as anything I have played. And you can find them on ebay reasonably priced. Sweet clubs, great to learn with.

The old Maxfli Australian Blade was the most forgiving blade I ever played back in the day.

NO, but there is no law against starting to play the game with any clubs you like.

Yes, plenty of sets of quality under $200. A cheap enough investment for a beginner to give a whirl and see if it is for them.

 

Not sure exactly how beginner you are, but there is one caveat with blades. Your contact is going to need to be ball first and front of the ball, which will also mean a nice flat left wrist and hands ahead of the ball at impact. If you are a true beginner and do not do this, that is fine, just know that you will be using your new set to learn how to strike the ball, which if you have the desire to practice is certainly not a bad thing.

 

The newest mizunos you feel like spending the money on is a best bet. Newer blades are easier to hit due to sole grinds and weight distribution.

I posted the other day about getting a really good second hand set of MP32 (my proper set are Callaway XR)

 

I have had two sessions at the range with them. Findings...

 

5-PW hit them ok (off mat) - loads shorter than my XRs. Middled a few and felt that "buttery" feeling. Missed a few and they hurt my hands and went nowhere. Was hitting 7 about 140 and 5 about 150 - 6 was odd in that it varied. Didn't take the 3&4

 

Thoughts - I will probably take them to the range now and again, and will have a quick five hole loop at my home course when alone. I suspect if i played them now I would drop a lot of shots.

 

Findings (based on 200 balls...) - GI clubs do work, GI clubs are more forgiving, XR are longer club to club than MP32 (lofts etc) forged blades are harder to hit, when hit well they feel like no GI club can, when hit badly they punish and hurt fingers....what everyone says, really.....

I have MP5s, more forgiving than they look! Mp33s would be another good choice.

Beginners blade, why would you even want them for the look? There are alot of choices with slight cavity that perform just as well as a blade. Mizuno, Titleist, Srixon etc all have both options. There are no blades with training wheels.

In my case if was the look and the price that led me to the mp4's. Yeah there is a small sweet spot, but I just plain don't like the feel of the other clubs. In my junior opinion, there shouldn't be the same feel hook to pure to slice. I don't believe that accomplishes a whole lot. Feels like smashing an egg all the time and I become disinterested quickly. Get that hand shock once or twice and I am paying attention to detail. As long as the ball is going straight, don't worry be happy.

i started with ping s59's which are very forgiving for a blade, upgraded to miuras and while they are awesome when struck well they are harsh when mis-hit, will most likely go back to ping this winter

As in beginner to golf, or experienced golfer who is new to blades?

 

If you're stuck on blades, the Mizuno MP5's, Nike Vapor Pro's, Srixon Z945's, Ping iBlade's, and Titleist 716MB's are all great clubs.

 

If you just like blade performance, a thin top line, and still some forgiveness, I'd look at Mizuno MP-25's, Callaway Apex Pro's, Ping S55's, Titleist 716CB or T-MB, or Taylormade PSi Tour's.

Must admit I'm a bit out of date, but I currently use a set of Titleist 735.CM irons from around 2006. They start in cavity backs at the 3/4/5 irons progressing to pure blades in the 8/9/PW. I've found them to be absolutely excellent hence them lasting ten years (although I am about to upgrade). If you wanted to get started in blades might be worth having a look to see if anyone still offers these combo sets.

Exactly. I'm of the opinion that every golfer interested in blades should find a cheap set of one of the classics. IMO, the Mizuno MP-14s are the perfect "beginner" set of blades because they can be found for cheap (usually around $100) and are still a blast to play.

What about Maltby MMB-17? I've never hit them but I've heard that they are pretty easy to hit for a blade.
